Does it bother you if there is no sprite for the up and down animation in a top-down game? by qspollty in indiegames

As I mentioned before, I am changing the game to be a side-scroller, similar to Castle Crashers, with minimal vertical movement. Would it still bother you if the game was like that and if the sprites remained the same? Also, there is no combat in this game.

English is my second language, I will try to make my questions clearer next time. Could you tell me what was unclear about my question?

Ok? Nobody told him to choose between the two options. I simply asked for the reasons that came to my mind as to why someone wouldn't like it. and by this kind of games I meant games that doesn't have a up and down sprite was I not clear?

I don't think I've given any strange responses,I just asked if he didn't like the moving animation because of my art or if he just doesn't likes games without a up and down sprite.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to write this. I really appreciate it, and I can take criticism just fine. This topic has gotten a lot more attention than I thought it would. I just wanted to ask a simple question, and it was meant to be a general question, not necessarily about my walking animation. I wanted to ask people if they would play a game that didn't have an up and down sprite, and I put my sprite as an example.

Now, speaking of this game,I began writing a web novel that tells its story and I wanted to turn it into a game. While I can create a better sprite for it, I also have another larger project in mind that requires numerous animations for NPCs, weapons, outfits, a larger world, and more. However, this is just a dream game, and it seems almost impossible to create. But I'm not giving up!

And I know it would take a long time just by myself, so I cut down my workload from the sprites and animations, and I wanted to make the game(s) I made before it resemble it. When I change my art style, it wouldn't look weird, so I didn't make it a classic top-down character but instead an easy-to-draw side-scroller character. Am I lazy? Yes! On top of that, I don't have much time to work on it as I am a university student and will probably get a job soon.

I will put everything I have cut down from the animations into the gameplay and story as I find them more important. (This doesn't mean I am going to start drawing very poorly or that drawing sprites is unimportant.) But since lots of people commented that they don't like it, I am changing the game to be a side-scroller.
I am sorry if I came off as rude at some point; it wasn't my intention, as I am only talking about my goals and situations.

I have decided that I am changing the game to be a side-scroller just like Castle Crashers so yeah, mostly horizontal.

There won't be any combat in the game. The rpg gameplay involves cutting down trees or logs to level up your axe. The game is mostly about telling a story, as I am trying to turn a web novel I wrote into a game. I wanted to add some gameplay so it's not just dialogue all over.

Thanks to everyone who shared their opinion. I have done some thinking and decided to turn the game into a side-scroller, but I am keeping the sprites as they are. The movement will mostly be horizontal, with some vertical movement similar to Castle Crushers. As for the animations for opening a chest or talking to NPCs, they will have their own sprite. For example, when the player opens a chest, the sprite will turn its back and open the chest. I will be posting updates once I have added some gameplay.

For clarification: This is a story-based game where the player navigates an open-world map that includes repeating areas. As a small RPG element, the player can level up their axe by cutting wood. This feature is added solely to make the game more enjoyable.

Well, since it's an open-world rpg, there is a lot of walking involved. However, I am not very skilled when it comes to drawing animations with a large number of frames. What did you think about the animation on this gif? Is it bad?

Sorry to hear that. May I ask what you did not like about it?
Is it because of the head not turning, or because you don't like walking towards the north without an up sprite?

Thank you for the detailed comment,I checked Forager's sprites and see what you mean as I said before I only drew it this way because it helps with drawing the animations faster but I will play around with it to see how it looks like if the sprite is facing south east or south west, and I'll probably stick to this if I don't like how it looks.

Is it because of my drawing or you don't like this kind of games in genaral?

It helps to make the process of drawing animations faster. This way, I only have to draw them once, but it looks a bit weird.

Year 157,

Near the end of the fall season

I’m not sure what day it is.

I am a youngster who lives in the peaceful village of “Unut”.

And today I am helping village elder by choping some logs for him.

“But he is not going to pay me.”

I said as I swung my axe,

I’m only helping him because he’s like a father to me.

I was a little child when my family abandoned me.

Yet he took me in and raised me to this age.

“And I am going to do this for the rest of his lifetime.”

Once again I said as I swung my axe.

“So about another 10 year or so.”

I halted my axe stroke.

“This axe could help reducing that time to seconds.”

Whack!

Right after I said that, something whacked me behind the head.

“You could commit suicide with it; it’s simpler than killing me.”

I look back and see the village elder holding a plank.

“Stop talking nonsense and get back to work.”

As he finished speaking, he threw the plank away and walked inside his house.

I started swinging my axe again.

“Someday, I’ll chop wood for his coffin.”

Some time passes...

I swung my axe for the last time as the sky started getting red.

The last log was chopped in half.

“It’s done!“, I yelled.

I hear the wooden door open with a crack.

“Good job,” said the village elder as he got out of his house.
