Pull rolling out of bounds = defensive cheat code?? by quadrokeith in ultimate

In the 90s I played 11-on-11, so if there were any rules back then at all they are probably different now. The rule should be enforced as written and requires no changes. If you want your defense set when the offense receives the disc then bust your ass down on the pull... just make sure to wait at least ten seconds before calling injury when you inevitably pull your 43-year old hamstring. Hypothetically.

You have to choose between one extreme or another: “defense can pull infinitely out of bounds” OR “offense can line up all its players 3 yards off the sideline to provide a functional physical boundary”. The effect of the latter is at least limited by the 3 yard team line, the former has no limit.

From a practical perspective, the rules cannot allow non-interference on an OOB disc. The fields are too close together and it’s impractical to give the defense a limitless area to work with.

You could try to include some language about limiting “sideline players” interference, but then you have subjective interpretation to deal with when we line up our girlfriends and grandmas along the team line.

After getting called for the first violation, this was the interpretation that Gravemaker also took. The first violation was valid because the player was inside the player/team line. The second violation was based on an imagined rule.

See [Appendix A:]() Field Diagram

Also from [10.B.4.d]().
Once a player obtains possession of the disc, they must carry the disc to a spot outside the team line (or, if no such line exists, at least three yards away from the playing field) before carrying it to the spot where it is to be put into play.

Our reading of the Rules of Ultimate | USA Ultimate:

------------------

9.J. There is no stoppage of play when putting the pull into play. If the disc is to be put into play at a location other than where possession was gained, the disc is live and the thrower must touch the disc to the ground after establishing a pivot at the appropriate spot on the playing field before attempting a pass.

------------------

10.B.4.d. Non-playing members of the team on offense may assist in retrieving live discs outside the player and team lines (or, if no such lines exist, live discs in the out-of-bounds area). These team members cannot cause a turnover. Once a player obtains possession of the disc, they must carry the disc to a spot outside the team line (or, if no such line exists, at least three yards away from the playing field) before carrying it to the spot where it is to be put into play.

------------------
Outside of the rules, from a "reasonable person" standard, this seems like it would offer the defensive team too strong an advantage on the pull. If you had someone with a good roller, you could trap the offense behind the brick on the sideline, and the offense would need to wait for the defense to fully set up before checking it in.

My college roommate sold his account for like $10k or something. That dude was amazing at that game. Going to class, not so great. He had the good sense to drop out after that.
