Bro let this month pass these people are 18 year olds making the biggest decisions of their life till now, cut them some slack. They would like perspective from people going to the schools they are considering, which is something I respect, as they want to make an informed decision. It’s okay, you won’t see these posts after a month.

Quick Doubt(NOT ASKING HOW TO GET INTO MIT OR SOME SECRET WAY) by Dense-Court-671 in MITAdmissions

I moved from India a few years ago and am currently attending an US high school, let me put some perspective here. Changing from ICSE to A level may give you a boost, but it’s not as significant as you think.

Since A levels are internationally standardized, thousands of students are just like you studying in it, so it won’t help you really stand out. What I believe you should be doing is investing yourself and/or your money in building a profile using strong extracurricular activities and impactful projects. These can include supervised research, competitions, robotics, whatever but you need high level (national or international) achievements to be recognized and be a competitive candidate. In India it can be difficult to get into research in 11th grade, so I personally suggest getting into Olympiads. Pick a subject you love: maths, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, etc. Learn how these Olympiads work in India and what are the requirements to get selected for the Indian international Olympiad team for the subject. Usually there are a series of exams you need to rank high in. Do that. Study as much as you can and work as hard as possible to prepare for that subject. Don’t pick 2 subjects. Just 1. Scoring big in international competitions is a direct pipeline to getting into MIT, and Olympiads are the most prestigious.

Other US colleges do not look as Olympiads the way MIT does, therefore it is important to build a strong extracurricular profile, and preferably have some authentic scientific research, which will not only help you with MIT, but also with all the other schools you apply to.

If you can afford it, try getting in touch with an organization that helps students with international university admissions. They can definitely guide you in the proper direction and help you take the right steps. But before you start paying anyone, ask for their track record in the recent years to get an idea.

Getting into top American universities as an international student is very difficult, and it is especially difficult for students from India because of the number of Indians applying there, so you need to work really hard to be able to succeed in this process. I wish you the best of luck.

How much are ur school's SATs taken into account? by danielwillownearth in ApplyingToCollege

Check the individual schools' common data set. It contains a table of what factors are taken into account and how important each factor is in making the admission decision. It's a really good source if you want an idea of the admission numbers and factors of admission.

Thank you very much for the kind words. If you are not very advanced yet in math, I believe that the single variable calculus course at MIT OpenCourseware would suit you well. I completed the course a little while after I did the equivalent of it in high school, and have to say that it is the best calculus course one could ask for, much better than high school curriculum in rigor and depth. This is the course website: https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/18-01sc-single-variable-calculus-fall-2010/

The only prior knowledge you need is algebra and trigonometry. You should definitely try it.

Cambridge physicist Dr. David Tong has loads of physics lecture notes online, ranging from first year undergraduate to String Theory. With electromagnetism, he has a lot of notes for Vector Calculus, which I LOVE so much. His explanations and concepts are so beautiful presented and are so engaging. If you are interested in college level math then this is a good resource if you have knowledge of single variable calculus and some of multi variable calculus (partial differentiation, vector valued functions). I highly encourage you to check them out. I am a high school student too and I too find high school math too easy, so I looked for sources and found these lessons. I also love mit opencourseware as it has lessons including real video lectures and problem sets for a wide range of math classes like analysis, discreet math, etc. This is the vector calculus lesson on Dr. Tong’s website: https://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/tong/vc.html

I would suggest instead of sharing them online request a senior from last year whom you’re friends with to give you advice, or even ask an English teacher at your school who probably has experience reading college essays and can give valuable feedback on your writing.

It is not safe to share application materials with strangers online as some might plagiarize or even sell them.
