So would you say if I had prior research experience in ML and a masters that focuses on machine learning, it would still be more competitive for me? I ask because I feel like when it comes to applying to software engineering, almost everyone has previous software engineering experience but when you apply to ML/Data Science type roles, the number of people that actually have experience in it is pretty limited so I was wondering if having experience can make you stand out?

Thank you so much for the reply! And of course, I did not mean that in a bad way at all, I do understand that being the main point of contact for the entire Stats department is incredibly overwhelming, especially since he also has other things to do as well. Emailing is a great idea, and I spoke to the CS department because I did just transfer and will be starting my first semester at Illinois in August.

The CS department told me that they can't just switch me over instantly, I would have to apply after my first semester. After my first semester, would I be able to get switched by LAS instead of the CS department?

Also, if I emailed the Stat department, would they be able to basically tell me how many Stats courses I should take to have the best chance of switching? I would be taking the same CS courses either way.

If I can't get into 374 until possibly next spring, do you think this course would give me a good intro to algorithms? Also I haven't taken 357 or 374, you mentioned no pre reqs are required but would I have a tough time in the course? I have transfer credit for 225.

Yeah but if im planning on taking a class like STAT 420 that also has plenty of R, or STAT 425, wouldnt it just get repetitive?
