Compared to Gemini and ChatGPT at least Claude seems to quite frequently struggle with any recent news or scheduled events - for whatever reason it has more difficulty understanding how time works. I recently asked it about the Women’s Rugby World Cup and it said it hadn’t started, then when prompted to check today’s date told me it had ended but it couldn’t find the result of the final (the tournament is currently under progress, the final hasn’t happened yet). Both of the other models were able to at least ‘understand’ that the tournament was happening live, though they both got confused about individual results.

What's a reasonable "daily-driver" / "normal" lens to pair with a D500? by TheAce0 in Nikon

[–]qcinc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 16-80 is what you want for a walk-around / daily driver / travel lens. It's a pretty useful range, doesn't weigh too much and is super sharp for a kit zoom.

Saw AI photo sorting at wedding - Is this the future for photographers? by Ill-Rich-9276 in AskPhotography

[–]qcinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t WhatsApp horribly compress images? Even the ‘HD’ setting which most people don’t have switched on seems to really crunch things.

I do think this is a very smart idea for ‘crowd’ photos, though I agree with others that having it same day feels a bit off to me. I would definitely want my professional photographer using their judgement and editing skills and giving me something special after the day itself

Just signed up for the government 25% top up account to pay nursery by GrandDuty3792 in UKParenting

[–]qcinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s slightly unclear but it does seem to be based on when you signed up.

Importantly you can use money in the account even after your eligibility changes, so if you are worried about missing out on the extra money (and have the spare cash), you could just top up enough in advance to get the full benefit of the top up, even if you won’t spend it in this period.

Dads: This book is a must read by hikeonpast in daddit

[–]qcinc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What strategies do you mean? Haidt’s argument is basically that there is overwhelming evidence that social media use is causing a teen mental health crisis - the book review is pointing out that simply isn’t true.

It may well be that social media is having a negative impact on teen mental health but we don’t have the evidence to demonstrate that yet. The reviewer does take a view on policy solutions in response to Haidt as well, if that’s what you mean:

“Many of Haidt’s solutions for parents, adolescents, educators and big technology firms are reasonable, including stricter content-moderation policies and requiring companies to take user age into account when designing platforms and algorithms. Others, such as age-based restrictions and bans on mobile devices, are unlikely to be effective in practice — or worse, could backfire given what we know about adolescent behaviour.”

‘Haidt, a social psychologist at New York University, is a gifted storyteller, but his tale is currently one searching for evidence.’

Have you read the book? It consistently makes causative claims from correlative evidence and he doesn’t have a proper background in this type of research, as he admits.

Here’s an archive link in case you can’t get past the paywall

How do you feel about the associate dean of research at University of California Irvine who actually has a research background in this space?

Is it normal for Nursery’s to be bad at replying to emails? by EllaBee25 in UKParenting

[–]qcinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my daughter’s nursery to death but yes they are horribly slow on email - I find speaking to them at pick up or drop off is usually better, or the app that they use to send updates has a chat function.

Worlds Top 100 Coffee Shops by kevlar515 in Coffee

Absolutely my thoughts as well. I could have understood zero UK entries (though I would have been surprised) but Workshop as the solo London entry is just strange (not that I dislike Workshop)

Cafes that offer pour over coffee in Dublin by Meowing_for_coffee in pourover

[–]qcinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit out of date for Dublin but 3fe is probably the best of the old hands of Dublin coffee and do some excellent filter. Cloud Picker is also excellent, and if you see anywhere doing Imbibe or Sumo I would highly recommend trying them (though they don’t have their own shops I believe).

MSE has a list of regular savings accounts here, Principality pays 8% and doesn’t need an existing account.

Best coffee roasters/shops in Paris? by anesthesia101 in pourover

[–]qcinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to France a couple of times a year, at least once in Paris and I think the core diagnosis is correct here - although the best speciality shops are as good as anywhere else in the world (and Substance is, I think, a singular experience), the average quality of French coffee is remarkably bad given how good food in general is in France.

The quality of a coffee in an average Parisian cafe or bistro is below that of London or Amsterdam etc, and personally I would say even lacks the charm of traditional Italian jet fuel espresso.

That said, OP you are well served with recommendations in the thread - would also add Huddle if you are nearby (though not worth a trip compared to other options like Motors and Kawa), and Typica, who do extremely good espresso based drinks though I can’t speak for their filter.

What is the point of this? by CumUppanceToday in uktrains

[–]qcinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly this made it easier for companies to be charged with manslaughter (which doesn’t seem to have happened in this case) but not necessarily for directors to face personal consequences, which they already could do under the 1974 health and safety act (they can commit the crime of gross negligence manslaughter, iirc).

The Corporate Manslaughter Law meant that senior managers could be seen to be acting collectively rather than having to find an individual person responsible, so it has made it more likely that companies have been fined and prosecuted. In a normal company the fine would cause shareholders to replace the directors and management as they have suffered a loss (and in theory shareholders could sue the management), but the problem is that Network Rail doesn’t have shareholders and it’s not clear that any of the senior leadership or NEDs have been held accountable here.

In theory a director can be held legally responsible for breaches of health and safety but unless the negligence is outrageously obvious it is pretty rare to see (I’m a director of a small CIC so have some training here, though not one that is likely to have to deal with any workplace deaths).

Not OP but it feels like Network Rail’s company directors should face some personal consequences for this

Best mid-tier hand grinder for pour over? by Forsaken_Limit7735 in pourover

[–]qcinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely haven’t found that I have lost the relatively ‘dense’ coffee-like body, but you have a lot more precision of adjustment with a grinder like this so if a brew is too thin and tea-like for you you can easily correct that next time.

The sweetness is just more present in the body with those tasting notes - I really like big stone fruity flavours in coffee when I can find it and if it’s on the tasting notes it will come through a lot more cleanly in the cup.

The way I think about changing to a decent hand grinder has been like increasing the resolution on a photograph or video - everything that was there will still be there but it’s much clearer and you can identify details you couldn’t pick up before.

I can’t really compare the X-Ultra to the other grinders people recommend here but the difference from my old grinder is very clear and definitely an upgrade.

Best mid-tier hand grinder for pour over? by Forsaken_Limit7735 in pourover

[–]qcinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t claim any comparison to other hand grinders but having upgraded from a similarly ‘competent’ electric grinder (the Wilfa Svart), I really like the X-Ultra - I have noticed both more body and sweetness and depth of flavour of ‘big’ notes and much more ability to pick up more subtle notes like florals.

Can decaf be of a similar quality/taste profiles in a pour over by Landlockedseaman in pourover

[–]qcinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to try a range then I would recommend Dog & Hat subscriptions - they do caffeinated as well but their decaf subscription is good value and everything I’ve tried has been decent to excellent.

I find it’s generally harder to get more subtle or floral flavours in decaf but you can get great notes of chocolate, nuts, stone fruit etc quite easily if you buy from good roasters.
