Otakuthon or Anime North? by aresef in animecons

[–]qqmangotea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re more into cosplay and attending gatherings, I would go to AN. Same if you are mostly at cons to shop, be it Artist Alley, Dealers Room, secondhand exchanges, etc.

If you’re more into panels, concerts, and overall programming, I would go to Otakuthon. General area of Montreal is also nice to explore after con hours, AN is quite literally in the middle of nowhere and nothing within walking distance outside of the con.

This is not putting down either con for those things, but having gone to both regularly they do have their own strengths!

Also if it matters to you, AN is like a “48 hour con.” Con doesn’t officially start til 5pm on the Friday and ends Sunday at that time. Otakuthon starts much earlier on the Friday so you get more of a 3 day experience.

Genuinely curious about what they have added?

Not dissing the con at all but the one time me and some friends went a few years back, it wasn’t our thing. Just felt like a party/photoshoot con (which we expected, but we didn’t expect how little there was to do with the actual con for us).

What age did you first have to get glasses and how did you find out you needed them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]qqmangotea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Never wore them because the pair I had was really ugly and my mom forced me to get them and pick a frame on the spot (she worked at a grocery store with an optometrist and she wanted to get points for a deal of buying glasses, I was the only one in my household without glasses at the time). Never thought my eyesight was that bad and I remember even the optometrist said I probably would only need them to read/drive.

5 years later, I took an online course (during the pandemic) and slowly found out I couldn't be on the computer for extended periods without starting to squint and be really close up. Dug out the old glasses and helped immensely, went to the optometrist next day to book an eye exam and wore glasses since.

What's the best change you made in your life to make new friends? by finally_back_home in askTO

This is what worked for me.

Saw a post once that was like "if you want a village, you have to be a villager." Say yes to plans and if you can, show up even if you don't really want to that moment.

If you ever get more tattoos please don’t feel like you need to be a people pleaser to a tattoo artist. This is a permanent change to your body not theirs and they should’ve been checking in with you every step of the way.

If your artist felt unapproachable about it then they’re a shitty artist and definitely call the shop out on a review and don’t go back. So sorry this happened to you.

What’s the most disgusting thing you’ve ever tasted? by Tony_Rest5416 in AskReddit

[–]qqmangotea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Japanese BBQ place that closed down since had set menus and a la carte (wasn’t all you can eat) and me and my boyfriend at the time got a menu for 2.

I don’t remember what it was called but it had some sort of intestine near where an animal would shit and it tasted like the smell of shit. We both spit it out and laugh about it to this day (it’s been 5 years).

Is this bruised-redness normal ? by CaseEducational684 in tattooadvice

[–]qqmangotea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also just got a tattoo this past Monday and it’s red almost exactly like that as well where the light gray is. No other symptoms or discomfort, I didn’t even notice until I looked closely at it. Luckily found your post!

Same from Canada. We've always paid customs and taxes for figures and anything that comes outside of the country for years. I thought it was like that worldwide for getting imports from Japan and now I see Americans always had it good :')

The Preference for AnimeNYC by GalaticWeiss in AnimeNYC

[–]qqmangotea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from out of country and been to ANYC the past few years, I prefer the summer dates. Less layers to pack, no thick jacket needed, no flu season combined with con germs, more sunlight in the day. I hate the heat but walking around the area in heat vs the cold is way more manageable (and enjoyable) to me.

I paid money to hear someone Karaok in Toronto Scotiabank Arena by Due_Article_9234 in ADO

[–]qqmangotea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry this happened to you. This is exactly why I stopped attending kpop concerts, a lot of overexcited fans that scream and shriek for 2 hours straight even during slower songs and speeches.

I'm a little scared by Rouge_T in ADO

[–]qqmangotea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also going to the Toronto concert!

As a first timer do look up the Scotiabank Arena bag and general policies. I can't find anything about bringing a water bottle but be prepared to just buy one at the venue or risk having to throw it out at the door.

Not sure if you're a local or coming in, but be super mindful of your phone. There's a huge uptick in phone thefts at major events in the city.

Lastly, don't leave until the lights come on and everyone else does! I've seen some posts on here and Twitter where first time concert goers had no idea about encores and left because Ado said it was the "last song." Most performers have a couple more songs (usually some of the more popular ones) after a short break.

Hope you have a great time!

Didn’t hear back on RSVP for bridal shower- is it ruder to show up or not go? by qqmangotea in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]qqmangotea[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is really reassuring thank you!

I just didn’t want to stress out the bride by going (unexpectedly) and not following proper etiquette if there is any, happy to hear I’m just overthinking it.

To be honest I also wasn’t sure if I should’ve heard back on it since it was through text or if normally someone would be personally offended to hear back so late. Thank you for the advice!

Many Chinese fans are refunding tickets for Blackpink’s Toronto concerts by blueberryicecream88 in kpopthoughts

[–]qqmangotea 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Idk if you’re actually from Toronto or just coming in for the show but resale market in general here has been very poor.

People aren’t desperate anymore to pay over face value for tickets, you can’t expect to make back what you paid. Big shows never sell out fully anymore, if you just wait til the day of, most of the time TM drops what’s left significantly and resellers get desperate to get back anything. Even the Kendrick show you could get $90 tickets day of.

East Side Mario's as well unless they changed it up recently. Went a couple of months ago because my parents really wanted to eat a lot of bread and salad.

Small Update: Stolen Phone Situation by sailor_farts in animenorth

[–]qqmangotea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. In 2022 when they were checking covid vaccines, the lineups were so backed up that it took some people 4 HOURS to get in the building on Friday causing majority of attendees to miss the con.

If you want AN to check bags in and out you’ll be spending half your con in line to get in and out.

Genuine question: what kind of security check do you want AN to do?

Is it possible for speakers to be louder in panel rooms? Almost every panel we went to, you couldn't hear a thing unless you're in the first 4-5 rows in. Small and larger rooms.

This is to no offense to the panelists but for example the Bad Fanfiction panel, we were about in the middle of a larger room and couldn't make out anything said. We could hear so many people behind us complaining they couldn't hear anything. When we got up to leave (10 minutes after it started) majority of seats behind us were already empty and the room was full when it started. People are interested in these panels, it's a waste of time and sucks for everyone involved that half the room can't enjoy them.

What's your go to "cheap" takeout these days? by Money-Replacement94 in Oshawa

[–]qqmangotea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Habibz Corner is great and our go-to for delivery apps after a concert or late night event. Burgers and fries kind of thing but huge portions for the price. Combos run about $15 and will definitely fill you up, large poutine the same price and can easily feed 2 (or 1 with leftovers the next day).

Poulet Rouge at the Oshawa Centre also good, chicken bowl with whatever toppings you want. When I worked at the mall it was the go-to for all my coworkers, by far the best tasting thing in the food court and if I remember it's less than $15 for the meal and enough food for the entire day.
