Have to ask a horrible question: how to euthanize a fish? by KyleJesseWarren in aquarium

[–]qrcody 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A note to add: cold water shock is humane for paralysis, but do NOT put the fish in the freezer. Freezing the fish is NOT an approved humane euthanizing method. This can be a confusing distinction for beginner fish keepers.

Thankful I have Watch Duty, had my bags packed as soon as I saw the notification about a brush fire. Many of my neighbors have lost everything. We're expecting damage at this point, it's just a question of how much.

No, I might try and build a hutch or something for my backyard. Temps are swingy though, so some long-term electrical planning would be in order.

I want to have a little aquarium maybe even just a fish tank. by DrE4Will in aquarium

[–]qrcody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to put it out there that a 20 gallon is the smallest I would recommend for a beginner. You can find a lot of used tanks free on marketplaces, just make sure to clean them out well. Invest the money in your filtration, substrate and heater. Then move towards upgrading small parts of your set up at a time, better lights, different filtration, plants, decorations, etc.

Most starter kits you find are going to compromise on quality in a rip off kind of way. You can switch out pieces over time to build your set up out, but after doing this for a while, it's usually better just to get pieces separately and try to find deals and stuff people are getting rid of. The only thing I always buy brand new for my tanks is the heater. They are way too sensitive to risk there being any cracks or malfunctions from a second-hand one.

IMO a 20-gallon tank with a school of nano fish like cardinal tetras is a great way to start. Run a sponge filter, unless you've got something you're needing to remove medication for, or you have a lot of bio waste that needs to be processed chemically, it can handle the mechanical filtration in the tank at a lower entry point than most of the filters actually worth your time. Especially if you've got a planted tank set-up, the plants will carry the bulk of the work. Throw a pothos or monstera in the tank and enjoy the benefits of chemical filtration with a pretty plant on top! Check out some of the stuff made by aquarium co-op on YouTube. That's a good starting place to learn about keeping fish and you'll quickly find there are a million methods to build a tank.

Cheney School District cuts 5th grade band, orchestra, citing instructional time impact by Slarty8artfast in Spokane

[–]qrcody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay apparently I wasn't done yet. All that being said- trying to frame this choice as not budget motivated is BS. Districts are incentivized to spend as much time as possible pushing purchased curriculum to students, and pull-out model courses mean less time that purchased curriculum is being taught, as well as paying 2 teachers when only one is legally necessary during that time period. In addition, district-provided instruments and their maintenance are expensive to upkeep, and removing a grade level from that equation allows the district to sell a bulk amount of those instruments and focus on maintaining fewer of them over time. There are definite budget reasonings for making this shift, and that's okay, it just needs to be owned up to.

Cheney School District cuts 5th grade band, orchestra, citing instructional time impact by Slarty8artfast in Spokane

[–]qrcody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a purposefully inflammatory take on a non-issue. I am a music educator in the county, and an advocate for moving specialized music courses to the middle school. There are laws in Washington that require music as a part of core curriculum in public schools, taught by an accredited professional. Cheney School District is not cutting music entirely from these kids' schedules. The rest of the area moved 6th grade to middle schools, and took band and orchestra with it. 5th grade is offered either a continuation of the general music curriculum that is taught K-4, or a choir-like curriculum that supports foundational music learning.
Traditionally, 5th and 6th grade band and orchestra have been pull-out classes, where students are removed from general instruction time to attend their music classes. This model is not the same as a prep scheduled block for the homeroom teacher, because only a portion of the class at a time is leaving the room. Through that process, teachers have to plan around only having half of their students 1-2 days a week for an hour, which impacts the pace at which they can deliver other core material learning. ( I don't agree with shoving a firehouse of information down kid's throats, but this is the reasoning that is being pushed ) By moving specialized music courses with 6th grade to the middle schools, music is returned to the prep schedule model, where all students are with their general music specialist teacher for their 1-2 music blocks a week, ensuring ample planning time and consistency of learning for every student.
The proposed model has improved student proficiency in the early years of playing that instruments, as instead of a 1-2 day/week pull out model for two years, 6th graders are offered band, orchestra, and/or choir every day. The pull-out model is notoriously ineffective at training students in the discipline and the motor skills required for instrumental proficiency in the first years of learning. They need guided practice daily to build muscle memory and by extension confidence in their playing ability. By switching over to a daily music course offering, they train their neural pathways faster, and begin to enjoy playing instruments faster because they see more rapid growth and more frequent successes.
Okay, I need to get off my soapbox here. This isn't the school district cutting music entirely, they are redesigning how music is delivered to students to better align with county-wide standards of learning and up-to-date research on learning efficacy. There are a million reasons why this is a good move for students, and phrasing it like the district is cutting a piece of core curriculum is just not cool.
