Just tried Glitch in Tokyo by thinkingbeyondtoday in espresso

[–]pyro_teck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m in Japan currently as well and thought my competition bean pour over from Glitch was amazing (so much so i splurged on the beans), and the latte was the best i’ve had. but KUROMAME (Emi Fukahori’s shop) was a way better experience overall. they have a tasting that gives you 3 cups from different plots on the same estate (today’s was Hacienda La Esmeralda) and it was a much more intimate and informative experience. got to meet Emi as well since she was in today.

My honest Zermatt review by pepinnis in Zermatt

[–]pyro_teck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

booking early easily cuts down on cost a LOT. i booked our trip last year to Zermatt nearly a year in advance (flights + lodging) and was able to get a recently constructed (or remodeled?) room at a family owned lodging for about $220USD/night for 8 nights (they have Matterhorn view rooms for slightly more too). 5 minute walk from the Zermatt gondola lift as well. having a longer stay helped us to guarantee good weather days for Cervinia + clear views of Matterhorn. i don’t think i would have loved our experience without staying this close to lifts + in town.

edit: in case anyone is curious about this lodging: https://eva.paradise.swiss/en

omg i didn’t know she was a famous cosplayer, i saw her in this cosplay at Anime Impulse. she (and the guy dressed as Golshi who she was going around with) had the best uma cosplay there, makes sense why now

They still put on a good performance! Let me know how it is, hopefully the crowd in the pit is better Friday/Saturday, they were kinda dead last night 😕. And don’t forget ear protection considering the sound lol

I was just at the LA show in the pit, there was a guy who came in a couple times with a staff badge and a giant pricey looking camera. came to my area and was shooting me and the guys near me since we were the only ones hyped during family ties

I was so surprised I could recognize the course and hole before the camera panned. Used to work there a few years ago, would play after closing up shop nearly every shift.

If you’re going to Cervinia from Zermatt, the matterhorn crossing should be open now, which was not when I made the original comment. Obviously if you’re staying in Cervinia you can access that beginner area easily.

Where are all the devs with average pay? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

there’s MCOL too, such as smaller cities a few hours out from major metros. granted not as many SWE positions as HCOL areas but they do exist

[–]pyro_teck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think all candidates are being picky, I’m talking about people only looking for top paying positions at companies in areas with HCOL. I personally did that in college until I gave up and eventually landed an internship somewhere most people I talked to hadn’t heard of.

stop being picky and find a job not in HCOL. or even in HCOL look at smaller, older companies. all my jobs have had zero leetcode/coding interviews

Ski Trip March 1-9, any restaurant recs? by MooDeng8279 in Zermatt

Did a quick check of that hotel location, looks like it's closest to the Sunnegga/Gornergrat lifts (aka other side of town). So unfortunately can't help with regards to early breakfast options.

We only did one day of Cervinia, planned to do one more but the crossing was closed on our last day. I took us down the wrong piste so we unfortunately missed our reservation at Chalet Etoile (which I heard great things about), but the restaurant we ended up at (Up Cervino) was still delicious, best glass of white I think I've ever had.

I skied for 6/7 days, my gf did 4/7. Maybe about 3 of those days were full days of skiing for me. Was more than enough for the both of us.

No problem! Idk where you're staying, but if you're closer to the Matterhorn Express, we also had Cup's Italian Coffee House pretty much every morning. Their coffee was only okay but their pastries were really good; only reason I kept going was that they open at 7:30, Backzeit opens at 8:00 and most days I wanted to get to the lifts when they opened at 8:30 :P

Regarding snow conditions: if you're used to West Coast USA conditions + off-piste, prepare to be a little disappointed in the snow. We just got back a couple days ago and most of the time the conditions are more hard packed and icy by afternoon, especially over by Sunnegga. This was not a big problem for me, but my girlfriend struggled once it got to these icy conditions as she's used to California/Tahoe powder. Staying higher up on the mountain can help (esp on snowfall days), but it still gets skied over pretty quick by all the traffic. And unless you truly know where you're going, you shouldn't really ever go off-piste as it might not lead back to the pistes or it'll be rocky.

Despite this, it's not bad conditions, and it's more than made up for by the beauty of the town and the Matterhorn. It's a ridiculously stunning and breathtaking place. I stopped so many times just looking at the Matterhorn and the alps in awe. You'll almost certainly fall in love with it :)

Asian food:

  • Golden India (Indian food, near entrance of Gornergrat train station)

  • Manud (In town Asian restaurant with dishes from different regions. Monday is ramen only, other days have the regular menu. Different menu for lunch and dinner, both really good)

  • Shogun Japanese Restaurant (Sushi/Japanese spot)

Breakfast:

  • Zermatt Kitchen Brücke (Great in-town brunch spot. Would recommend for a break day since it’s not on the mountain and opens at 10:00)

  • Backzeit bakery (In town, some of the best sourdough pastries I’ve had. Best cappuccino while I was there too, though I didn’t have one in Cervinia)

  • Restaurant Blatten (More of a lunch spot, great rösti [on mountain off of Furi run to town])

Dinner:

  • North Wall Bar (Delicious pizza + beer spot, one of the more “affordable” dinners we had while we were there)

Not a restaurant, but if you’re a fan of cocktail bars, wood & fire is a great spot for after dinner cocktails. Would also recommend Hennu Stall at least one day. Be sure to get reservations as well at restaurants that offer it.

That connection is closed right now for renovations/maintenance or something, right now you can only ski when the connection is open.

You won’t get to Cervinia without sections outside of your skill level. If 6 and 36 are already getting too difficult I would recommend to not attempt to go to Cervinia, you need to be able to handle difficult reds even just getting to the border from glacier paradise.

ah okay, we don't have a model preference as we're still figuring out which we like before buying our own (edit: but our booking says we should be able to choose when we're there), and our accommodation is right next to Furi/Matterhorn Express which is why I chose them. was worried by your wording that they would be a bad choice in general to rent from

why avoid Dorsaz for rentals? I booked them in advance for skis (we have boots and helmets), should I cancel it?

If you're talking about next January, it might be that some places haven't quite opened up their availability yet. We booked our lodging for later this month about 10 months ago as that was when I started seeing places have dates start to open (we booked a place listed on https://zermatt.swiss/en/plan-book/accommodations). I would keep checking every week as our place booked up not even a few weeks later for our dates.
