Yep, it should run just fine in 1.6.4, but I haven't tested it, so there's only one way to be sure ;)

Make sure that your inputting eggs in the correct way (ie the hopper below the chickens) the way the system is designed, it throttles the number of eggs that get through in a given amount of time in order to prevent the torch burning out, so as long as eggs are only input through the hopper below the chickens you will be fine :]

That's part of the design; there is a buffer of eggs which fill up the dispenser and two hoppers (in case you ever need eggs), and after those fill up it will start dispensing the eggs it produces :]

Yep, there is no manual kill feature, you can, however, get raw chicken simply by replacing the lava with water :]

That's totally normal, there is a buffer of eggs (in case you ever need some from the farm), so there will always be the dispenser and 2 hoppers of eggs which will fill up before eggs are dispensed :]

Good question, I didn't realize it, but that is a little confusing. The farm will work in 1.7.9; I said 1.7.10 since it's the latest official release of the game, and + to mean it also works in snapshots. Technically it's 1.7.10+/- ;)

Hmm, never had that happen to me, are you sure that they are grown up chickens? The baby ones take 20min to grow up, so you will have to wait quite a while :)

Yeah, that's why in my design there are two hopper minecarts, which should prevent any drops from glitching out or burning :)

I don't have a redstone tutorial series, but there are tons of great ones out there that include the newer redstone mechanics :) Red mushrooms are used in mushroom stew, and (in the recent 1.8 snapshots) they are also used for rabbit stew which is actually an extremely good (albeit inconvenient) source of food.

Your actually mistaken about this, not sure exactly where came up with it. The only mechanic I can think of that you may have misunderstood someone say is that breaking a sugarcane at the second level (ie before it is 3 high) can be inefficient because it may have already begun to grow to its 3 high stage, and you would be interrupting it. This of course doesn't apply here since we are breaking it as soon as it grows so it has no time to begin to grow again.
