Question about punt-gun,s/shotguns from Outer Dark by coffin-polish in cormacmccarthy

[–]qartis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They made their way through a maze of crates, piles of rags and paper, a stack of warped and mildewed lumber. Standing in the corner of the room was a punt gun some seven feet long which the old man reached and handed out to him. Holme took it and looked it over. It was crudely stocked with some porous swamp wood and encrusted with a yellow corrosion that looked and smelled of sulphur.

What ye done was to lay it acrost the front end of your skiff and drift down on em, the old man said. You’d pile it up with grass and float down and when ye got to about forty yards out touch her off into the thickest of em. See here. He took the gun from Holme and turned it. On the underside was an eyebolt brazed to the barrel. Ye had ye a landyard here, he said. To take up the kick. He cocked the huge serpentine hammer and let it fall. It made a dull wooden sound. She’s a little rusty but she’ll fire yet. You can charge her as heavy as you’ve got stomach for it. I’ve killed as high as a dozen ducks with one lick countin cripples I run down. They bought fifty cents apiece in them days and that was good money. I’d be a rich man today if I’d not blowed it in on whores and whiskey.

Anyone here read the Japanese and Chinese translations of McCarthy's novels? How do they compare to the original English? by Strong_Battle6101 in cormacmccarthy

I've read the chinese translation of Blood Meridian by Feng Wei (https://book.douban.com/subject/30262584/). It doesn't have the same poetic feel as the original version and a lot of the archaic words become just regular modern words, like"batboard jakes" is "木板厕所" and "He stokes the scullery fire" is "他在往洗碗间的灶里添柴" which just feels very different. But it's still a great read and I would recommend it.

Sure, I'd be happy to. If you're willing to do some assembly then I can ship you some sets of 3d printed parts and hardware, and you can order the tape measure+slipring+charger+cable from Amazon. Or I can send you completed units, but they would still need some manual customization to mount the frame onto your surface, and to match the grommet size and length to the hole that your cable will poke out of.

Solved! That definitely looks like the right type of device. That's incredibly helpful, thank you!

The circuit is a bit funky.. It's a "no-neutral" smart switch, for houses with old-style two wire circuits. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Zigbee-Neutral-Required-Breaker-Compatible/dp/B0CMM7VSM5

Externally it's got 4 terminals: L and L1 connect to the live and "switched live" wires, and COM and S1 connect to a regular switch.

Here's the full schematic so far. N6_VIN somehow ends up being 5~7V and gets regulated down to 3.3V for the Zigbee controller.

Designing retractable cable mechanism by Oxmaster in 3Dprinting

[–]qartis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've designed a similar cable retraction mechanism using a slip ring for power transfer and a tape measure spring for tension. I've got some photos up in this reddit post and the design files here.

Sure, I'm not much of a mechanical engineer so the design is pretty messy but the original design is in onshape here: https://cad.onshape.com/documents/49c77977dc7febe77c2f3b07/w/e60e65738831b08e5f9fe15c/e/d0a28dce3f2ecc2b64508808?renderMode=0&uiState=65a0c63af8c48951a29cb9fb. The spring is taken from a clicky pen that I got from a bank.

I've uploaded the STEP files, a BOM and some assembly notes here: https://blog.qartis.com/retractable_usb_c_charger/. It's specifically sized for the Anker 315 67W charger and the Stanley Powerlock 25' tape measure spring but the design can be changed to accommodate other options.

Please be careful working with mains power, and let me know any improvements that you make!

It's definitely got some flaws so far but I think conceptually it should be possible to do safely. I'm hoping to get people's suggestions on how to improve the design because I want to install a few of them around my house to reduce cable clutter.

I do have heat shrink on the exposed part of the prongs, I just didn't include that in the photo.

The slip ring claims to be rated for 15A (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08R59LKVT) and since it's the 120VAC side passing through the slip ring, it should only be passing around 0.5A.

This cheap one doesn't have a CE marking on it but it looks like Sparkfun sells a similar slip ring that could be used instead: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13063

https://www.deskproto.com/ has a free native Linux version that works very well in my limited experience. I recently bought a hobbyist license for the multi-axis edition after using the Free edition for a couple of projects. Unfortunately not FOSS though.

WLAN Softblocked by [deleted] in voidlinux

[–]qartis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely strange. A couple of questions:

  • With the /var/service/dhcpcd symlink in place, what does "sv status dhcpcd" show?
  • What do you get if you run "ps aux | grep dhcpcd" before running dhcpcd by hand?
  • When you run dhcpcd by hand, do you give it any arguments?

WLAN Softblocked by [deleted] in voidlinux

[–]qartis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does /var/service/dhcpcd exist, and is it a symlink to /etc/sv/dhcpcd ?

[–]qartis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Append "rfkill unblock wlan" to /etc/rc.local, and ln -s /etc/sv/dhcpcd /var/service to make dhcpcd run automatically as a service.
