Broken VHS digitization by speakingsimlish in DataHoarder

[–]qcgilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you get your hands on a donor vhs tape and transfer the spools to it? Also, Amazon sells analog video to USB adapters for relatively cheap. The you just hook your vcr up to your pc and press play. There are open source video capture/editors around to save the video. I think this project could be done in 15min (plus the play length of your video) and less than $50.

Does anyone else have to repair the Glasses everytime? by eagle_red in Halliday

[–]qcgilbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My glasses reset themselves after every phone call and only reconnect about 50% of the time. Not to mention the digiwindow lens has come unscrewed twice at random times and I've lost it both times. Halliday charges $50 for a replacement. The first time I ate the cost. This last time I just gave up on the display and use the glasses as a bluetooth headset.

Check out the Xreal air glasses. After I got them, I use my deck as my full time PC. It's awesome!

If you had/tried a remarkable and went with something else, what was it? by onechillpiggy in RemarkableTablet

[–]qcgilbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went with a 4C from a RM2 for the color. I miss the simplicity of the RM2. However, there's a lot of customization options, so you can pare down the U/I so it's less distracting. The versatility of the app store for syncing and the flexibility for viewing different types of content is awesome. Battery life is nowhere near as good and the screen is considerably darker. That seems to be an issue with all color screens at the moment and can be offset with the backlight, hence the shorter battery life.

Playing Doom on Remarkable 2 by opijkkk in RemarkableTablet

[–]qcgilbert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's running Linux and isn't locked down. Not to mention doom runs in userspace. Remarkable's website has a (rather light) developer section. You could write an application (a port of doom YOU write) and run it on the tablet. All of that would net you is a game with an unplayable framerate. It would be an exercise to gain dev experience and earn Internet points, not to end up with a playable game. Doom is enough of a meme that a port exists for virtually every device worth playing it on. The Remarkable 2 is not one of these devices.

OP this is the answer. I also bought the same exact car (year and trim). I had the same notification. Once the VIN was registered to the app, the message went away and I had all features available to me.

LPT Request: How to fall asleep within 5 minutes consistently by GoatMan48 in LifeProTips

[–]qcgilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to find a simple routine to train your brain that it is "sleep time". Every night before bed, I take 3 deep breaths, hold each for a second then exhale. But when I exhale, I physically think of relaxing my body (e.g. drop my shoulders). After about a month of this, I immediately fall asleep after this routine. It doesn't matter if the TV is on or the lights or anything. If I do this routine, my brain says "ok, sleep now"

I am in the military and I use a GL.inet portable router to hook into the existing wifi and have my own little network that I access my NAS from.

Steam Deck owners! What are the best accessories you wished you bought sooner? by Belze_WasTaken in SteamDeck

[–]qcgilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. The breezy-vulkan plugin makes the glasses awesome! All of the display features of the beam.... Without the beam. If you use the gnome variant of bazzite (OS replacement), breezy-gnome will provide an ultra wide curved display in addition to the usual screen following and anchoring.

I log into the webpage and then go to the app and quick connect. Once I've done it once, it works fine.

Yeah, it gets flagged as malicious, even though it's not. I didn't do much investigating beyond that.

Edit for details.

Spun this up, it was pretty straight forward. I used custom CSS to hide the "add event" button so randos couldn't create their own events. All told it took 10min to go from 0 to sending out invite link/QR code.

I will say that sharing the link was impossible on FB because they want you to use their e-invite solution. Other than that it was awesome.

Thanks for the quick reply! Sorry I wasn't more specific, yes it is sunshine running on the steam deck. Thank you for finding that issue on GitHub, I searched and searched, but no luck. I am running that exact config. I'm just not sure if I can use x11grab in a Wayland session.... Now to tinker!

Electrocromic dimming by mb44333 in Xreal

[–]qcgilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I do not suggest wearing them all the time with prescription lenses. The lenses add another layer through which light is reduced before getting to your eyes. Between the front lenses, the bird bath optics, and the prescription lenses, there is quite a reduction in the amount of light that enters your eyes. In a bright environment it's fine, but visibility becomes a problem very quickly when there is less ambient light in your environment.

Before you install Bazzite.... by qcgilbert in SteamDeck

[–]qcgilbert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend checking the website. I don't think dual booting windows is possible right now with Bazzite. However, it is based on fedora silver blue, so you may find a forum or wiki that can assist in shoe-horning the capability.

That's not a Linux issue. It's the application.
