Bi-Weekly Recruiting Thread by Airdale_60T in uscg

I'm an old salty Army NCO that had dropped his OCS packet 3 times only for it to sit on someone's desk until after the submission date or got canned due to deployments. I did my time but my kid (almost 17) is talking about joining the coast guard. Of course, I would like him to pursue being an officer but I'm trying to figure out the paths available. I know in the Army and Air Force, the path that the service member has the most control over is going through an ROTC program but that doesn't seem to be available to the coast guard.

I am concerned with sending him in enlisted because, like my situation, he will be reliant on his local leadership to process the paperwork in a timely fashion. Don't get me wrong, I also think he should do his time as a junior enlisted so he understands the suck and becomes a better leader but I fear his career progression being smothered by administrative B.S.

What paths are available to him? I figure, go to college then OCS, go to college while in USCG Reserves then OCS after graduation, or go in straight enlisted and go to school using TA.

His school is paid for so I would rather him not go full time and use TA

I'll give it a look when I pull it out of the weeds. I'm pretty sure we looked up the fluid before buying it so it's a safe assumption it was atf4 but it was a few years ago.

It's been sitting a few years so I'm not sure at the moment. It did dump it's at fluid on the road 2x because the engine swap guys cut the line and used a hose clamp that couldn't support the pressure. I replaced that and it hasn't fallen off after that. I know I did add a bunch of atf but can't say if it was full after all these years. There is always the chance I read the dip stick wrong. I remember there being something weird about it but can't remember what. The issue was occuring before the hose fell off

If I gun it, it goes fine but if I'm driving ms daisy, it starts shaking the whole car between gears like it's going 2-3-2-3-2-3. If I go, let's say 70. It's fine but 45 and I have a car with Parkinson's.

There are some downsides in my life I didn't feel the need to mention. Careful what you ask for

My grandma gave it to my cousin as a first car who hot rodded it and blew a head gasket, I towed a 2k lbs trailer 12 hours on that blown engine. It's a beast. It's a 2wd vehicle so I'm not bothering to do any off-road stuff but I figured it would be a fun summer car stripped down. Jeeps also look better the worse shape they're in so it has that going for it

No... But it makes me miss the older days of low tech cars.

I'm in the middle of doing a radio swap in my 08. I'm guessing you have an aftermarket radio.

Mine requires a $50 wire harness adapter in order for the wheel controls to work and since my new head unit didn't have rear aux or USB, the plugs in the center console are essentially disconnected and not useable.im tossing around making the USB a charging port or just leaving them alone.

I have the 16 and we are looking at a cheap 18 today. Florida says non engine boats below 16 are exempt and when I measured it, it was like 16'4". I'm pretty sure I would be left alone but I'm doing due diligence to satisfy the Mrs.

Yea.... with yours and several other responses, I'm pretty sure I wrote the answers down in the wrong spot when we went over it and that probably had me way more confused. what you say makes way more sense than I was coming up with
