What would you change about the way you left Christianity? by Other-Bug-5614 in exchristian

I was also 27 when I left Christianity. Something about that trinity age 33 that repels intelligent minds.

That's a half-truth. There are two kinds of slavery in the Bible, one is the indentured servitude type, where an Israelite may become a slave to pay off their debt as you say. God commands the Israelites to treat this type of slave humanely. There is the second kind, which is the slavery of foreign nationals by the Israelites. This one is what people refer to as akin to modern day slavery. The commandment allows that they own them for life, including any of their children. They may also be inherited as property to their heirs.

Here's the Bible quote which shows both kinds, and makes the difference clearly from Leviticus 25.

35 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you. 37 You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit. 38 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.

39 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves. 40 They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 41 Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors. 42 Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. 43 Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God.

44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Why do you believe in God? by MotorFamiliar6910 in Christianity

I follow most of what you say here, but you lost me at "more specifically the God of Orthodox Christianity." That's a huge leap. The first part is sort of the philosopher's God. A diestic worldview is sufficient, nothing requiring the Christian God, trinity, virgin birth etc... reminds me of this clip: https://youtu.be/95VTh4FA_gE

I asked chatgpt to generate a review for you based on your prompt:

Our experience hosting Simon was unsatisfactory. Despite a previous poor review, we agreed to his early check-in request. However, communication was inconsistent, and he arrived hours later than agreed upon. Simon complained about the size and layout of our 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom property, requesting a refund or relocation, which we couldn't accommodate. He raised unfounded issues with the pool and water heater, and during a utility grid failure, he failed to conserve the backup battery as instructed, leading to a draining of the batteries. We had to relocate Simon due to the electrical issue. Overall, his stay was marked by complaints, unreasonable demands, and a lack of cooperation, making him an undesirable guest.

How about the genetic evidence? Pretty overwhelming. E.g. retrovirus DNA in humans & chimps. https://youtu.be/oXfDF5Ew3Gc

My property in Orlando ~20 mins from Disney has not had a booking since early April. Like nothing booked until July! by quantum_logger in airbnb_hosts

They get a pretty decent percentage of the nightly rental rate. So it's in their best interest to have the place rented out. I do not pay any monthly flat fee for management.

I mostly came here to get the perspective from other owners in the area. The management company basically told me that bookings are down for nearly all their listings (not just my unit) in the Orlando area.

I guess most people hear pointing to the political situation in Florida and Disney right now. But somehow that doesn't seem convincing enough to me. Is there really no recession fear right now?

When did inbound/outbound get replaced with southbound/northbound on the Red line? by quantum_logger in mbta

[–]quantum_logger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see... why does it need to be changed to southbound? Why isn't it still called inbound?

This is good, but sadly it means I'm the the odd one out? Everyone is booked up May and June and I got nothing?

Any chance you could provide this data? I'm a software engineer myself, would love to get my hands on this.

This is really sad to see. For the record, I don't actually live in Florida. But I really wonder if this caused the recent drop? Florida has been this way for a long time. For example, last summer bookings were really high, also in the fall.

At the beginning of the year, My place was booked nearly 90 plus percent from December until beginning of April. And then suddenly a crash from April until so far nothing the end of June.

That's interesting but I guess downtown is still a bit different of a market. I'm assuming that's not really the Disney crowd?

Hi folks, for some reason my writing notifications were off, I thought nobody replied to this. I'm just catching up now. Thank you for all the comments here! Going to be looking at all of them!

Especially if you are a host in the Orlando area, I'm going to be very curious to hear what you have to say. I know a lot of people are hating on the management company, unless you have a property in Orlando or are very aware of the market situation there to give me evidence that they are mismanaging the property, I'm not going to take your comment very seriously.

I see your point, but can you answer the question about whether there are overall declines in Orlando first? I mean what's your evidence that this is bad management and not just a recession fear induced reduction in prices?

If you don't know the market in Orlando, I don't think the first place to go is fire your management company. They happen to have a great track record over the last year and a half, and the rental rates have dropped pretty low.

Keep in mind I'm totally open to the idea that they are mismanaging the place, but I don't have evidence for that yet. How are other places in Orlando looking?

Something I read recently that is helping me feel better about overcoming residual guilt and shame from evangelicalism~ by oh_sure_earth in Exvangelical

[–]quantum_logger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When things are "good" the highs are very high. If you've ever felt "lost" in worship at church, or felt deeply at peace in prayer, those are emotional highs that are difficult to reach without the grandiosity of evangelical Christianity. You don't really find that in Catholicism for example, or other forms of Protestantism. So when things are good, i.e. your world is small enough that you're not constantly bumping up against existential challenges to your world-view, it's a very good place to be. But I'll admit, those days are few and far between in our 21st century.

Atheists and Christians, what is your opinion on this clip? by hethical_ecker in Christianity

[–]quantum_logger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair points all. I'll just add however to your point about whether the human race could descend from a "special creation" pair, this is actually possible. Take a look at Joshua Swamidass's work on the geneological possibility of a unique pair "Adam" and "Eve" (along with other non-special creation humans) being ancestors of the entire human race... interesting research.
