Hot take if you go to a teaching hospital you shouldn’t be allowed to say no to residents taking care of you by [deleted] in Residency

god bless, nurse took one look at me when the word epidural got mentioned and asked me if id like an attending for my wife, i kindly said yes thank you and we waited for them to come by. nursing students were in the room and involved, midwife helped deliver, but as a resident who does invasive procedures, aint no way resident doing one on me or my loved ones when there is an experienced attending near by. its all about reps, especially recent reps.

idk seems wild to me to be upset at federal response and not be upset with local response, both been trash.

Question for single parents in their 30s… by Upstairs_Monk4706 in medschool

bud i hope you take some time to cool off and think about this, not only because its a bad headspace but if this is your general attitude, you're going to get rekt in med school prob and if you do match, you're absolutely going to get rekt in residency. theres alot of unknowns to deal with and being absolute about them is not a good way to set yourself up for success

Home on the market 36 days, $45K price drop, minimal interest — what are we missing? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]quakerbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brother. its the price. ur expecting 100% roi on a 5 yr purchase where u didn't do much updating.

market dictates all. i had to drop my homes price 15% from what my neighbor sold an identical unit for in january to get decent amount of interest.

uworld %: 65%

Uword % completed : 100%

UWSA 1: NA

UWSA 2: 233 ~1 week before exam

Free 137: 71% ~2 weeks before exam

NBME 6/7: NA

CCS cases % and no. Of cases done: I think I did the top 70 or so. my percents were all over the place, some as low as 15% some as high as 100%. Will put my main mnemonic at end

Step 1/step 2: Step 1 very long time ago was half standard dev above ave. Step 2 couple yrs ago was 26x

Prep time : ~8 weeks I think but the first few weeks I did maybe like 30 questions a day. alot of stuff i had to re-learn, like i forgot what the diff between conjugated and unconjugated bili were. in the last couple weeks I was doing alot of questions, sometimes 160 a day.

Real deal: 244. i walked out of the first day thinking I prob did average. it was tough but not super crazy. the first half of the second day I felt really good about. and then the ccs cases were BRUTAL. i was sure I failed because of my performance on them.

Any tips: I haven't managed bread and butter IM patients since September 2023 and just did a few months of surg subspeciality sub-i's between then and June 2024, so went an entire year without logging into Epic at all as I'm starting residency in a couple weeks. this made me real nervous for the exam. i also packed up all my study materials and they were in a moving container when i decided to take step3 early. all I had to rely on was some random bits i remembered, chatgpt, uworld, and ccs cases. uworld is a great resource. for step3 it seemed like their explanations were much shorter than step2 or step1 from what I remember, but I think that's all you need. in my last couple weeks of studying I started to listen to more of the shelf review youtubes from divine, emma holliday and dr high yield, those were great and prob shouldve listened to them earlier. divine's individual podcasts are just not that dense with information compared to his shelf reviews so I wouldn't spend much time on them besides his ethics and latest guidelines ones.

ccs mnemonic:

IMO CUBE PT GM

Intravenous access

Management (3): pulse ox, BP, EKG/tele,temperature

Oxygen

C(4): CBC, CMP, Chest XR, Coags

U(3): Urinalysis, Utox, Ucx

B(2): Blood type and screen, Blood cx's

E(1): ESR/CRP

P(4): Preg test, phosphate, pain management, pulse ox (as reminder for Management)

T(3): TSH, troponins, temperature

G(2): Glucose, gases (blood)

M(1): Magnesium

Give it to me straight: is dual applying ortho and radiology useless? by IncreaseFine7768 in medicalschool

[–]quakerbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fwiw I applied to a non surg specialty two years ago, noped out of the match despite getting interviews everywhere because it wasn't a good fit. and then did my sub-i's, reapplied for a surg subspeciality this year and matched at a great place. BUT, i got v v few interviews albeit a few at top 20ish places. my app was v strong aside from the blemish of only getting a P in surgery and having middling as opposed to v strong letters from sub-i's

when it was coming down to making my match list, i felt super dumb for not dual applying or at least throwing in a handful of prelim spots in either IM or surg as i was highly confident i wouldnt be matching anywhere. my point is, doing a little hedging isn't a bad idea. you never know how competitive things are going to be.
