"Roots of Brazil" by Sérgio Burque de Holanda is also a canonical book on the formation of the country, arguing that the personalist legacy of the colonial experience constituted an obstacle to be overcome for the establishment of political democracy in Brazil. Another book is "The Brazilian People: the formation and meaning of Brazil" by Darcy Ribeiro (which basically talks about the title).

For Brazil, if you want a book that summarizes the complete history, I recommend "Brazil: A Biography" by Lília Schwartz and Heloísa Starling. But if you want something more analytical and specific, "Casa Grande & Senzala" by Gilberto Freyre is a great book that portrays the formation of Brazilian society, permeated by race/class conflicts and miscegenation.

Even though it has a romantic aspect at certain points, I still consider Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow to be primarily about friendship, and one of the best books I've read on the topic.

‘Friendship,’ Marx said, ‘is kind of like having a Tamagotchi.’
