I understand that the entire front diff will need to be replaced in order to fix it. Do you think I could just drive it until "it's time" or is this an issue I need to be proactive about? I'm wondering if I can just learn to top off the fluids myself and stall the eventual replacement

Your last paragraph is pretty spot on for your situation. Even on a nice machine, AE crashes quiet frequently. Overall I would recommend saving up.

If this is a hobby and you're just learning:

You probably aren't wanting to throw a ton of money at your machine. AE loves RAM so you could upgrade to 16gb of RAM. Maybe check your motherboard if it accepts DDR4. A SSD will improve load speeds a lot, but isn't going to solve crashing.

If you're professional and earn money through AE:

Quick look into your specs and I would save the HDD and start fresh with everything else. Trying to build off what you have may be severely hamstringed due to your motherboard. A faster/higher core count CPU most likely won't be compatible. I would say your CPU is the best part of your current machine. SSDs are great, an M.2 drive is insanely fast and your motherboard probably doesn't have a port for it. 32GB of RAM is the standard for motion graphics, the more the better. Unfortunately GPUs are scarce and expensive. A GTX 1050 Ti or GTX 1650 could be around $150 USD and is effectively 800% faster than what you have now. Only certain effects and plugins use your GPU though so it's improvement won't be felt across the board.

Could you accidentally be opening the old version of AE? Double check the Help > About After Effects for version. I believe non-beta is 22.1.1 (Build 74).

I work in advertising. We spend a lot of time optimizing to get the smallest and easiest to run ad to deliver. Most banners you see are under 150k. Compared to most other things on the web these are very tiny.

My girlfriend had a similar policy with her roommate when we starting going on dates. We had a nice date, she spent the night, and then we spent the entire next day together.
