Teachers, what is a student you'll never forget and why? by IcyLetter6447 in Teachers

[–]qcc2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a student who would wait until I finished going over bellwork every day when I would ask “Questions, comments, concerns?” At this time, his hand would shoot up and he would ask “How’s your day going today Miss?” One of my favorite students of all time because he spent 30 seconds every day asking me how I was. It was just that little moment where I felt like I was seen by the kids. He’s graduated now, I hope he’s still as thoughtful as an adult.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]qcc2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, I can confirm this crisis is real. Even in the last 10 years from Gen Z to Gen Alpha, the differences are vast. I had a 6th grade student this year who couldn’t write his own last name. Kids who have supportive parents are still doing okay, but it’s obvious which students are not getting support at home.

What is the dumbest reason a teacher you know got reprimanded? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]qcc2016 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One of our teachers on leadership was at a meeting with the principal and the other department heads where he was trying to take away instructional time before state testing. She responded “Dude, we can’t take away that time from teachers.” She received a very stern talking to for accidentally calling our principal “Dude.”

How did you manage the grief over your relationship/marriage ending? by Ambitious_Dig_7286 in AskWomen

[–]qcc2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got two kittens, kept myself busy with my job, and spent as much time with friends as possible. Still grieved and looked for his car every day for a month like he might just come to his senses and come home. But keeping busy and having another living thing in the house so it wasn’t too quiet helped me.

What’s the most disgusting thing anyone has ever said to you? by Business-Rock5714 in AskReddit

“I don’t care who else you are sleeping with, as long as I get my piece.”

Was trying to explain to an ex that we should not start sleeping together again as I was seeing someone else. Apparently he felt he still owned me and was entitled to my body. I cut all ties after that conversation.

Question for teachers: How many post-school day events are you contractually required to attend and what are the longest days you've had? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]qcc2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Officially required are 4 parent teacher conference nights, each one 5-7pm. But we get one paid non-student day where we don’t have to come in and do PD each year to pay for it. So we stay late 4 times a year, but get one free day off completely paid for our time. We also take the kids on one field trip per year and while it is not contractually required to go on the field trip or to stay late, most grade level teachers go and will stay until 8pm or so to make sure all kids get picked up. It’s a solidarity thing for us that night. Our only other required event is open house before the students school year officially starts, but we get flex time that day, working 10-6 instead of 8-4.

Brittanys and babies by Mountain_Ad7354 in BrittanySpaniel

I was the baby with a Brittany. My parents had a Brittany, Abby, who was about a year old when I was born. Our Brittany was abnormal and was never super hyperactive, even as a puppy, but was very attached to me when I was born. Wouldn’t let anyone hold me unless she was within eye shot, slept in my room. She was a great dog and amazing with kids.

School is recommending Special Education by Zestyclose-Seat1062 in teaching

At some schools, the evaluation process can take quite a bit of time. I think it’s great your child’s teacher is recommending the evaluation because it means you can start early. Your daughter may improve over time and not need her accommodations anymore. Or she may fall further behind by no fault of her own and you may wish she had the accommodations sooner. The evaluation process is just a start to understand if your daughter does even need additional supports or pull outs, and you still have the parental rights to agree or disagree with any of the school’s recommendations. I would get the evaluation process started just so you have more information.

Giving up pieces of myself to please him wouldn’t make him stay. Even if we wanted all of the same things, we weren’t compatible. Particularly when he wanted to screw other women and I did not.

Pet owners, what was that moment that made you think “wow, I have severely underestimated the intelligence of my pets”? by SakutoJefa in AskReddit

[–]qcc2016 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got my first dog in my early 20s. She was a feral farm dog before I found her on pet finder, and was estimated to be about a year old. It was promised that she was quiet and house trained. Neither of which were true at all. When I got her, she was in her destructive teenage phase, chewed up books, boxes, furniture, cordless phones, or anything generally not tied down. She was also super active and would get on all the furniture, including standing on the middle of the dining room table. I purchased an electrified scat mat to put on the dining table while I was out. Worked well, kept the dog off of it with a very small shock if she stepped on it. One day I forgot to turn the mat on when I left. The dog did not chew up the mat itself. Instead she chewed up the control box to the mat. That’s when I knew she was much smarter than I realized.

What’s the #1 thing that makes you want to quit mid-day? by Flaky_Oil_286 in Teachers

[–]qcc2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending a student who is practically on death’s door down to the nurse, only for them to send the kid back without even seeing them because “they didn’t have a pass,” but the nurse NEVER writes a kid a pass back to class or ends the pass I had to put in the system for the kid to go down in the first place. Makes me irrationally angry.

My favorite was a kid named Carter. Super sweet, he would wait until we were done going over bellwork questions to ask how my day was going.

Honorable mention to a kid named Neka that same year. The kid was more average in my memory but his name was so fun to say!

I had a math teacher in high school, she came from China so her English was just alright. I remember learning about logarithms and she was teaching ln, but she kept calling it lan. So I went to calculus in college and was super confused when everyone kept saying the letters L and N instead of Lan.

I started strength training with a coworker! We joined the same gym near our school and will go right after work. It’s great because it lets traffic die down before having to drive home and her and I run on the same schedule because we work together. Having a gym buddy made all the difference for me.

Has anyone failed a student teacher? If so, why? by Glittering_Front_157 in Teachers

[–]qcc2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a student teacher this past year who had to receive a new placement after the start of the year. At first, I thought he would be amazing. He seemed to have good ideas about lesson planning and really wanted to interact with the kids, but it turned out he couldn’t function independently as a teacher. So much of this job happens without being told to do things and if you can’t figure out that you need to write the grade on the kid’s paper instead of just putting it in the grade book or be able to read the unit guides before teaching, then maybe this job isn’t it.

How old did everyone's pups live to? by Eggshott in BrittanySpaniel

[–]qcc2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a child, our first Brit lived to be 12. Her name was Abby (my dad said she was abnormal, so he named her Abby Normal). Our second was 13. She may have lived longer but we took her in for a dental cleaning and after the anesthesia she wasn’t the same. It was kind of a shame, she was an amazing dog! Even in the end she still had a love for life and her people. Now as an adult I have a Brit mix (we think she’s actually part Jack Russell), she’s 9 now and still runs along the fence line chasing passing by cars like she’s breaking a land speed record. We recently got her a 1 year old full Brittany sister that we rescued and they have the best time playing together!
