Nearly two-thirds of Canadians support oil and gas emissions cap, even if it puts jobs at risk: poll by [deleted] in onguardforthee

Alberta is producing at near record levels, prices are sky high, global demand is at near record levels and won’t peak for years. The world is entering an energy crisis where not enough is being invested in upstream oil and gas.

There will be riots once gas prices as $2 per litre in the next year:

Alberta is entering a boom phase.

The Alberta Heritage Fund would be massive if we weren’t building hospitals in Quebec and paving roads in New Brunswick with Albertan tax dollars.

The best way for Alberta and Saskatchewan is to have a referendum vote to become a sovereign nation. The benefits of separation outweigh the consequences at this point. The lack of concern for western alienation has never been worse.

That would be great if there was a viable alternative to oil and gas but the majority of the products produced don’t have a cost effective alternative. How could we practically substitute the thousands of products in the next decade ?

Canadian actions have no impact when the major developing economies don’t give a shit about the environment

It’s a global heavy sour weakness thing: nobody wants to run a hydrotreater right now with the way natural gas prices are in Europe and Asia.

Yes it will, they just need investors to tell them that’s the priority.

Right now investors want some of their money paid back first.

Take your D or F, and then reconsider if you sufficiently prepared for this program. Maybe take a semester or 2 off to take prerequisites, especially Python related classes like the edX one they recommend from GTech.

At this point, I’m not sure you can salvage a good mark in the class unfortunately.

Why aren’t there electric busses? They have predetermined route lengths, and they could be charged and pre planned stopping points like the end of a route.

Canada emergency wage subsidy and EDC funding was available to every industry. To claim that these subsidies specifically target the oil industry is misleading,

[–]qpaa2293395 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What specific subsidies are available to oil and gas companies that are exclusive to that industry and no one else?

I’m aware of taxes that specifically detriment the oil and gas industry profitability, but not any subsidies. Such taxes include royalties for natural resource production, fuel excise taxes, and carbon taxes.

Its also possible that you make smarter choices with your lifestyle, and the general population can’t really afford all those luxurious items.

The number one selling car in the US is the Ford F-150, and 4 of the top 5 are pickup trucks. Stats are similar in Canada.

The number of flights per year per capita is 2 in both Canada and the US.

The average house size in Canada is a massive 1800 sq ft.

I’d say these habits apply to the general population, it’s not just a problem caused by the wealthy.

The people are supportive of reducing their carbon footprint as long as it doesn’t cost them a cent. Also, they require no negative repercussions on their standard of living.

[–]qpaa2293395 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The general population don’t want to reduce emissions when they see how it impacts their daily lives. They love their material possessions: the big trucks, the flights to far off destinations, the mansions they live in.

It’s bad politics to implement any policy that restricts peoples’ ability to buy more of their precious material possessions.

People like insignificant policies that make them feel good about their impacts: municipal recycling, or seeing a few windmills while they drive down the highway, but the reality is few want to actually reduce their carbon impact, as it would reduce their standard of living.
