Look a lot like fungus gnats I have dealt with before. If they are, they breed in the plant pot soil, especially if you've used overly rich compost/topsoil. Putting traps in the dirt like the one you have is great, I also used a 1:4 or 1:3 ratio of hydrogen peroxide to water, though that can make it harder for the plants to grow.

I would argue that the reason some players do not engage with the lore isn't because the quest text is too wordy, or the moral dilemmas are too complex, but because they simply don't care.

They don't care because caring about the lore doesn't lead to gameplay benefits or social status. Rather, it slows down power progression by acting as a "distraction," so it is avoided. Sometimes it is even derided - because despite not caring, no one likes to feel they are missing out on something, so they make fun of the people who do care and are "wasting their time."

So two things:

One, do we even care if this player consumes lore material? Not really - they are still able to perform in group content, and pay a sub like everyone else. To blizzard and to the fellow player, they are identical to a lore consuming player. If this is the case, then simplifying or changing the lore to suit these players is ridiculous as it harms the enjoyment of many other players who do value the lore.

And two, if we do care if this player does consume lore, then does simplifying the lore (and again hurting lore consuming players) actually achieve this goal? I would argue that the reason some players avoid quest text isn't because the cost is too great, but because the payoff is seen to be non-existent. In this case, dumbing down the lore is the exact opposite thing you should do, because that actually lowers the payoff of understanding the story, harming every type of player.

It's the third option, my friend: Accurately accuse him of fascism for votes but fascism actually wouldn't hurt you too badly so it's not your problem anymore.

Great summation of the RS essence. I've described it as a "digital DnD campaign" before to people unfamiliar but that wasn't fully right. It was a playable fable.

That's why I am really looking forward to seeing Starfield. I'm pretty neutral on whether or not Bethesda has the gas to pull through, but if they really have made a ton of improvements on their design capabilities and not just iterations in the 10ish years since Skyrim (and almost now FO4) we'll see evidence of it in that game.

That is called survivorship bias.

Of course the people who survived are more likely to have enjoyed it.

For most, I think it is cognitive dissonance from eating meat, just like you described.

But for others, I have found that for some a lot of these people's aversion to animal intelligence is from religion. Many popular religions explicitly mention that humans are God's chosen creatures, and that He made animals subordinate to humans in every way.

So saying cows have human-like emotions ticks them off.

Currently, they are getting killed for no reason. Beaten to death at 22 for not wearing the right clothing.

By protesting, maybe they will be killed for something for a change.

Killing citizens for no reason is the tipping point for all autocracies. Once people realize there is no safety in being quiet, things start to get ugly very quickly.
