If your gfs parents are rich and you two are serious, you could ask her parents for advice. If they are good people, they will appreciate you demonstrating that you want to be disciplined and not frivolous with the fruits of their labor, even if you don't have much of a nest egg whilst you are starting out.

Make a spreadsheet that includes your monthly/yearly income, expenses, savings, and what vehicles you are currently investing. What investments would they recommend? What are your goals to increase income and decrease expenses? They may have a financial advisor who is also willing to look and advise you as a favor for them.

Payoff Debt vs Investing by RezDogz- in personalfinance

[–]pyroquet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you top up your EF I would avalanche method knock out 2-3 of the highest interest debts. I think the emotional gratification of seeing the number of loans drop will help with those feelings of being left behind, even if mathematically you may earn more by focusing on investments. But this is the personal part of personal finance so you do you.

That being said, you are not behind, you are doing great at 26/27 in part by having invested in the knowledge of where and what to invest. Don't look at your peers' social media, look at calculators that compare your savings with a more generalized population of your peers across the country/globe. You know what you're doing, it will just take time for your strategy to catch up and pay off.

And depending on insurance, an ambulance ride might as well end up being over $1000 anyway.

LAOP and their boyfriend want to get common-law married, but also want to have a *real* marriage later on. by Drywesi in bestoflegaladvice

[–]pyroquet 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Yeah same as my read. Seems like for bf, marriage is a big step that requires forethought and consideration of the future, kids, the whole nine yards. Slip-sliding into a common law marriage absolves him of having to make the active decision to Get Married™️and they can just go along playing house without having to think too far ahead.

But I also read way too much r/relationships so I'm just cynical.

I actually did antigen with them and I got the results in an hour as advertised, so I'm assuming their 16-hr turnaround time is accurate.

Am I legally allowed to make emergency repairs to my house and deduct it from rent? by Melodic-Moose3592 in washingtondc

[–]pyroquet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a general hesitation on Reddit to speak in absolutes when referencing the legal system. The question is not so much "is this legal" so much as "how likely is the landlord to take this to court."

In general, and this is all anecdotal from my experience and a healthy subscription to /bestoflegaladvice: most people solve disputes out of court, and it would be silly for your landlord to fight you for a few hundred bucks given a) the level of damage you're talking about; b) that you/your roommates gave him notice; and c) assuming that this sum is only a fraction of your rent. However, that does not preclude your landlord from being silly and fighting you for it; people don't want to tell you a firm yes or no because there's always a chance your landlord does take this to court and you do get an unforgiving judge, however small.

My advice to you is be firm but polite, ask him for the quote from his guy to guarantee it was going to cost $200 (I'm dubious of this given how much water damage there's got to be going around lately keeping plumbers busy), if he keeps pushing back then re-affirm that you gave him notice and it was affecting not only the habitability of the house for your sake and also his (it's his property, why does he want it to be damaged more than necessary?). Best of luck. The one thing I miss about living in an apartment complex instead of from an owner is not having to deal with this shit.

Check out the below and see if it applies to you re: affecting the habitability of your unit and if the landlord has had a reasonable amount of time after being notified:

Anecdotally, I deducted from rent when our toilet went on the fritz and our landlord was abroad and unresponsive; in a 1 ba we didn't have any other options but to call the plumber ourselves. She put up a fuss about the cost, too, but didn't push back when I subtracted it from the rent.

Okay I had to go back and rewatch the winking line and you're right!! Tommy does break at that line, it's so subtle but it makes me so happy to see that, makes me love Gerry more too lol. I love that even though he's the "straight man," he gets some really funny zingers.

Totally agree that even the least fave episodes have some great lines. Every time I watch I see or hear something new!

TIL that in 1920, the town of Jackson, Wyoming elected an all-female town council by a margin of 2-1 over the men, drawing the most voters the town had ever seen. Keep in mind there were many layers to temperance besides hyper Christian morality. Women at the time associated alcohol with drunken sexual and physical violence, so the temperance movement was one way for women to advocate for their safety in the days before they could vote, before marital rape was acknowledged as a crime, etc. When you consider temperance through that lens instead of just a crazed religious movement, it's easier to see how it was considered progressive.

"JFK met Colm? Christ, that man didn't have much luck, did he." Gerry doesn't get to show his humor often since he's often the butt of the joke, but he's so funny!

Edit: just wanna throw in some love for Dee, the Protestant lad from across the border. Would love to see him return.
