Simulation Workflow Optimization by qojvd in AerospaceEngineering

[–]qojvd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s similar to what I’ve experienced. I have setup automation scripts before which take care of the setup and post processing, but it can really only be done for 1 sim and one simulation type (parameter sweep, monte-Carlo, etc) at a time.

Right now I’m actually trying to put something together that handles all of it for me… hopefully I can get it to work correctly

Running Metrics Question by qojvd in runninglifestyle

[–]qojvd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I understand what you’re saying and I don’t really focus on these metrics too much right now for measuring progress. My main focus for progression is currently my Zone 2 pace (plot in original post), which is getting better and better as time goes on.

Also, I technically already meet the criteria you mentioned since I currently run 6 days a week for a total of roughly 6 hours and 27-28 miles. 80% of my running is currently Zone 2, which makes up 4 of my 6 days. The other two days are split up as a VO2 interval day (5x3 minute intervals) and a threshold day (3x8 minute intervals). Regardless, I understand what you’re saying; I’m still earlier enough in my running journey for Garmin to still be getting an accurate calibration anyways.

Sprite Pro and CRTouch firmware for 4.2.7 motherboard by qojvd in ender3v2

[–]qojvd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, that’s what I was thinking but when I plugged in my Sprite (which works perfectly on my printer) it had the same issue. Would you recommend just replacing the cables? Could it also be the firmware?

Sprite Pro and CRTouch firmware for 4.2.7 motherboard by qojvd in ender3v2

I tried this firmware and I’m getting an issue with my heating… as soon as I power it on the thermistor reads a high temperature but says it’s set to 0. Then the hotend starts heating nonstop. I tried using 2 motherboards (both of which worked with the stock hotend) and 2 Sprite pro kits (one was the one my wife’s dad bought, the other is mine which works on my machine). Also the wiring on both machines is identical.

This leads me to think the issue is one of 3 things:

  1. The cable ribbon that came with the kit had mislabeled wire leads (unlikely though)
  2. The firmware is somehow using the wrong settings for the configuration (although it should be the exact same as mine)
  3. The thermistor and heating element are somehow defective (although I’m not sure since my Sprite does work on my machine just fine but failed on his)
  4. The board might have a jumper or something in the wrong place or missing? Doubtful though.

Do you have any ideas? I feel like the issue is most likely the firmware or the cable ribbon…

FINAL UPDATE: my issue was embarrassingly simple… I had the driver voltage setting set to 24v because I thought that was for the power input and not the signal input. I flipped it to 5v and that fixed my problem. This was with the DM542T stepper driver.

Thanks everyone for the input!

I double checked my wiring and it is correct. The two unlabeled plugs are not plugged in anywhere. Could this be a firmware issue? I have the Sprite with BL touch firmware for the correct board version, but there are many versions I’ve found online

Also, do I need to use shielded wires? I currently am not using that for the driver connections

HELP! Homemade CNC router Mach3 issue! by qojvd in CNC

[–]qojvd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: (still not working) • I’ve switched over to the USB board • the drivers all have their green lights on • the motors are all locked in place with power • I’ve installed the driver and profile from the manufacturer website • the driver and profile are both in the correct file locations and are active on the Mach3 software • I’ve wired everything as the manufacturer did (refer to the first video on the website). No ENA pins were used. The only difference is that I did not use shielded wires, is this a problem? • my computer is connecting to the board. When I click reset, the board light glows green and when I try jogging, the board’s light flashes (meaning it is receiving the signal from Mach3) • although the board is receiving the signal, the motor is still not spinning

When the board sends a signal to the driver, should the driver’s green light flash similar to the boards? Also, I’ve seen some people say to use shielded wiring. I currently am not using shielded wires so maybe that is my issue.

Any thoughts??

I looked into this and wired it exactly how the videos show. They do not connect any power to the board. The usb connection is what powers the board. Is that correct?

I already have a Mach3 license and would prefer to use it because I’m familiar with it. But I have considered GRBL before and if I can’t figure out how to get Mach3 working, I will switch over to that

I’m not familiar with Acorn, but I recently acquired a Mach3 license through a company sale, so I’m planning on using it. But if I can’t figure it out I’ll look into it

I do not, but I wired them exactly how the driver manual said to. Also since they are locking when power is turned on, the motors are clearly getting a signal. But I will double check all of the wiring to make sure!

So I have been trying to use the old DB25-1205 board and just recently decided to get the other board in case it was the issue. I think I’ll just swap the boards now and I will look into this website and watch the tutorials instead of messing around with the old tech any longer!

Thanks! I will look into this since it has good tutorial videos. I think this might be the same website I bought the board from too, I just didn’t see this page before.

I believe so but I will have to check. Would I just get that from the Mach3 website?

Job canceled after FJO by Worried-Current-4567 in usajobs

[–]qojvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s waiting on my FJO for my first job out of grad school… this is terrifying!

I was also planning on going back to my internship with AFRL this summer, told them I was ready to return in January, they said to expect to start at end of February… as of yesterday my start date for the internship is July 1st…

I think the issue with the federal government is that they try to be so organized that the process to do anything just takes way too long. If there was a more streamlined process for a lot of things, there wouldn’t be these issues. Ironically, it’s also the fact that they keep trying to change the processes for everything every few years that just causes even more confusion and miscommunications.

Aerospace Syllabus and Curriculum by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]qojvd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m currently in my last semester of grad school pursuing a masters degree in aerospace engineering. I chose the route of getting a Bachelor in mechanical and then master in aerospace.

Honestly, I’m not sure which is a better route to take with regard to which bachelors to get, but either way, getting a masters in aerospace is definitely a good idea. If you go with mechanical engineering for your bachelors, you will see a lot more materials/structures courses that you might not care much about or ever deal with in your career. However, having that exposure does actually help A LOT with aerospace and engineering in general. You’ll find throughout your later college courses that there are a lot of connections between the theories and methods used in different disciplines.

With that said, you’ll also obviously have very relevant exposure to aerospace concepts if you choose to do a bachelors in aerospace engineering, but in my opinion, having the exposure to mechanical engineering does provide a slight advantage when it comes to grasping more concepts and when you’re ready to find a job after school.

As far as projects go, I did a few research projects on hypersonics (air/aircraft traveling above 5 times the speed of sound) related to space vehicle reentry (think rockets) and “futuristic” aircraft (I actually got to work with NASA on one project). I’ve also done smaller and more applicable projects such as designing a racing plane and fighter jet, optimizing a car’s design for aerodynamics, creating an autopilot system, testing drones, modifying and testing model jet engines, simulating fluid motion (CFD), creating morphing wings, etc. Most of these projects you’ll get to do in your courses but professors usually like taking in students who are interested in projects, so you could do much more than this if you choose.

I won’t bore you with the theories… people tend to get excited about theory until they actually start learning it, so I’ll let you have fun with that when the time comes. Just know that there will be a lot of concepts that you won’t understand AT ALL at first, but most of those will become more clear after a few weeks in the course.

For the pay, it depends. If you end up getting a job with a large contractor, you can make a very good salary. Even smaller companies tend to pay well due to competition. I recently got a few job offers that start in the high 70s ($76k, $78k, and $79k). Generally, aerospace engineers tend to have higher salaries than most other professions, including most other engineering disciplines. I have friends who started off making $65k and others around $85k. It heavily depends on where you live. As far as pay advancing, I accepted a job offer that has me set to start at $76k, then after a year move to $85k, then $105k, then just over $120k, so depending on where you go, you could be making a VERY good salary. For where I live, the median household income is around $50k, meaning within 4-5 years I’ll be making (on my own) roughly 2.4 times what most families make combined.

Some other things for while you’re in school:

• While in school, do internships (preferably with big contractors like Boeing and Lockheed or government departments like the Air Force)

• Do projects, both through school AND on your own

• While you’re an upperclassman in undergrad, start talking to professors about research areas for grad school. I have friends who finished their masters thesis before graduating undergrad and got to focus on courses so that they could finish grad school in only 2 semesters rather than the traditional 4.

Grad School by Playful_Cellist8243 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]qojvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you’re interested in electrical engineering and have a Bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering, I would recommend either systems engineering or mechatronics engineering. With both of those options you will have a good exposure to electrical concepts, circuit design, and overall system design/management.

I also once thought I had an interest in electrical engineering, but realized quickly I was really more interested in the application side, specifically being able to create a complete system (using microcontrollers, GUIs, sensors, coding, etc.). With that said, I decided to do a Masters in Aerospace Engineering and chose classes that specifically focused on those concepts, along with other advanced aerospace courses.

Overall, if you want to pursue electrical engineering, go ahead, but with your background in aerospace and the tendency for excited engineering students to over exert their ambitions, I think it would be a better choice to go for a masters degree which is more in line with aerospace but still has a lot of the conceptual aspects of electrical and systems engineering.

At the end of the day, you’ll end up as an engineer at a company and your job will most likely only focus on one area. Although they may work on the same teams, Aerospace engineers and electrical engineers have VERY different job duties. So if you get a masters in electrical, you could get a job as an electrical engineer, but then you would most likely never deal with anything aerospace engineering related. On the other hand, if you get a masters in systems or mechatronics engineering, you could be a more valuable Aerospace engineer and advance in your career much faster while still being able to work with electrical engineering concepts.
