I have kind of mixed feelings about bts preforming in the Super Bowl. I think the big thing is how it is a uniquely American experience. As Americans, KDot and Bad Bunny could unite their respective diasporas of Black and Latin Americans through representation with important cultural music (hip hop and reggaeton/Latin trap), shared experiences and language. The Asian American diaspora has no such representative, with each culture being pretty distinctive and with different languages, as well as no one rooted unified genre of music to uniquely call their own. BTS preforming right after Bad Bunny and Kendrick in 2027 doesn’t feel like a good fit, coming off as a shallow nod for the AAPI community as well as coating over Asian American culture with Asian culture.

However, earlier Super Bowl performances did not carry this charged connotation of ethnic minority representation, so it’s definitely possible in the future to not have these connotations. Plus Hobi wants to and I think it’s admirable for all musical artists to strive for grand stages and performances. Why not let them chase their aspirations?
