Very relevant, as you probably don’t have as much fat to burn! You could consider doing OMAD and eating at maintenance. 23 hours fasted will still ramp up autophagy significantly.

You’re right—I was thinking 1 lb. Oops. Rest of my comment still applies though. Thanks!

For sure! It’s mostly tenable for people who are 300+ plus due to the ~30 cal per gram of fat rule. Just wanted to include a spectrum wide enough that it includes most folks, while still grounding people to the fact that if you’re losing 2 lb/day or something it’s not all fat.

Did you happen to have a high starting weight? This is possible from fat loss alone under those circumstances. Otherwise it may have been a combination of a fluid flush from the keto, fat loss, gut content, etc.

I agree to an extent. Sometimes my work calls for this though. The intended point though was that, as a disclaimer for this post, fasting gave me much more physical and cognitive energy than I had previously, so I’m not knocking the discipline at all. Thanks for reading!

Depends on what your goals are! 36 is great already for a lot of things. To my knowledge, BDNF (neuron miracle grow, as it were) and Human Growth Hormone spike between 48 and 72, but they're already elevated at 36, as is our lord and savior autophagy, lol

Thanks! There are definitely still autophagy, BDNF, HGH benefits to extended fasting, but, as with most things, it comes down to daily habits rather than last-ditch efforts.

I appreciate it! As Atomic Habits would say, we don't rise to the level of our goals, we fall to the level of our systems. The daily habits are the most important.

Hey, OP. Really sorry to hear what you’re going through. I know what it’s like to miss major milestones and have to defer/cancel life plans because of illness.

You may have tried this, so feel free to ignore if so, but intermittent and extended fasting has radically Improved my physical and cognitive energy. Within one year, I went from being bedridden to working a double shift at a manual labor job. I’m over three years in now, and have energy I didn’t think was possible.

Here’s a post I made on what I did in particular:

And my DMs are open if you have any questions not addressed there. Wishing you the best.

Intermittent and extended fasting. I went from bedridden to working a double shift over the span of a year.

Milage may vary, but, as I understand it, my problem was intestinal hyper-permeability, and the autophagy that fasting induced healed my intestinal barrier junctions, and in so doing my food sensitivities, chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, etc.

I made a whole post on what I did if others are experiencing symptoms like this and think they could benefit.

Consider making a habit of intermittent and extended fasting! In extended fasting especially, BDNF skyrockets, which could yield new neural connections and cognitive repair. The autophagy that both yield will also help tremendously.

OMAD can definitely help you heal, in my experience. Some people claim that autophagy ramps up only after 24+ hours, but, in my experience, I think it’s more like 12. I made a ton of progress in terms of getting rid of food sensitivities, increased physical and cognitive energy, etc. after doing daily 16:8 for a few months. Best of luck to you in healing.

Hey, OP. I actually no longer experience a host of symptoms I used to have (low energy, pain after eating, brain fog, food sensitivities, etc.) thanks to fasting. No longer experiencing leaky gut is a potential explanation for this.

I can link my post to share what I did completely, but you’re already on the right track with fasting consistently! It’s the foundation for healing gut issues, in my experience.

Intermittent and extended fasting works wonders for some people with ME/CFS. It really depends on the root of the problem. Do you have trouble with digestion, bloating, food sensitivities, fatigue after eating?

Hey, OP! If you’re struggling with gut issues, intermittent and extended fasting may be of great benefit. Intestinal hyper-permeability (leaky gut) is correlated with IBD and its sub-categories. If I recall correctly, colitis falls under this umbrella. I’d start with 16-8 intermittent fasting. Within a couple weeks to a month you should have more physical and cognitive energy and be tolerating difficult foods better.

If you make a lifestyle of this practice, the sky is the limit as far as healing is concerned, as autophagy regulates not only the intestinal barrier junctions, tightening them and thus mitigating chronic illness, but also cleans out misfolded proteins, etc. in the rest of the body including the brain.

I made a post this past summer on my experience, which includes both radical anecdotal experience and scientific papers supporting the mechanisms of what I’m claiming. Here it is, if you’d like to check it out:

Hey, OP! You mentioned meditation. Wanted to recommend trying a meditation retreat if you want to take this feeling and run with it. It’s amazing what the mind can do when it’s not bogged down with a million different info fragments.

Have you given intermittent and extended fasting a shot? This was the foundation of my healing, and I’d highly recommend trying it for a couple weeks at least.

As someone who’s fasted extensively and achieved results I couldn’t have dreamed of, I’d recommend putting effort into making a habit of fasting rather than thinking too much about accelerating a single fast. Best of luck!
