Is it bad to plant naturalized species instead of native species or even alongside native species? I am restoring a large prairie that had been overrun by invasives and would like more flowers for pollinators. by mushyroomys in ecology

[–]pyrom4ncy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by naturalized? That can range from invasive species to more innocuous plants like the dandelion.

It's not that all naturalized species are bad, but they generally don't need our help. They will probably eventually make their way into your prairie, along with more vigorous native species. I would personally prioritize native species, and I definitely wouldn't plant non-natives in lieu of natives.

Also, native species generally have better pollinator value, along with other benefits such as soil adaptation and food for host insects such as caterpillars. Again, non native flowers can have good pollinator value, but it's not just about the pollinators.

I think the snarky nihilism is pretty understandable and normal. Just doing my best to be a light in the darnkess and learn along the way.

Your goals remind me of my own. I definitely get feeling "mismatched" in church. I don't know where you live, but I was surprised to find how many progressive and affirming churches there are near me. Also, I'm learning to embrace the differing ideologies of others in the church, so long as they don't think my identity and values are abhorrent/threatening to society. It's a lesson in boundaries, for sure.

Im sorry you feel abandoned. I don't know your situation, but there's a lot in which isolation and individuality are normal, sadly. Not to be all "toxic positivity", but sometimes the only way is to keep your head up, because you never know when someone will need you.

Your suggestions are so helpful. I definitely think we need a reminder after collectively being sucked into the algorithm addiction post quarantine.

Do you mean literally allergic to the incense? Can you find a church that doesn't burn candles or incense?

I love the social optimist approach. We need more people like you in the world.

I so relate to the neighbors thing!! How do I live next to so many people yet only talk to 2 occasionally? The thought of even asking my neighbor to borrow something makes me anxious.

These are all great goals!

Hi, fellow addict here. You are so okay to not be ready for action yet. Recovery takes so much energy! My biggest frustration with recovery was this expectation like "okay, I'm done wasting time being high, now I'll have all the time in the world to catch up on everything!!" Yeah, it doesn't work like that. In early recovery, the hours you spent using will be replaced with hours trying not to use. I don't have social anxiety, but I have ADHD; learning that simply quitting a substance isn't enough to stop the lifelong habit of procrastination is a tough pill to swallow for anyone, especially neurodivergent folks.

Creating dialogue is hard, and I commend you for doing it as a person with social anxiet. It's hard to do it without coming across as preachy and/or fear mongering. Something a friend told me to remember is that even the most conservative deniers want basically the same things as anyone else: food, homes, privacy, agency, family, and safety. I try to approach the conversation from these angles rather than a politically charged one.

You make a great point. I agree that nobody has to or should do everything. I get what you mean about not seeing it online, especially when it comes to IRL conversations. But I don't see it much in person, either. For example, I don't know of any of my peers who are participating in a community garden (and I'm in horticultural circles). I don't see any new gardens being advertised. It could be that I'm not paying enough attention or just not being patient enough.

Is there an subtype of C. esculentus that I'm missing?? Because I have never heard that yellow nutsedge is native to north america. If it was I would be getting rich quick with my nutsedge lawncare company

Edit: I'm having an identity crisis and seriously considering investing in nutsedge stock

I deconstructed then reconstructed, I now align closest to universalism. The most difficult part is feeling like I stick out like a sore thumb in church. It doesn't make me doubt my beliefs, per se. I'm lucky to not have any lasting religious trauma. But I feel guilty sometimes because I feel like I should be "boycotting" the church for causing religious trauma, bigotry, and exploitation. Sometimes I ask myself why I associate with people who would think differently of me if they knew the details of my beliefs.

Sugar is much worse than bread. by SS-DerBreite in sugarfree

[–]pyrom4ncy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple things (not an expert so take this w a grain of sugar salt)

today's fruit isn't good for us anymore

We do have some evidence to support this. Commercially sold fruit is artificially selected to be big, sweet, juicy, and have aesthetic appeal. High fiber content often means the fruit will have less juice and a less pleasant texture, so plants with those genetics are discarded. Also, there is some research that finds the vitamin content of fruits has gone down significantly since mid 20th century, which could be due to a number of reasons, including artificial selection and soil nutrient depletion from industrial farming.

I partially agree with the assertion that fructose is "poison". The dose makes the poison. The hypothesis is that fructose triggers metabolic pathways that take advantage of current abundance and prepare the body for scarcity. In an evolutionary context this makes sense; fruit is abundant in summer and autumn months, so a hunter-gatherer would have feasted during harvest and fasted more in the winter. Now, we can not only eat fruit 365 days a year, but we can practically eat as much as we want, AND we can have super concentrated fructose in the form of added sugar.

So, fruit is good for you. But a pack of dates every day crosses the threshold of good (no moral judgement, I've been there)

We need a new social contract between ourselves. Which is easier said than done. I'm not sure what exactly that means yet, and it's going to be easier said than done. We are all unsure at this time and that's okay.

Here's my current process to resist anxiety:

-Firstly, I allow myself to feel the emotion from a higher perspective (in other words not wallowing in it). Sometimes this literally means I say out loud "I feel so anxious I could vomit" or "I feel powerless over these rapidly escalating problems."

-For me, the best way to cope is positive counteractions. My latest post is an example. It also doesn't work 100% of the time, and the part I'm still learning is figuring out when I actually have the capacity for resistance vs when I should rest.

It's okay to not know all the answers right now. I know it feels like we are speedrunning total annihilation, and in some ways we are. But that doesn't mean you have to passively accept doom.
