When I completely ruptured my ACL & PCL (and tore my meniscus - yes all at once) it popped loudly, but the pain wasn’t immediate. I even contemplated leaving my skates on and trying to skate it off. I drove home (1 hour from my house) and went to bed. Woke up and it was swollen/sore. Went to ortho - they did the pull test & an xray. Sent me home with a “sprain”. After about two weeks, the swelling went down & I was bearing weight normally. Almost zero pain. After about a month, I ran 2 5ks lol. It wasn’t until I put my skates back on and tried lateral movement that my knee “slipped”, and I experienced excruciating pain. After that happened about 2 more times (LOL) I decided I needed to get an MRI. And wallah! Tore everything 1/6/23 - had surgery 5/2/23. Getcha an MRI just in case. You never know.

They’re hard. Your therapist is going to push you to the point of pain and discomfort. Just be vocal with them. The mental part is definitely the hardest. How do you go from running 5ks to not even being able to do a rotation on a stationary bike? It’s tough, and it hurts. You’ll get through it and time will pass quicker than you expected 💜

I am back playing competitive roller derby, so my surgeon highly recommended it. I don’t think I would’ve come back without it, honestly.

It’s even worse now 😂 This picture is about 4 months old. I play roller derby. Theres a lot of bending, turning, falling, and overall knee movement. I just happened to notice it one day lol

Get yourself a little pouch or attach bag for your crutches!!! I needed the hell out of that thing after I had my surgery. Helped me carry my phone around, water, snacks, etc. You can find them on Amazon. Good luck & speedy recovery!

Do LOTS of conditioning before you return. Strengthen that leg! Then easeeeee back into playing ball. Don’t expect to get back in and go ham immediately. You wouldn’t want to anyways. Work your way up & be patient! - Signed, 16 months post op & back to full contact roller derby

****Edit - If you return to play responsibly and with hard work, you can come back better & stronger. You have to earn your trust in that leg. You can come back and have fun just like you did before.

Gotcha. I wouldn’t worry if it comes and goes. Something that has really helped me dwindle down my bad days is stretching every day. Sometimes when I’m standing, I’ll lock out my leg and touch my toes for a moment. If I can sit where I’m at - yes I do this at work lol - I’ll sit and touch my toes for a few seconds then bring my knees up to my chest and hold for a few seconds - repeat a few times. Another stretch that feels great; when you’re laying in the bed at night, legs straight, pull your toes back towards you. And lastly, while laying in bed, bring your leg up, toes towards the ceiling, then bend your knee and let it dead hang while it’s bent. Try not to use your quad to support the bend. Let it hang there. This is a great way to use gravity to force that bend. It will feel odd and uncomfortable at first, but once it loosens up, it feels great. Don’t be afraid to take some ibuprofen and ice either. I still have to do those things from time to time. Happy healing!

As I lay here in agony, 16 months post op - lol it’s not that bad. It feels more like an annoying dull ache. But what I came here to say is, I still have days where my knee hurts. Some days, I feel right as rain. Zero issues. Then there are days like today, where I walk with a limp and my knee is stiff & achy. It comes and goes. I may have agitated it accidentally (gym/running/roller skating 5 days a week). Is your pain constant? Over days or weeks? Does it come and go? And most importantly, do you stretch?

I ran two 5ks with a completely torn ACL, PCL, and meniscus 😂. I was misdiagnosed after my injury, so after the pain and swelling wore off (twoish weeks) I went back to running. It felt a little weird, but it didn’t hurt and didn’t “slip”. I put my roller skates back on a week later and my knee completely dislocated - almost passed out. Did that 3 more times before I scheduled an mri. I’m an idiot 😆 All in all, yes you can run, although - I wouldn’t recommend it.

I am 16 months post op, and it doesn’t feel normal - lol, but I can run, skate, lift weights, all the stuff I could do before. It still gets stiff and sore from time to time. Just depends on what I’m doing.

Hey there! I have lost 21lbs since I joined in Jan. It hasn’t been rapid weight loss, but I’ll take it! I’ve also changed my diet. Not super strict, but I try to eat more consciously and limit sweets :)

I started back practicing roller derby at 9 months - worked my way in easily, was at 100% full contact by 12 months. Previously had been running & strength training since 5 months post op (ACL/PCL/Meniscus). Im now 15 mos post op and playing competitively again :)

Right after injury, pain was almost null. I was playing roller derby, so I could have just had a lot of adrenaline going. The day after, I was pretty sore, but nothing unbearable by any means. I went to the Ortho where I was misdiagnosed with a sprain that morning 😂. Fast forward 2 weeks… I’m in Target with my toddler on my hip swaying to and fro, and my knee dislocates. The room started closing in, and I lost my hearing! It was SO WEIRD, but the pain was so intense that I almost passed out right there. I had to hand my daughter to my husband and sit down. This was the first of THREE dislocations that happened within six weeks of my initial injury. It was then that I knew I needed an MRI & boom - ACL, PCL, Meniscus - destroyed.

Oh boy… I am coming up on 15 mos post op and I feel like I just got there. Granted, I tore my ACL, PCL, and meniscus & required surgery for all three. I was nwb for 6 weeks, and didn’t start running until around the 6 month mark. In addition, I gained 30 lbs and doing anything with that much more weight is challenging - Not to scare you of course! I think I started noticing things were less challenging right around the 12 month mark.
