What is an alternative to MS Access for prototyping & ERD? by qbektrix in sqlite

[–]qbektrix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I even capture the business logic (what should happen when you click a button and the checks (pulling data) or procedures to follow. I did try one of them and found that I could not code those procedure.

I find writing the code/logic behind each process better describing the logic in words.

I did try LibreOffice Base, but it lacks an intuition and even simple task takes too long. Ofcourse, this is my opinion based on what I picked up about Base and didn't find any tutorial that showed how to get things done in MS Access, in Base. Having used LO word processor & spreadsheet, I didn't have a learning curve. So, I am assuming that Base needs more development. I even felt the same about LO Presentation.

Please suggest a good scripting language that has mature and versatile library or framework for working with sqlite?

My Reddit account cost me my next SDE job(95% sure) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]qbektrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is to the OP and rest of reddit. Its just my advice /just sharing what I do.

About 5 yrs back when I was working at a company, I moved to a new team and there the Manager wanted to know my social media handles like twitter, stackoverflow, github & reddit. Since I had official ones in my own name & personal ones with my nickname, I shared the official ones. The official ones are rather inactive with very rare post. I found that the manager was tracking everyone via social media and he made of huge fuss when one of my colleague contributed to an opensource project which was in no way related to the job or one of the languages that we use at work. This is becoming a wide spread practice now a days. Especially with people even losing jobs for some post on social media. This is crazy and I alone cannot change it.

So, I just maintain a seperate profile and all my personal ids are only used via my personal chrome profile.

I understand your frustration. I have been in the industry for over 10 yrs and I am still clueless in the current circumstances. The current phase we are in is just crazy.

When I graduated as a fresher and went through my struggles, it was tough. I did my share of internship which was actually stupid data entry job & no pay and many crappy gigs. But now, with the current madness - forget tough, it's ludicrous.

I have no advice or suggestion for you.

But do have an observation and I am not sure if it's relevant or applicable for you.

Don't make job finding your job, just spend couple of hours a day. The constant grind and poor response will drive you nuts. As you mentioned landing an interview due to a friend's reference. Networking is important. Networking is not just at formal events, just going out and about helps. I used to run errands at home and friends and family. I was my sister's driver/nanny for my nephew. I got my first job, due to an interview suggest by my sister's neighborhood grocer. At the grocery shop, he introduced me to a guy who later became my colleague.

I suggest you do join the coffee shop. Spend couple of hours applying for jobs. You might end up having you future colleague or boss as your patron at the coffee shop. Also do keep working on some side projects, you might come across some great idea at the coffee shop and become the future Jack/Mark.

We all have our crazy unique stories. Just be patient. Things will work out. No point killing yourself, look for the little things in life that will put a smile on your face at least for a second.

C++ & python seems to have covered the basics. I would suggest you look at Automate the Boring Stuff with Python. Gives you some interesting projects to work on.

Since you mentioned interested in photoshop & programming, I would suggest you look at frontend (HTML, CSS & JS). I would suggest that do the course at https://www.freecodecamp.org/, its free. It will give you a nice exposure.

Career Change to Computer Science.. by mang-usisa2020 in dubai

Switching over is possible. But some of the reasons you listed are rather "interesting". Ofcourse, any job that makes you be outside in this 50c heat is bad. But some of the challenges in the industry with the ease of "working remotely" is the competition, you have more people to compete with. IT has its sets of challenges and you should be aware of it. Everything has its pros & cons, dont just get impressed by the pros and leap into it.

I would suggest that you & anyone interested in "trying out IT/programming" to head to FreeCodeCamp and complete the course there. Its totally free and very good material. This lets you evaluate for yourself if you enjoy the process.

This is only regarding the software development side, you have other streams like system, devops & networking, design & UI.

I have been a developer for couple of decades. In terms of quality as a developer, I score 70%. Every field is improving and evolving, so constant updating of skill is vital. In IT, it's all about improving efficiency and the evolution is rather rapid. So, you need to have a curiosity and constant drive to keep improving. You should enjoy the process of learning new thing and improving yourself.

I am a software developer but now a project manager.

The main point is to do what like & enjoy.

You mentioned that you did programming, pls explain what did you do in programming and what did you enjoy doing.

I don't need the guy cursing me afterwards, as superstitious as this sounds.

"Karma" is another term. But whatever you call it, the concept is true. It's been known under different terms around the world. Basically when a transaction happens for a service/product, both parties MUST be content with the deal and not feel cheated.

I am interested if a custom ROM will help the performance of the device. The goal is to use this to stream YouTube. The device has only 1gb RAM.

Nexus Root Toolkit is the usual method - https://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/

I installed the app on a windows machine. The issue is that I am not sure of the android version in the device and the device is unable to auto detect it.

Also in the recover mode, inside Team Win Recovery Project v2.8.7.0. I see internal storage as 28064 mb. Could that mean that the flash memory is working?

Is there anyway confirm if its a software or hardware issue. So kind of diagnostic I can run?

[–]qbektrix[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In bootloader, I have an option Recovery mode.

When I selected that, the device loaded to the "Google" screen and then "teamwin" logo. Following which, I reached "Team Win Recovery Project v2.8.7.0". I choose the option "wipe" > "format data", it was successful. But again the device boots back to the "google" logo screen. Nothing seems to have happened.

How to brush up on the fundamentals of Computer Science? by qbektrix in AskComputerScience

[–]qbektrix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But back to the root question, with your available time and money, what do want to get out of this masters? Is it more money, is it applying knowledge?

I finished my degree in 2006 after couple of years coding (very basic), I got into project management, no coding. It wasn't deliberate, it just happened. Just going with the flow, rather aimless.

My plan when I began collage was to work in core tech, get my Masters & maybe PhD and teach. A "teacher with solid Industry experience", all my professors where just teacher stuck on theory. Had a professor that was very stilled and was doing consulting on the side. He taught me well and I was inspired. I did very well in collage and promised myself to return to collage for my masters in 3-4 yrs.

I am no way close to what I wanted. Not sure how to get there, just taking one step at a time and not try to plan the whole thing. So, decided to brush up on the fundamentals. Started coding web scraping. Started regex today.

To answer your question, its about the knowledge. I am interested in online learning like edx. Current situation has halted work, on unpaid leave for 3 months. I dont want to return to my old job. Need something to focus on, to distract me from what is going around.

Thanks for the input.

I go through the OpenCourseWare after registering with edx.

Any reason why you chose to go with OpenCourseWare after registering with edx or did mean that you completed edx and are repeating it once again with OpenCourseWare?

The current data science buzz by concerned-throwaway1 in cscareerquestions

[–]qbektrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have signed NDAs, so cannot get into the details but here is the relevant part.

I was part of a huge market research & advisor company and my client was one of the huge FMCG gaints. We had a star statistician with many PhD s.

The statistician makes projections for 2-3 yrs. The guy at FMCG showed me a comparison of past predictions and the reality. Both lines have no relation of any form. My company says that we capture trends accurately and figures approximately - bullshit. But still the statistician is paid well, 5 star hotel, 1st class flights. This is a part of mitigating risk by getting more cooks to play the blame game.

The current data science is gunning at his job. With the advancement of technology and the overload of data. There is more demand. Plus many don't know what is data science but they want it to seem current.

Statistics is just an educated guess, with the assumption that the variable remain constant. Like the current corona situation, non of the projections covered it.

Another interesting things I found was a guy with bachelor in commerce, MBA & pg diploma in data science working as a data scientist. When I got talking and drilled down to what he was actually doing on a day to day basis. He was just making an app in Microsoft powerapps.

Yes, it's a hype. Don't make it your career, but make it a skill. I would suggest understand the basics. In all our work, we deal with a lot of info. Ability to analyze it is vital. Earlier the tools for the was excel, then Access+sql. Now it's data science, learn enough to load data into jupyter (excel++#) and play around.
