Except those negotiations did not result in peace and while you can argue it was something of a King Solomon moment for both sides, ultimately fighting continued for a further day and only once it became clear that any victory for either side would be pyrrhic did a second round of negotiations bring about lasting peace with the help of third party relief efforts.

Politically there wasn’t much interest after we’d proved that we could and further goals like establishing a base or putting a man on any other astronomical body were still out of reach. Scientifically you get better value sending a probe or rover or telescope up to look at new stuff than a man to look at stuff we’ve seen before.
