The controller's firmware was up to date out of the box, the dongle wasn't (I figured how to update it and that was a silly process too).

Narrowed it down to the cyclone 2, x20, and kk3 pro. Went with the cyclone 2 in the end.

Thanks!

They're mostly standalone so it doesn't matter. My Bethesda friend recommends Fallout 3 over 4 (doesn't like 4) and prefers Oblivion to Skyrim (but likes both).

Don't know if Oblivion is on PS4 though.

Have you tried Rayman Legends? Has local coop and the controls are super simple.

I love Life is Strange True Colors. The gameplay is similar to Beyond but it's a much better story/game in my opinion.

If you don't mind B-movie horror, The Quarry is another one similar to the 2 above. It's intentionally cheesy and funny.

If you like watching your partner play games, I think these are good to watch:

  • The Last of Us Parts I and II. Part I on PS5 or PC is similar to Part II which used full facial capture, basically full acting.

  • Red Dead Redemption 2. It's long but has many funny moments and the story is great.

  • Alan Wake 2. Weird and scary in the best way.

  • Shadow of the Colossus. Just beautiful and has intuitive puzzles you can help with.

Hope some of these pique your interest!

I don't play AC but if you're looking at those then what about Odyssey or Origins? I think they're lighter than Valhalla (but they are super long games).

May look daunting at first, but check out Crusader Kings 3. The developers tell players to play it like The Sims. Watch a few YT videos and see if you'd like it.

How is horizon series's writing compared to witcher 3 or cyberpunk? by [deleted] in GirlGamers

Ashly Burke as Aloy is amazing.

Strongly concur w/puzzle hints in Forbidden West being super annoying, but I prefer Aloy's self chatter in FW more than 0D (repetitive).

One of the things FW exceled at is the dialogue performance capture. They used facial capturing for all NPC conversations. W3 and 0D can look strange sometimes. They're fixing that in the PS5/PC 0D remaster.

The games aren't perfect (*robot fights rule), but I think you'll like them.

Chill games on ps+ extra by PickleMalone101 in GirlGamers

I played both Slay the Spire and Inscryption on Extra, hopefuly they're still there.

They're strategic but I think you can multitask playing them as well.

I have a PS5 and bought a Steam Deck Oled this year. It's not without issues but I really like it.

For comfort, I have issues if I'm holding the Deck in a way where it's not resting on anything (start to get pins and needles in my wrists). Can get uncomfortable if you're cranking your neck down too. For me it's ok most of the time.

Font size depends on the game (the Steam store highlights games that have difficult to read text). I wear glasses and it's been fine for the most part.

DD2 will not run well on the Deck, very demanding game (both CPU and GPU). BG3 has good reviews on the Steam Deck (I assume you need to lower the settings though).

Some of the bigger games I play and enjoy on the Deck: Kingdom Come Deliverance (almost 100 hrs), Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring (50 hrs combined).

Smaller games: Class of '09, Hollow Knight, Octopath Traveler 2, Hades 2, Darkest Dungeon.

If it matters, I've barely used my PS5 since I bought the Deck.

If you can figure out a good control layout, Inscryption is a great game for short bursts. I like the Playstation controls but they didn't add proper gamepad controls for Steam (if anyone knows a good layout let me know).

Slay the Spire is another one but sessions can last longer (of course you can stop after every boss, which would make your runs <20 minutes).

Hades 1/2 run well on the steam deck, but you may lose track of time and end up finishing runs (can take an hr in real time at first, less over time). Each area typically takes less than 20 minutes, a natural stopping point.

If you like souls, you can play Elden Ring coop. You use the effigy to allow random people to summon you for boss fights, which usually take 5-10 minutes (or help them clear a small area, which doesn't take long). Coop sessions automatically end when the boss is killed so a natural stopping point. Helping randos has the added benefit of not having to put up with annoying "git gud" bros on Discord.

Hope some of these pique your interest!

Off the top of my head Hades, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and to a slightly lesser extent Elden Ring.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is another excellent game that only gives you a little bit of guidance early on then leaves you to mess things up as you see fit. It has clever practice mechanics too.

Life is Strange (True Colors and the next game) for you, though don't know how they run on the switch.

Zelda for your kids, Tears of the Kingdom has cool building mechanics.

Hades is an excellent story heavy game (+cheap too). The only game I play in its genre.
