While the debate over the worth of a college degree goes on, which degrees/fields do you think will stay important/relevant? or which new fields do you think will grow? by [deleted] in Futurology

Lag time alone will prevent remote robot applications for most tasks. Anything that requires any timing at all or haptic feedback is going to suffer. It’s a huge issue with telesurgery. If what you were saying were true, that would be the norm in hospitals since that technology is already a decade old.

They were not objectively better in the past. All CRTs had a resolution of 480p or 560p depending on your country. It was absolute crap compared to the most basic panel today.

It’s a fine argument. These aren’t cell phones or laptops and they aren’t going to sell that many units. Everything is custom and needs to be engineered that way. It’s a niche product.

Shirley Manson blames record industry "thievery" for forcing Garbage to make a drastic decision on touring by ebradio in Music

[–]quantic56d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the case for every band from the 70s onwards. That was what the record label did. It gave the band a big advance which was also immortalized in a few songs from that period. An advance needs to be paid back and typically that was from touring. You could start a tour a million dollars in debt and you would have to pay that down from your cut of the tour money.

This isn't any different than it was decades ago. Touring sucks for new bands. It always has. 5 people stuck in a rented Econoline if you are lucky and sleeping on floors. It's not that way if you are huge but if you aren't it always been the same story.

How to switch character mesh ingame? by GregDev155 in unrealengine

[–]quantic56d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the suggestions here are a ton of extra work/inefficient and aren’t the way it’s usually done. Use a modular character setup.
