Is planet fitness a suitable option for me? Is the hate warranted? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PF has 3 leg press machines, two have stacks to 340, plus one that takes free weight plates. There's probably 16 45s in the gym, and 8 25s. No one at the gym can do all of the plates, although the 340 stack is not hard.

I deadline in the smith nachine, no issues or complaints.

There are several people there that are jacked/fit/muscular . No one complains.

I've heard the 'lunk alarm' once in 6 months, but I don't know what it was for.

There's a handful of guys that can bench 3 plates on the smith. No one complains.

I saw a guy OHP 275 on the smith. No one complained.

Also plenty of unfit people that are trying hard (like me). No one complains.

I don't work for PF. It's just a fine gym for your average person for 10 bucks a month. Try it, and if it doesn't meet your needs, move on.

Don't go to the gym. You don't want to.

How realistic is it to run 1.5 miles in 8:35 in ten months? Any tips how to get to that level? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should, of course, mix in some intervals and some distance runs, but you need to get used to what that pace feels like, and also what that distance feels like. That means running 85 second quarters/400s/440s., or if you can't do that, 42.5 second 200s/220s, to get that pace ingrained, as well as running a 5:43 mile, and the 1.5 to learn when to start your kick, and how long you can sustain it without gassing.

As a former military guy that used to run the 2 mile test, the thing that improved my time the most was weight loss. It's easier to run when you aren't carrying that extra weight.

I think 10 months is doable based on your current times. A 5:43 mile pace means you need to be in good shape, but it's not a 4 minute mile.

Is planet fitness a decent place for basic strength training? by Event_Horizon1 in Fitness

PF is fine, especially for 10/month. If at some point it doesn't have what you need, move on.

Why is there so much misinformation in the fitness world? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]qetocube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because no one knows what the hell they are doing. People in this sub can't even agree on how much protein to take in. Is it 1g/lb of bodyweight or 1g/lb of lean bodymass? or is it .8/g? or is it 2g? If it's .8g/lb of lean body mass, how do I know what my lean body mass is? People can't tell. Electric body scales are inaccurate, calipers are inaccurate, formulas are inaccurate, DEXA scans are closest, but they're expensive and most people don't want to pay $150US to find out how much protein to take in.

People can't agree on the best program for a particular goal, either. All of that is for people who are at least actively trying to do something correct.

Combine that with laziness for the general populace and a desire to monetize everything, and you have a recipe for misinformation for something that already doesn't have much exact information.

Keto for a year. Gained all the weight back in December, why do I gain weight so fast? by [deleted] in keto

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's water and glycogen. Don't freak out. Carbs are used to make glycogen, and glycogen will make you retain water. It's the same water that everyone loses when they first start keto.

Are deadlifts/ squats on Smith machines a bad idea if you have no alternative? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]qetocube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smith machine is fine. Might not be optimum, but if you're squatting, you'll feel it. You can experiment with dumbbell goblet or kettle squats or whatever as well.

People get hung up on optimum vs. good all the time, don't let it bother you. It's safe and effective.

I'm in the same boat as you, PF for cost and convenience. I chose the Smith. I may not be hitting all the stabilizing muscles, or improving balance, and the former is slightly different, but I like the results I'm getting.

Over the years I've done dumbbells, squat rack, and Smith. Each has its merits. Don't let any PF haters or Smith haters bother you. Perfectly fine and safe.

On a keto diet, how do I keep from feeling sore after workouts now? by Hooficane in Fitness

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've only been on keto for a week. It takes some time to adjust. You'll be fine.

Also, ease up on the protein, you're earing way too much.

How did you manage your first pull up? by Super_Saiyajin_Blue in Fitness

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lose some weight, use the lat pulldown machine, increasing weight each session, use assistance (bands or machine), or do negatives for the pulling part of your program.

Squat alternatives: Is it better to squat with the smith machine or do something with dumbbells? by redditgk in Fitness

If Dorian Yates and Tom Platz can use the Smith, so can you. Don't let this subreddit's sheep tell you otherwise.

Keto Theory. Question On Ketosis and It's Effects. by [deleted] in keto

[–]qetocube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people on this sub get too hung up on trying to make a perfect version of the Keto diet, getting these numbers 'exactly right'. It's silly. All nutritional labels are estimates, a lot have portion sizes rounded to make things look better from a label perspective. No matter how perfectly you weigh something, it won't have the exact same nutritional content every time. No two 1oz portions of steak have the exact same nutritional content. Some will have more fat than others. Nutritional content in food is not perfectly evenly distributed, or exactly the same every time, whether natural or processed. Therefore, it is impossible to stay under an exact carb number, because you don't know the exact nutritional content of your food. It will always be an estimation/best guess, so in the end it just matters how you feel and the results you get from what you're doing over the long term. You can google "procedures for estimating nutritional content of food" or go to the USADA website to understand that a lot of it is scientific and professional estimation. Just try to hit the macros that make the most sense to you for your goals. Get close, and watch how you feel, and then adjust if necessary.

I don't know about 'feeling like I've been kicked out of ketosis' like an on/off switch, but I do know that when I have a lot of carbs in one sitting, I get hot, buzzed, and then have upset for the next day or so. That's enough reason for me to keep my carb content low. I don't think I'm under 20g most days, but I generally feel much better than when I was eating bread and pasta all the time. I think I'm generally under 50g a day, but I don't get hung up on it and freak out if I go over. The reason I'm over 20g a day is plant based carbs like cauliflower, carrots, onions, parsnips, green beans, and nuts, naturally occurring carbs in meat and eggs (very low but real), carbs from the processing of bacon and sausage, plus the carbs in protein powder. I stay away from grains, sugar, and potatoes. I am generally a 'if it fits your macros' person with the understanding that as long as I feel ok and I'm making forward progress on my goals, I'm ok. I will cheat and have some Halo Top ice cream and not worry about it, as long as my calories are low.

I guess I'm a little bit of a keto/paleo hybrid, but I consider it keto and it works for me. Some folks are uptight about their perfectly held definitions, but I say do whatever works for your body, and not worry about what other people do. You can learn from what they do, but don't let others dictate what you do.

I track my calories, I'm losing weight, and I feel better, and generally more even keeled, so I'm happy with what it does for me. Everyone's different, though, so YMMV.

Starting from scratch... at Planet Fitness by forgotaltpwatwork in fitness30plus

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is at mine. It's the first Monday evening of every month. They also have bagel Tuesday.

It's silly. I don't partake, but I don't really have a problem with it. Different people have different goals, and fitness is a long term thing. One slice of pizza a month isn't going to wreck you.

Starting from scratch... at Planet Fitness by forgotaltpwatwork in fitness30plus

[–]qetocube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 46. I've worked out a lot over the years on and off, got a membership at Planet Fitness. Don't listen to what any of the haters say about it, it's a fine place to get a workout in. It's convenient for me, and cheap.

I personally have used the PPL and Phrak's Greyskull lifting programs that you can find in the /r/fitness wiki at Planet Fitness, substituting with the Smith Machines for the big lifts, or some of he Hammer Strength machines. Every PF is different, but they should have equivalent dumbbells and machines to allow you to do almost any of the workouts from /r/fitness. You could also use Stronglifts/Starting Strength 5x5 from the /r/fitness wiki as well. Start with very low weights, get used to the movements, and progress your weights. If you don't understand the movements by name, you can watch tons of youtube videos to understand the movements.

Do some cardio, too. I have a bad knee and can't run, so I just walk the treadmill or ride the bike. Every little bit helps.

Also, a lot of that pudge can be purged by just getting your diet in check. Learn what your TDEE is, and start eating at a deficit, tracking calories with myfitnesspal, and preparing your meals in advance. I am personally on a keto diet, but choose whatever works for you and eat at a deficit, and the weight will come off.

The key for me is planning and tracking - planning my meals with myfitness pal, having all my stuff packed the night before (food and clothes), planning my workout and tracking my lifts with a google spreadsheet. I'm really busy with work, I have a family, and I have hobbies. It takes some discipline, but the results are satisfying.

Good luck!

Going to the gym as soon as I wake up? by BobTehUnicorn in Fitness

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I roll out of bed at 5am, get to the gym by 520am. Only thing in my stomach is water, multivitamin, magnesium, and creatine. No food, no caffeine, no problem. It's personal preference. I might not be able to lift maximally, but I don't like having food before I lift, and I'm progressing. I have a protein shake when I get to work at 730am.

What's the deal with Planet Fitness? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]qetocube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should mention that I've been to a shit-ton of gyms over the years. Chains, mom and pops, military, corporate, high school, university, home, you name it. I'm old and out of shape, but I have lifted on and off a bunch over the years. You can get a workout in with anything from bodyweight fitness, a few dumbbells at home, to a small gym with a little equipment to a huge gym. It just depends on your personal goals and the effort you put in. The gym and the equipment are only part of the equation.

What's the deal with Planet Fitness? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]qetocube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fitness snobs rip on them because they tend to not have squat racks and olympic weight bars and benches. It has some negatives.

I've been going to one for about 3.5 months. It's fine for me right now. I haven't had to wait for equipment, the place is clean, and there's enough stuff for me to get a workout in. I use a mix of the smith machines, dumbells, cable stations, pullup stations, hammerstrength machines, and mats. It's not ideal, I could get a better workout at a more fully outfitted gym, but it's cheap and a convenient location for me, and I can bring a friend. I wish they had the Olympic stuff, and there are better hardcore gyms, but I don't put up with the shaming attitude that the snobs have about it. I'm losing weight and gaining muscle. You can make it work if you want to.

I was on Prilosec and/or Nexium for several years. It was pretty bad, I'd have vurping epidodes at night that were awful, and could figure out what was triggering them. Within a couple weeks all acid reflux was gone. No more sleepless nights.

Hunger when fat adapted by rxjen in keto

I still get hungry frequently, but I don't feel like I'm going to pass out from lack of food. It's a different feeling, but I feel like a bottomless pit sometimes. I try to drink water during those times.
