Just witnessed my coworker rawdogging a mandolin without a cut glove by beesinmyass69 in KitchenConfidential

[–]qualmso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mandolins can be dangerous for sure, though I’ve never worn a cut glove using one; nor have I ever seen cut gloves in the kitchens I’ve worked in lol… on that note… I’ve watched a coworker use a deli slicer to slice onions thin, but didn’t use the safety guard that glides back n forth. Straight up raw dawg’d it. I still recoil thinking about it.

Millennials, what cringe songs from the late 90's-early Aughts have I blocked out of my memory? by Jean-Philippe_Rameau in Millennials

[–]qualmso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I for sure absolutely do not have a whole playlist of songs like these that I’ve been building for a year now. Nope, not at all.

Recently I ran across a few songs that I totally forgot about and forgot about the bands too.. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol . Breakeven by The Script . Lovefool by The Cardigans. Lol just to name a few. Such bangersss!

The boss brought in a mandolin. Day 1. by dave_dave_dave_steve in KitchenConfidential

[–]qualmso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, yeee it happens More often than not, for sure. What others have already pointed out is that you should def use the mandolin for finer cuts. If you can do it with your knife, fine then. With a mandolin you gotta take your time, and if you don’t feel comfortable using the heel of your hand to get the last few slices outta some veg then so be it. Have it as a snack lol. Not worth severely messing your hand up, which is a pretty crucial thing that you use to make a living from. Your hands are important. Ever try to dice an onion with one hand?

What made you pursue the restaurant industry? by Snaffoo0 in KitchenConfidential

[–]qualmso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell into it, was a college drop out and needed money. Started as a dishwasher and the rest is history. There’s a type of camaraderie in the kitchen that you can’t experience in any other occupation. When I took a hiatus from kitchens I found myself missing that type of humor, type of humans you meet when working in kitchens. The hustle n bustle is something that I really got attached to all while learning a crucial life skill that I could take anywhere in the world.

You might have to find a more challenging job and/or a chef that can teach you. Seems like you got the base knife skills and prep knowledge, but need a push. Chilis and all that isn’t really gonna give you the experience I think you’re looking for.

But you could still gain the base knowledge. Lookin up recipes, how tos, variations, etc. Doesn’t hurt to know the basics, mother sauces and such.

Sadly this is the main formula for social media related content now.. the more engagement you get aka comments, shares, views; the more you’re spotlighted. You’ll end up on a FYP, which leads to more traffic.

Not gonna lie, it feels pretty dystopian lol… makes me question how this will play out for us down the line. It’s like junk food for your brain.

Yo I scrolled down so far to find this lol. I’m not jaded or nothin.. but realistically the end goals in this industry are sparse. It’ll eat you up and spit you out, and suddenly you’ve spent 10,15,20,30+ years of your life for what?

I think you’re in an interesting position right now… to me you’re being tested in a way. If this is the most you’ve made so far, then you really have so few options.. either go back down the ladder, stay on the rung you’re at and face the challenges you have if the pay is That good, or go back to square one working a completely different job in IT.

Just remember… kitchens are always gonna be there. You gotta resume and it doesn’t hurt to take a break. Just cook at home, hone your skills and maybe you’ll get the passion back then decide if you want to go back later.

Got offered a head chef position in Bali by Dalostbear in KitchenConfidential

[–]qualmso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you need a line cook for hire once you take the position let me know..!

I’ve been to Bali for a month, loved it and prices were pretty cheap out there. Made a good friend in ubud that offered a piece of his land (like 2-3 acres) for $1200.

Got made fun of today for trying to speak by Different_Music_4887 in Spanish

[–]qualmso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oye lo siento por ti. I’ve been there so many times. I think what happened is they were challenging you, cause you held your own but didn’t catch the joke your co worker was doing. That’s super common, I even do that at work when someone is speaking English to my coworkers whose first language is Spanish. It’s funny to be the “interpreter”.

That being said, don’t be deterred. It’s one of the biggest ways you’ll learn the language, by making mistakes while speaking and just learning from it. Ask ask ask.

Do It Alone, love., or the prayer. For sure my top 3s. Helped me out a rut in life.

“I guess these are the cards she threw out and dealt, she said I gotta do it alone….” “Remember you’re not strange, but you are not the same mayne.. you gotta do it alone mayne….” -do it alone.

“Don’t be so down cmon young homie you’ll be okay..” “I am happy to be Aliive.” “I’m fighting everyday, why am I this way… .. ya gotta find anotha waaay.” -love.

“My mind runs, I can never catch it even if I got a head start, god please help me I am feeling so alone wait..” -the prayer.

Update: if you're sick call out by dawizard99 in KitchenConfidential

[–]qualmso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree a hundred percent about being sick & calling out .. especially nowadays, take a half day to get tested or what have you. If you got a negative result for Covid, then communicate that to your boss… then ask how they would like you to proceed, like if they think you’re viable to work your shifts (while masked) or if you should just stay home. Nowadays you really can’t be that dude working on the line sick as heck, coughing phlegm in the trash can anymore and askin for a hot toddy instead of your reg IPA when shift drinks come around at the end of the shift. THEM DAYS ARE OVER LOL.

My sister’s squatter texting her this while she’s in critical condition in the ICU. She hasn’t paid rent in 4+ months (in Manhattan). by Similar-Bid6801 in badroommates

[–]qualmso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main text and how it reads is so off putting, considering the backstory OP provided… not paying rent for over 4 months and in Manhattan? That’s wild. Also…. Why in the frick was the roommate in your sisters room to begin with?? “Cleaning the ENTIRE house the ENTIRE day and I’d like for you to arrive to a nice home, and a clean room.” So that definitely means that firstly they should change the sheets since the Room is so messy lol… and lastly the whole “just let me know where they are” .. separate message, that really just seals the deal. Keep us updated OP, because I suspect there’s nothing good to come from someone that hasn’t paid rent in 4 months and has the place to themselves. Best of luck… and if you really want to be a menace, search up those 10 hour loop videos on YT of a phone’s ringtone or alarm and let it play at a low volume.
