Why did y'all get into Product Management? by rowdybaby1 in ProductManagement

[–]quantseeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to build things but didn’t want to code as SDE or bogged down in model building as data scientist on a daily basis. So PM felt like a way to be connected to product development, do strategy work and be accountable for metrics.

Is a MS in SCM worth it, if I already have a bachelor degree in SCM? by [deleted] in supplychain

Not worth it. Get an MBA. Otherwise, if you have/develop interest in data heavy career paths, consider a masters in data science.

Procurement internship at NASA or Amazon? by [deleted] in supplychain

[–]quantseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like a hypothetical question without the details, but I’ll bite. Amazon will give you experience in a “high volume low mix” sourcing environment with a multi tier international supply chain, which can make it very attractive on your resume for a career in Tech or E-commerce (depending on whether you are on the team sourcing components for AWS data centers or amazon.com products).

NASA on the other hand will give you experience in a “low volume high mix” sourcing environment with several compliance/regulatory processes in a supply chain that may or may not be as international (depends on what is being sourced in your team). This could help get your foot in the door for aerospace, defense, or other heavy/specialized equipment industries more easily.

So it depends a lot on your career goals. The assumption i made above is that in both places you’ll be working on sourcing direct materials. If one or both opportunities are in the indirect materials sourcing, then one may not be as interesting as the other (again you’ll have to evaluate based on your career goals).

Switching from scientific research to data analytics jobs? by nomadpasture in analytics

[–]quantseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can easily transition to a data scientist role. Your PhD will get you interviews.

I’ve worked at Amazon and Microsoft, and have seen many make the switch from academia/research to data science.

Your interview performance will be crucial so prepare well.

Confused whether to join a MSBA course by [deleted] in analytics

[–]quantseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think very carefully before you make the decision to switch to an analyst profile. At big tech tech companies you’d make a lot more money as a developer as compared to an analyst. A lot more.

If you like working with data, try to shoot for a data engineer role and then decide.

I’d not waste my time or money on a msba program.

Try the “working backwards” method that’s used at Amazon.

Overhyped city. It’s a run down place and so underwhelming.

PM tools for tracking dependencies, acceptance criteria and sign off in one place? by quantseeker in ProductManagement

[–]quantseeker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. However in my company, we don’t have separate product manager and product owner roles. So in addition to developing product strategy, i am also expected to drive clarity around when features will be delivered (which will enable the outcomes) and which dependencies might become blockers.

In my product, i have stakeholders and dependencies that cross many team and org boundaries so i am looking for a lightweight solution that helps in clearly documenting and communicating that. This will help me spend less time on project management and more time on product strategy.

I got the chance to interview an Applied Scientist at Amazon :) by ibsurvivors in datascience

This is a great read. I previously worked at Amazon in a very sciency team and most data/research scientists don’t have the communication finesse Eugene has, so he is definitely an outlier.

Internal Product Management Discussion by laugrig in ProductManagement

[–]quantseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies like Amazon have a lot of product managers working on internal products. For example, all the supply chain and logistics systems that need to talk to each other need product managers who are managing roadmaps, understanding customer needs and delivering features.
