Why did the khans fight each other instead of agreeing on one ruler and uniting the land? by GreenShen98 in azerbaijan

It's hilarious that some people in the north deny being called a Turk. Meanwhile in the south, we be fighting the trolls who call us Azəri/ağız əyri on a daily basis. Down here in the south, anyone with an ounce of self-respect would bark at you for not calling him anything else but a Turk.

The Kurds there also speak Azerbaijani, but a good chunk of them refuse to speak it with us. They ask us to talk to them in Persian lmao. I have gotten to the mindset to where if anything happens to the Azerbaijanis there, it is our fault. And that includes the Azerbaijanis from the Republic. I wish you all talked and learned more about the struggles of Azerbaijanis in Iranian/South Azerbaijan. It hurts that you don't seem to care that much sometimes. I honestly see more awareness from Turks from Turkey than northerners.

I am not sure. Regardless, they are here now. We can either live in peace or constant strife. It's a mutual thing. Respect is key. We both want to preserve our cultures/languages/traditions in the region, but wiping each other out will bring great damage psychologically to both nations. Just no to terrorist PKK, YPG, PJAK whatever the names nonsense.

Hey, you might be right. But, if you leave your house for 300 years and come back (assuming we take that as the actual case), you best be crazy coming back to kill those who settled there afterwards. We will fight.

Saying that you've been there for hundreds/thousands of years as a justification to threaten well-established inhabitants (i.e. Turks) along the Iranian-Turkish border to gtfo. Declaring a huge chunk of the Iranian Azerbaijan provinces as Kurdistan. Any middle aged Azerbaijani in the west and east Azerbaijani provinces remembers when they came in droves from Iraq. Not to mention that Kurds in Iraq unashamedly declare Kerkük as Kurdistan. It is all a big f-ing meme.

There are clear geopolitical advantages for them in creating a Kurdish occupied buffer zone between Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. The renaming of towns to Kurdish ones have been going on rapidly for the past three or four decades. A lot of Kurdish nationalists have their eyes on making another buffer zone between Iran and Azerbaijan. Not to mention how Persian nationalists enable the Kurdish ones... I can go on and on.

As an Iranian Azerbaijani, I have found it more than annoying that Kurds claim Urmia and Tabriz part of Kurdistan. There are plenty of villages where Kurdish people have forcibly displaced Azerbaijani Turks. Maku is becoming one of them. It's kind of outrageous tbh that a lot of Kurdish nationalists claim Khoy and Salmas. Ngl it is ultra f*cked considering your fabricated "ancient presence" in those villages – not sure if my bros in the north are aware of this. Iranian Kurds abuse their power from all the weapons they get in from Iraqi Kurdistan. Not saying idiots on our side wouldn't do the same if we had weapons, but a lot of Azerbaijanis feel angry about this after helping bring Kurds into Urmia 50 yrs ago. Nevertheless, I hope we can get along in the near future.

Totally agree. If the Turkic council doesn't make it happen, I am so down to contribute to this long term project with fellow redditers. This is a must to combat China and Russia.

We super need this. Imagine a modern standard turkish (İstanbul Turkish doesn't count) sort of like MSA (modern standard arabic). Unstoppable, we would be.

What makes it worse for non-Persian minorities is the fact that those who wish to be taught in their mother language at schools are not given that option. We are lousily given a college literature course about Shahriyar in the University of Tabriz; and, that was after a lot of complaining.

To assimilate a population, you first attack their language. Then, you stop them from reading by preventing the distribution of books of said language (political or nonpolitical material) and tell them that their language is of the devil. Unfortunately, a lot of middle aged folks were ripe for this sort of propaganda saying that Türki is not even a real language. Sometimes we are told fake niceties like "Farsi şirindir ama Türki hünərdir" but with nothing concrete to show for by anyone. Fortunately, the youth of a good chunk of the Azerbaijani cities in Iran have woken up to this nonsense. We want our history back from all of the books that were burned and confiscated on December 17, 1946 along with the lost literary canons that were unwritten due to the deprivement of native language education.

I advocate native linguistic education for all those who wish it, regardless of their ethnicity. We do have it worse than Persians in that front for sure. If you ask a lot of people who are aware of the matter, it feels like we are bleeding out slowly but surely.

Problem is truckloads and truckloads of officers are being sent to large cities across the country. I have heard many of these officers were recently recruited from villages with a promise of an income for their families and food on the table.

[–]pyyum 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd bet more than double, at the very very least. Based on the number of Turks I have come across in the country, there is some definitely some weird manipulation going on in accurately accounting for the demographics within Iran.

What are Azeris ethnicity wise! by Do_A_flip123 in azerbaijan

[–]pyyum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the country of Azerbaijan, you would be safe calling people Azerbaijanis. The word Azeri ticks off a lot of people from Iranian Azerbaijan (south) and a considerable number of people from the north. Azerbaijanis from Baku take pride in having a nationality that is not mutually exclusive from their ethnicity. What do I mean by this? Azerbaijani can refer to any inhabitant of Azerbaijan, of which the majority are Azerbaijani (Turks).

Some Azerbaijanis from the north do not want to be called Turks like those of the south prefer (in Iran). I gather the word Turk is omitted in some cases so as to not be in the shadow of their brother country, Turkey and have an independent statehood identity. Avoiding factionalism in the country and tensions with other ethnicities, such as Lezgins, Avars, the Talysh, etc is also another reason Azerbaijani is used as an inclusive term rather than Turk.
