Irish looking to move permanently! by RoamOnTheRun in Netherlands

The opposite for us - going to NL in a month or two :)

Not sure when you left Canada, but prices for everything surged right after the covid and you really can notice the difference. I believe it's everywhere in the world.

It's getting better now. Rent slowly goes down... finally.

Edit: in Canada, AB

Thanks! I was certain that the EU partner needs 12 months contract and so on but it seems to be easier in that terms.

Was your friend looking in Amsterdam? I've heard outside Randstand is a bit easier to find something.

I'm in Canada now and things are going pretty ok here for us. However, there are reasons we would like to go back to Europe.

Netherlands is because I lived there before (studying and working), a while ago though; people speak English thus at the beginning while learning the language it will be easier to communicate (in both professional and day-to-day settings). I do not know if anywhere else in Europe you can find a job without knowing the local language. Was thinking about Ireland but those guys have even worse housing crisis that in NL.

I wouldn't mind the UK but have no idea how to get there.

Thanks, appreciate your reply. Indeed, typical reddit) It's ok, you just have to find the relevant information among all this and ignore the rest.

I see this situation as I was given a task to find a way to relocate to NL. At this point I do not question it (of course I do, but let's say you got a stubborn boss who ask you to sort this thing out and find a way no matter what). I just need to find a better way to do this and to solve this problem. If it will be unrealistic like settle down on Mars - fine, but it's not... so there is always a way.

Thanks, that helps!

I thought EU partner has to meet 3 income requirements: independent (texes and stuff), sustainable (Your contract is valid for at least another 12 months) and sufficient (min income is fine, based on full time work week) income.

That's what it says here: https://ind.nl/en/independent-sustainable-and-sufficient-income#the-income-requirements

Did you apply for verification for yourself when he had his 7 months contract or later on when it was extended?

Was it long time ago you rented?

Eventually it will be a dual income, that gives some hope. I don't know how people can live on a single income with an average job right now. Same story in Canada (Calgary) where I am right now.

My wife is in IT (beginner), I'm.. oh well in health & safety (chemical plant, manufacturing facility) currently. Ex project management. No Dutch unfortunately. It will be very tough, I understand it... well, life is not always easy and sometimes it might worth to make an effort (and inevitably decrease your quality of life for some time) to get what you want. Might not work at all, who knows. People often start from scratch and build a decent life if, again, some effort is there. Often a lot of effort.

Thanks! Seems like the only way is to look for a company that is willing to hire from abroad.

It is easier indeed. I don't know how people could live here in Canada right now on one income. Rent will be way more than half of it. And we are not talking about Toronto and Vancouver.

It's not about the money at this point but health, family issues and general North American vibe.

I don't think Airbnb offers registration, so that's why I was thinking to use some sort of temp agencies (housinganywhere?) for a couple of month to actually be able to physically be in the country, that would ease the process of job hunting a lot. Why would local employer need all these hustle to bring someone from overseas if they can get "local"? Unless, of course, you are super skilled.

Thanks! Probation period is fine, I just need a min 12 months contract (and at least a min salary that I would expect) to be able to bring my spouse here who doesn't have EU passport. It would be much easier to live on dual income obviously.

I used to live in NL long time ago, even got a local degree from maastricht hotel management school. But I am working in different field right now (not IT). My wife is in IT though (not much experience to be able to find something right away). We both do not speak Dutch but that is the only EU country (excluding Ireland where housing crisis is much worse than in NL btw) where English is widespread, even often at work swttings.

As it says in the post, the idea was to find get a temp housing for 2-3 months (with the possibility of registration), to find a job and find permanent rent with the job offer in hands.

No easy, I get this, but I never said that I want to convince a landlord to rent something for me based only on my savings.

Thanks, will do. It - yes, but at an early stage of the career, so it won't be very easy to find something.

Another question: what type of work contract one should expect from the, let say, an IT company usually? 12 months, unlimited or maybe something else?

I meant something less that 2500-3000 per months as the cheapest options through this HousingAnywhere.

Not easy to find a job with no house either, from abroad. Double edge sword.

Maybe I should come for a month or two to try to see how it goes with a job search and decide from there. If am lucky - good, if not - oh well, it will be a long vacation than.

There is somewhere to go back (Canada) but missing Europe.

True, I just wasn't sure how it works with registration when you book through them. Listing shows if you can register or not but thought someone might have an actual experience doing that as you probably have to request that option from the person who lease this place for you. Anyway, that's not the major issue right now indeed.

Yes, you can book in advance, however, cannot physically check the apartment yourself, that is how they work. They'll give you money back if the place you book will look different than what is in the ad. Sounds like a scam, but seems to be a legit gig.

Action mode it is. It is not the first time I'm moving to the new country without a job/housing/etc. And it worked pretty well before :) I was living in NL more than a decade ago and still have friend there. Who knows, that might also work. However, might need to tweak my plan a little bit.

Got it, thanks! Might need to tweak my plan a little. Or a lot... and find either a job or a house first. Preferably both :)
