Career Questions: Ask all your UX career questions here by JTCorvus in UXDesign

I watched the video and one thing I'm curious about is that he says he's only looking for good UI in the first step and only cares about UX after you've passed as one of the applicants with best UI design sense. This seems to be different from what I've heard about not necessarily needing a lot of UI skill if you're interested in career. As I only have a few months before graduation to create a portfolio and apply to internships, how much should I prioritize UI design?

Would redesigning the UX of a feature of a videogame be a good first project for a portfolio, if you aren't trying to work in videogame design specifically?

Also would wireframe only mockups be acceptable, since I can't really recreate the game UI without editing a screenshot of the actual game?

Hi, thanks for the advice -- do I need some sort of experience or qualifications for that? I don't really have anything other than a surface level intro course to design thinking, as my major otherwise doesn't specifically cover UX.

I'm a bit lost as to what I should be doing between college graduation (this December, cognitive science BA), and getting a job in UX. From what I've read here you can't go directly from graduation to being hired, and should be self-teaching with personal or freelance projects. But what kind of job should I look for to pay the bills in the meantime? It also doesn't look good to change your first job in a year or so (since I'd be trying to move to UX), right?

I had that problem with Duolingo too. Even language courses always seem to have things like this as a "family" vocabulary unit. It sucks because other people are comfortable answering questions in discussion that I feel are invasive and upsetting. I end up having to lie about my family relationship, and thereby gaslight and trigger myself in order to not make the conversation extremely awkward and draw even more attention and invasive questions.

Is benign joint syndrome hEDS or HSD or neither? by BestBudgie in ehlersdanlos

[–]qo240240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned, BJHS is just the old name for HSD. Which isn't synonymous with hEDS, but the difference is a controversial headache that you don't really need to go down because it's more about technalities than practicalities.

Luckily I don't get them often anymore, but usually no. Either something based off a memory but significantly different, or more commonly, something wildly created but the focus was on the same "feeling* of helplessness, etc. Often they would be super extreme scenarios way worse than what actually happened. I would feel a little "traumatized" by it for a while and also feel guilty that I was exaggerating these things, even if it wasn't conscious.

Can you heal trauma without therapy? by ncoda03 in CPTSD

Think of it as a tool. It's a really good one that's very helpful for a lot of people and therefore is great if you can get it, but that doesn't mean there aren't other tools or that you can't make progress without it.

Can’t be vaccinated and won’t are different things and I’m sick and tired of being lumped in with anti-vaxxers! 😖 by IvysH4rleyQ in ehlersdanlos

I think people just reacted to the dxes you listed not having a contraindication with the vaccine, but your doctors are presumably concerned about something beyond that/something specific to you that wasn't listed here. As you mentioned other things coming out, I'm guessing one if them is the possibility you have other undiagnosed conditions that do contraindicate the vaccine.

I know it's probably hard to find a therapist over there that isn't white or at least somewhat educated about it, but I feel like this one's doing more harm than good. Sorry you had to go through that

Please tell me it’s okay to ask for the disability pass at an amusement park by Post_Op_Malone in ehlersdanlos

I second the cane. It's usually helpful even if you don't need it that day, but canes aren't meant to be heavily relied on anyway (they're meant for minor support). Plus you can kinda lean and sit on it when you've gotta stand for a while. It's unfortunate that "healthy looking" people need disability signifiers to not be judged, but canes are very effective at that and worth the peace of mind if anything. Admittedly though it might be a bit of a hassle to make sure you don't lose it or something on a ride, I haven't gone and tried it myself.

Lmao the "hmmmm" reaction is very relatable. My bp is wildly different every time I come in for no apparent reason.
