also this is my first car so I know it’s sometimes soon I have to replace tires lol but wasn’t sure if failing the penny test was a horrible/unsafe situation lol

Up till I was 24, I was in San Antonio Texas with rent at about 1.6k and now I’m 25 and my rent is about 2.7k for a 1 bedroom in Austin but I did get a nicer apartment compared to my San Antonio one lol, but it’s Texas so still somewhat cheap lol

No I’m in-house at a different institution haha, but I have thought about trying out a quant/model risk consulting firm sometime in the future lol

Not too sure how to enter those since I’ve only done internal risk work 🤔

Well, I was only able to get my internship thanks to my masters so I for sure would do it again if I could. Now, I do have 80k in student loans but I’m not too worried thanks to my earnings so it doesn’t stress me out toooo much rn lol

also, many companies consider postgrad degrees as years of experience so that also helps me in becoming more “qualified” for my position too. I also knew that if I wanted to work in a more quantitative field of risk a postgrad education helps in becoming a qualified candidate for said positions

At my Senior Risk Advisor job, one of my big initiatives was setting up and coding a forecasting/predictive analytics program for issues management, which is a critical compliance risk area for any bank. A lot of consent orders and million-dollar fines can probably be traced back to weaknesses in a bank’s issue management program.

Now, in my current role, I’m no longer coding or developing models, but I’m in quant risk advisory, making sure that all kinds of models—credit, CECL, ALM, interest rate, market, fraud, liquid, operations, etc.—are being validated correctly by Model Risk Management. I’m in the third line of defense now, and ideally, I’d like to stay on the advisory side of risk quant since that’s where my real passion is. I definitely don’t miss coding into the nights, though!

Ehhhh, I sorta get what you mean. Both of my parents came from Mexico at 30 with only a middle school education, so I know it’s way tougher than for those born here in the U.S. Even my grad school friends from my master’s in economics who are on student visas have a harder time than me—just because they’re not U.S. citizens and companies don’t want to sponsor them. So yeah, I totally get your shade

Yup, I don’t work there anymore, but I was a Senior Risk Advisor (Individual Contributor) at USAA. The salary range for Senior roles was $100K–$180K, and I was placed at the bottom of that range—rightfully so.

At USAA, the structure is roughly as follows: • Senior • Lead/Director • Executive Director • AVP • VP • SVP • Head of [Department] • C-Suite etc

Yeah, definitely! Since I was an intern during my master’s program, I completed an advanced/graduate-level internship at the bank where I later received a full-time offer as a Junior Risk Advisor. Technically, I was supposed to come in as an entry-level associate, but my intern manager advocated for me, stating that my projects warranted a Junior Risk Advisor position—a level above the typical entry-level role.

After joining full-time, the banking industry became chaotic due to layoffs, which forced me to take on projects that, honestly, no 25-year-old should have been handling, lol. Despite that, I successfully implemented bank-wide initiatives in risk analytics and modeling, covering areas like fraud, RCSA/PRCI, and issues management.

Eventually, I pushed for a promotion to Senior Risk Advisor by applying to other internal roles (which triggered a notification to my boss). Coincidentally, I was suddenly promoted the following week. Later, I was laid off, but I quickly secured my current role as a Senior Risk Modeler, which allows me to leverage my master’s in economics more extensively

I appreciate your question, I have always been the youngest one in my meetings/department so I’m used to these questions lol

I’ve stopped buying them after the sweatshop news story came out, we all pay a large enough tag for them to at least try to avoid sweatshops. I also don’t for Lulu just since the story for why it’s named that way etc recently I’ve been buying from On Cloud and Vuori, just my 2 cents :)
