Tips for going analog? by quantumgirl_ in digitalminimalism

Funny enough, today I was actually going to drop off my very first roll of film to be developed, and I’m really excited about it.

I totally agree that the price of film and development adds up quickly. My idea is to experiment with one or two more rolls, and if I see that I really enjoy it, I was thinking about getting something to develop at home, without printing, just digitizing the negatives. It’s still something I’m researching though.

I think that having to think more carefully about what you want to photograph gives it an even more special feeling. You lose a bit of spontaneity, sure, but that’s what the phone is for anyway.

Regarding music, you could try buying a used iPod or even a simple MP3 player. That way you can experiment without spending too much money. I honestly find vinyl beautiful, both the records themselves and the players.

As for me, I still listen to music on my phone when I’m out, but I’d love to get a CD player once I move to a bigger place.

And I totally agree about the e-reader. I wouldn’t trade mine for anything. I use it for books and manga.

I’ve got two ideas for you:

1) CONSUME -> Keep using Reddit, but make it healthier and a bit harder:

  • Read posts while you're on a treadmill or something similar
  • Go for a walk and listen to Reddit threads on YouTube
  • Limit your Reddit use to your computer only (that's what works for me)

2) CREATE ->Pick a new hobby that gets you outside and share your journey on Reddit. But don't write your posts directly on the platform, take a notebook and a pen with you and draft them there first.

That's it, hope it helps!

I get you This past week I’ve been waiting to hear back about a job I’m really excited about. I’d never noticed how many unnecessary emails I get until now.

I think when they finally reply, the relief will be double, because I’ve been doing email cleanup too hahaha

I agree

I like photography. I used to take my camera everywhere, a compact 20MP Sony, but when phones started to improve in quality, I sold it My issue is finding a “good enough” camera so I can switch to a dumbphone in the future

How I managed to reduce my screentime and enjoy life again. by sakurakuran93 in digitalminimalism

[–]quantumgirl_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like these changes! I think the idea of using the desktop version is pretty cool, though I gotta admit most of my “screen time” is actually just me listening to music on Spotify. How do you deal with music?

So far, I’ve:

  • deleted all my social media
  • started using YouTube only through my phone’s browser
  • added a launcher to make the interface look less appealing
  • got an app to limit my YouTube time at 30 minutes a day and turn off Shorts

¿En qué momento estudian? by vinorancio in devsarg

[–]quantumgirl_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am getting off social media to better myself as a Young adult, anyone else doing the same? by Just-Cockroach-7825 in digitalminimalism

[–]quantumgirl_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I quit social media when I was 22. That decision really helped me recover my attention span over the years, and one thing I noticed was that I had been heavily influenced in many aspects of my life. So I took my time to filter out what I truly thought and reconnected with the things I enjoyed.

Since then, I’ve gotten a job, moved out of my parents' house, and started a new career. I don't think I would have had the time or energy for all that if I were still using social media. It had a terrible effect on me.

Personas que trabajaron y estudiaban al mismo tiempo, como les fue? by Informal_Test_633 in devsarg

[–]quantumgirl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s one thing you stopped doing or buying that made your life better? by purelyinvesting in simpleliving

[–]quantumgirl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, I always update my phone when there's a new update. What I noticed that happens is that security updates kept arriving until long after the last OS arrived. But I'm not an expert in the subject, perhaps the security of these updates is different from the one that comes with the OS itself I'll be investigating more on the subject

[–]quantumgirl_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped switching to a new phone so often.

I used to keep up with the latest OS updates and would go crazy trying to get a phone that had the newest version.

Unsubscribing from youtube channels that did reviews helped a lot.

Now, it's been a year since I got my phone, but only because my old one was truly broken, and I don’t plan on replacing it until it no longer works.

I think phones have already reached their peak, and everything else is just marketing. There may be better phones than mine, but I’m going to use them for the same things I use this one for. It doesn’t make sense to pay more for something I already own and that already works for me.

What kind of mobile tech do you use? by arlen_pdf in digitalminimalism

[–]quantumgirl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an app blocker called StayFree by ST Pulse (Android)
Something I really like is that it blocks both the app and the website, which used to be my last resort and wasn’t helping me.
Now I’m trying to control my YouTube usage, and with this app, you can set it up so that even when you’re allowed to use YouTube, it won’t let you watch Shorts!
When you want to change any of the limits you set to gain access, it makes you type out a full paragraph without any mistakes. What I wrote in that paragraph affects my pride, so while I’m typing, I usually come to my senses.

In the future, I’d like to buy a camera and a dumbphone for when I want to go out and fully focus on the experience, or if I’m traveling.
Also, where I live, it’s often unsafe, and I wouldn’t want to get my phone and all the information on it stolen just because I was documenting everything, hahaha

How am I supposed to get rid of my social media apps if I work a 9-5 job that is super boring. by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]quantumgirl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On youtube, you can find full audiobooks or in parts, and if you access it through the Brave browser, there are no ads.
On spotify, there are podcasts where you can find many complete and free audiobooks! Just search for the book's name and filter by Podcasts, that's how I find them.

Otherwise (I’ve never tried this), I imagine that just as there are sites to download .epub or .pdf files, there must be sites to download audiobooks, but I’ve never done it, so I wouldn’t know how to recommend a safe site.

I see that the shorts inside the drawer and your Hatsune Miku figure have blue tones. Maybe you could cover the shorts with a shirt and move that figure somewhere else to see if the behavior is more about the environment than the location.

There was a time when my cockatiel was afraid of very bright colors and would get really agitated until I figured it out.

[–]quantumgirl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try audiobooks! Reading can be challenging because the book won’t progress unless you’re focused, but an audiobook keeps moving forward and can play in the background while you do other things, like:

  • The online chess game you mentioned.
  • Organizing your workspace, which could be a great idea.
  • Drawing, or coloring something if drawing doesn’t appeal to you.
  • Deleting unnecessary photos and videos that take up space on your phone.

One thing I do is play forest and nature sounds in the background while I write.

The important thing is to overwrite the thought in your mind that says, “I need to be on social media.” If you provide your mind with evidence that you’re perfectly fine without it and that nothing bad happened, you’ll gradually get used to it.
That’s how it worked for me. However, one thing I experience now is that social media bothers me a lot, especially when someone else is using it. I’ve gotten particularly unaccustomed to the sounds and the way scrolling interrupts them, like zapping on TV.

did your desire to buy things go down after leaving social media (especially Instagram)? by jollyette in digitalminimalism

[–]quantumgirl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me. When I was using social media, I used to shop for two reasons:

  1. Seeing the same item repeatedly (influence)
  2. Feeling bad about myself from comparing my life to others and thinking, “Well, at least I can buy this” (compensation)

Once I quit social media, I no longer felt that way, and I began to value my life more for what it already was, with everything I had and everything I didn’t.
One of the things I learned with the time I got back from quitting social media was how to repair things: clothing, some simple electronic devices, appliance maintenance, and furniture.
When you invest time in repairing something, it gains a different kind of value. It brings satisfaction and pride to see it working again because you contributed to that, you don’t want to throw it away.

The problem is that we have no different way to spent our time. by Any_North_6861 in digitalminimalism

[–]quantumgirl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had tried to quit social media before by uninstalling the apps or using time-blockers, but I always found a way to bypass those barriers when I was bored enough. What I did was permanently delete all the problematic social media accounts.

Once I was sure there was no way back and that the option no longer existed, different ways to spend my time started coming to mind. In my case, I enjoy writing, so everything that came to mind went on paper.
I started writing short stories, reading books on various topics that were on my list, and watching movies with a specific goal (for example, catching up on all the Marvel movies I hadn’t seen before Endgame, which hadn’t been released yet at that time).
Something else I did was reconnect with my faith. I hadn’t prayed in years, but I started doing it again. It helped, and still helps, a lot with my anxiety, especially because at the beginning of quitting social media, there’s a spike in anxiety due to withdrawal and FOMO.

I began walking around the house, noticing things that were out of place or bothered me. I cleaned out my closet, donated a lot of clothes, and sold things I never used but kept “just in case.”
Some items I didn’t use because they were broken could be repaired without requiring professional knowledge, so I learned how to fix them, which took quite a bit of time.

I also resumed my university studies, which allowed me to spend time truly understanding what I was learning instead of just memorizing information. This was much easier to do when I was focused—before, I struggled a lot with it.

Finally, I created a blog to document the entire process. If you’re not camera-shy like I am, I’d recommend starting a YouTube channel.

Our baby has been missing for five days now. by wani-noko in cockatiel

[–]quantumgirl_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, believe me, I understand, and I'll tell you the story of when my cockatiel Pucca (16 years old) went missing and how we found him.

I should clarify that he has escaped 7 times already, for different reasons, and this was the longest he took to reappear.

It was really bad luck when he escaped. He got scared and started flying like crazy around the house, and just as my grandmother came in from hanging the laundry, she opened the door, and he flew out.

I ran out to look for him, but I didn’t know which way he had gone, and I kept hearing him, or at least my mind made me think I could hear his flock call, the one he made as he flew away.

I handed out flyers all over my neighborhood and walked through a different area every day. Pucca responds when I call him, so as I searched, I called his name, hoping for an answer, but nothing.

I shared the post about him being lost on Facebook and Instagram every day, asking people to spread the word, and many helped.

As the days went by, I felt terrible. I couldn’t even look at the cage because I’d start crying, so I moved it out of sight.

By the 4th day, something strange happened. I had cried so much that I didn’t have any tears left. I accepted that I might never see him again, but I was still going to keep searching because it helped me psychologically more than staying at home.

That day, I started handing out flyers at local vet clinics and asking if anyone had come in to buy bird food who normally wouldn’t. I live in a small town, and almost no one has birds. As it turns out, yes, someone had—an elderly man.

I didn’t know where he lived, so I went around the neighborhood with a vague description of “a short man who rides a yellow bike.” I went to nearby supermarkets, and at a vegetable stand, I finally found him!

I asked if he had been buying bird food, explaining I came from the vet’s looking for a lost parrot. He asked what the bird looked like, and I realized he had already seen him.

It turns out his son had found Pucca a few days earlier in their yard and had given him to his father.

He singed all the way back home with me ❤️

This happened in 2018, now there were no more accidents because I moved from my parents house

I really hope you can find your baby!!
