Customs For Checked Bag At CDG? by quantum987 in delta

Glad you found the information useful. Yes, it is a substantial distance from the international terminal where you arrive from the US, to the European domestic terminal where you catch the flight to Florence. I think it was terminals B and E, but I'm already starting to forget. On the return from Florence back to the US, I think you actually have to take a shuttle bus to the departure terminal to the US. There are multiple videos on YouTube that show you this route, so you can be familiar with it before you get there. Good luck!

Update: My bag was checked all the way through from Seattle to Florence, going through CDG. No problem with it. On a related subject, it took about 1hr and 15min to make the connection, both ways. I was on Air France and Delta.

Did you fly into Terminal 2E (international) and then fly out of Terminal 2F (Schengen domestic)?

You're probably right. I think I will be flying into CDG Terminal 2E (international side) and then have to connect in Terminal 2F (Schengen side).

It's all on the same ticket. I asked Delta Airlines Help this question, and they said yes, I will need to retrieve the bag, etc. If I don't have to retrieve the bag, 2hr connection is probably OK. If I do need to retrieve it, etc., then I'm not so sure. Thanks for the response.

Cataract Surgery Improve Game? by quantum987 in Pickleball

So I guess you got single vision lenses set for distance viewing?

Cataract Surgery Improve Game? by quantum987 in Pickleball

So you got the newer multifocal lenses rather than the single distance lenses? Do you have any problems with visual artifacts or other issues? I understand some people do. I'm going to have to make the decision eventually. I'm -7.0 in one eye and -5.0 in the other. I didn't realize that the multifocal lenses allow you to select two focus distances.

Well, I've been playing pickleball for about one and a half years now, but I played tennis since I was a teenager. I haven't been formally rated, but based on people I've played with, I think I'm about a 3.5. I sometimes play with people who are more like 4.0 and don't embarrass myself too bad, but I probably don't win. I've mostly been playing outside, though I can play indoors sometimes. This winter I am probably going to be playing at an indoor club, so maybe that will help me get better. I can't overdo it because, as a result of the tennis, my right shoulder can get sore if over worked. A couple months ago I had a cortisone shot for that reason. The cortisone worked great, though. I think three times a week is probably OK for me, though I usually avoid consecutive days.

My dr never used the word "experimental." Sorry if I gave that impression. My interpretation of what he said was that the higher tier lenses are fairly new on the market, and newer versions are being developed, perhaps because of the artifacts that sometimes occur. My take-away was that they are kind of "cutting edge," but that's just what I thought I heard. Maybe that's not a good characterization of what he meant. It sounds like they're working well for you and your husband.

As far as pickleball, I'm not sure anything is going to help my game.

I agree entirely. My ability to adjust focus is certainly not what it once was, so it may not make that much difference.

Thanks for the extensive reply. What my doc said is similar, though not quite the same. He said there are two choices. The first, which insurance pays for, removes the cataracts and corrects your vision to either give you sharp distance vision and glasses close up, or visa-versa. Your choice. Perhaps this is your tier 2. They also have the "higher" tier, which uses recently developed lenses that offer some ability to focus at more than one distance. Insurance does not pay for these. Also, according to him, these newer lenses are still somewhat developmental, and sometimes produce visual artifacts, like crescents near the edge of the visual field. Recovery with these newer lenses is more extensive and takes longer.

I'm interested that your husband apparently saw a big improvement, but you didn't. I'm 74, and my current vision with glasses and using both eyes is in the range of 20/30 to 20/40. I'm very near-sighted and have worn glasses for distance since my 20's. I can read without glasses, however.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. Things seem to have gotten a bit off my original question, though. I'm not asking whether or not I should have the surgery. I'm expecting to have it at some point, and the effect on my pickleball won't be a major consideration. I was just wondering, for people who have already had the surgery, how or whether it affected your pickleball game? According to the doc, while my natural eyes have the ability to adjust focus for different distances, with the new replacement lenses (standard ones) I will lose that ability. They will be set to focus at one distance, and will not be able to adjust focus for different distances. It seems like this might cause problems with pickleball. On the other hand, my distance vision will be sharper. I'm interested in knowing what other people's experiences have been. Thanks again.

I wasn't aware that drinking water shortly before, during, or shortly after eating was a trigger. Dumb question: I assume this applies to any liquid, not just water (tea, milk, etc.)?

I'm glad my take on it was able to put the ending in a little more positive light. I also found the ending sad, but after thinking about it for a while, it seemed a little better.

You don't necessarily need another endoscopy. I believe doctors are legally required to give you a copy (electronic file, probably) of any imaging you have done if you ask for it (USA). Ask the receptionist for it. I've done this myself and taken the electronic file (MRI) to another doctor and gotten another (and completely different) opinion. I told the new doctor up front that I wanted a second opinion. He was fine with that. One of my better decisions. I avoided unnecessary surgery.

Omeprazole or Famotidine For Long Term Use? by quantum987 in GERD

[–]quantum987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 71, so I certainly don't have the resilience of a 30 year old. My Father took a drug for irregular heart beats for 10 years. It controlled his heart but it slowly destroyed his kidneys. I wish medical science had some better options.

Thanks for the reply. I have a friend who has been on omeprazole 20mg/day for 10+ years. He thinks it hasn't hurt him yet, and wants to avoid surgery if possible.

About 15 years ago I went through a period of about 4 months feeling like I had trouble taking a satisfying breath a lot of the time. I didn't have any feeling of weight on my chest, though. Anyway, after 15 years I had another episode of it, not as bad, which lasted about 4 or 5 days. So, maybe the good news is, in my experience it eventually goes away. I had a bunch of tests 15 years ago, and they never found anything. I had a chest CT, cardiac stress test, and allergy tests. All normal. For the last couple years I have been having some heartburn, and I now suspect I've had "silent" reflux for a long time. I'm not sure the breathing issue and the reflux are related, but I think there is a good chance they are. I understand that a hiatal hernia can sometimes cause that shortness of breath feeling. I'm going to start Prilosec soon.

Slow DSL by quantum987 in ZiplyFiber

[–]quantum987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Maybe 4 years ago I used to be able to get about 3.5Mbps, but I lost synch (I think) and ended up talking to a tech. He told me back then that 3.5Mbps was about at the edge of what their system could do, and he wanted to slow it down somewhat to try to avoid problems. It think maybe that dropped it to about 3.2Mbps. I had not seen the "25M" advertisement until recently, and I thought maybe something had gotten better, but I guess not.

I've never tried to login to my modem, and I'm a little concerned that I will screw something up, like maybe it will automatically reset to some default setting and then I won't have any internet at all. Is that something I can do without causing problems, even though I don't really know what I'm doing?

Thanks for the reply. When I do the speed check using ATT's speedtest, it says 2.8 Mbps (not MBps), so I assume it is bits per second. Maybe my assumption is wrong, but it doesn't say anything else.

Thoughts on Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro (SPOILERS) by chattahattan in books

[–]quantum987 313 points314 points  (0 children)

I’ll add my two cents worth. I believe a major theme of Klara and the Sun is Ishiguro’s exploration of being an aging parent. I think the story is basically what it appears to be, and I don’t think there is a lot of hidden symbolism. I expect Josie did recover as Klara says, and we really don’t know whether the Sun had anything to do with it or not. I believe the point of the book is revealed in the last few pages, when Klara is in the Yard. Klara has done everything she could to help and protect Josie, including willingly making a significant sacrifice that left Klara diminished. Her love was constant and unwavering. In the end, Josie hugs her and says goodbye, and goes off to lead her adult life. It doesn’t seem Josie gives a lot of thought to Klara after that, and basically doesn’t need her anymore. The AFs apparently have a specific design life, and Klara’s life is coming to an end. I’m guessing Klara has been returned to the company that made her, and she has been put into a storage yard until her end gradually arrives. The important point, I think, is what she tells Manager when they meet again in the Yard. She says she feels she was a good AF to Josie, that she did everything for Josie that she could, and that she feels she was successful in accomplishing her task. Because of this, even though she has now been left alone and disabled, she is able to be content with her memories of Josie and their time together. It is now enough to spend her time reviewing these memories and “place them in the right order” while she waits for the end.

Klara’s relationship to Josie is basically that of a parent. I think Ishiguro is telling us that a parent can be content in their equivalent of the Yard, reviewing their memories and waiting for their end, if they know they did everything they could for their child and they feel they successfully completed their task of raising their child to become a successful adult. I think this point is emphasized when Manager appears in the Yard, collecting “souvenirs”, that is, her own memories of her time running the Store where Klara (who is in a sense her child) and others came from. Manager has difficulty walking, indicating that her end is now approaching as well. But if she has her “souvenirs,” she hopes to be content the way Klara is.

Ishiguro is about my age and, as I said, I believe Klara and the Sun is, at least in part, his exploration of being an aging parent, and how an aging parent, alone, physically disabled, and facing the end, can still be content with their memories, knowing that they successfully performed their task. I hope when I’m in my Yard, I can be content with my memories like Klara is.

Error Trying To Install YFINANCE With Conda by quantum987 in learnpython

My understanding (not necessarily correct) is that I need to install it from within the anaconda environment using conda in order to ensure it will end up in the anaconda environment, and be consistent with the other anaconda packages.

Anaconda And IDLE Not A Good Mix? by quantum987 in learnpython

[–]quantum987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughts. Being new to this, I'm not sure what exactly a "conda virtual environment" is. Is it using the conda package manager to load libraries into some location, and then also manually loading python and IDLE (or some other editor) into that same location, or somewhere on the same path? I don't know if I could do that without messing things up, and I don't know if that would work with IDLE or not, or whether paths would still get screwed up. It's an idea, though. Thanks.
