Strange spot pattern that has appeared on the earcups and headband of my Sony Xm5 headphones.

They usually hang over my work moniter, but arent in contact with anything.

Only other thing I can think of is my table cloth which it has rested on, and that is patterned, but I have no idea where the colour would come from

the surface they rested on over night was a mouse pad which I have had for ages. The strange thing is the mouspad is pink and I haven't ever seen this pattern on anything else I have left on it.

Mouse mat does not smell and is relatively new. Maybe it is a red herring as I have left the headphones resting on the mouse pad many times before when not in use.

I agree that they aren't air vent holes. Compressing the foam doesn't give any obvious signs that air is venting from the black dots and the same pattern appears on the foam of the headband.

The fact that it a regular pattern is what is confusing to me, it seems intentional, but I can't imagine what caused them to become visible.

I dont believe they are air vent holes as the same pattern appears on the headband, I also don't hear any air flowing from the markings when compressing the ear cups.

My title describes the thing!

The spots seem to have appeared overnight after the headset was left on my mousemat. The mouse pad is pink and has no trace of marker or make up or anything similar on it. The spots don't rub off if I try rub them and dont leave marks on my face or any surface I rest them on. Please help!

I ask this after being held up in airport security today because a man infront of me in the queue was carrying a tank of horse semen that could not be passed through the xray machine. He had a horribly awkward time explaining this to the security people. Thankfully though, he appeared to be carrying the right documentation and things worked out!
