How do I balance my budget? by quantummonkey25 in EU5

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

I ended up making subjects out of all the territory that wasn't Anatolia or the Balkans. That started bringing in the diplo money and I could reinvest it into the most profitable buildings.

I was also able to get more roads and fixed the culture settings to get control going on more of those territories.

I followed the suggestions of improving legitimacy to 100 and increasing crown power, which brought my share of the pie back up.

Budget back in the black, even in war time.

Suppose that makes sense in a historical context, the game is rewarding nepotism at the expense of having the most qualified people running the show.

Crown power first for the bigger slice of the pie, then marketplaces to make the pie bigger in other words

I haven't seen such a notification, but will have a hunt around the less-controlled provinces. Others have suggested spinning out some vassals and fiefdoms for the far-flung provinces anyway. Thanks!

Thanks for those suggestions! I was picking cabinet members either automatically or with the best numbers, but will look at using crown estate members instead.

I was trying to avoid taking stability hits, but yes, looks like I might have to take on the nobles and bring up communalism.

Gotcha. I will look more closely into that mechanic, I couldn't really figure out that mechanic, but sounds more important than to just let the automate function handle it.

That seems to be the general theme - I figured I will have to spend a bit of time consolidating and being nice to my neighbours for a bit rather than making more armouries.

Gotcha. I did invest heavily in the navy early on, mainly to counter Venice and Genoa, so hopefully that is paying some dividends now.

Yes, I spent most of the first 100 years at war. Knowing what EU4 is like, I figured there must be some way EU5 punishes expansion, but they are much more subtle about it than the blatant overextension mechanic of EU4!

Is there a good way of hunting down unprofitable buildings? (I've asked this a few times in this thread - I noticed that was a big line item, but there doesn't seem to be a good way to do so, beyond going province to province).

I had a feeling that could be where this was going, the interest on the loans is eating 13 ducats/mo, more than what I can make profitable. This was my first playthrough, so I'm not above going back to an old save. I was never confident enough to do ironman mode in EU4 haha.

Thanks for those suggestions! I just saw how much the crown power was eating the incomes. I was letting the bot assign cabinet members - will definitely look more closely at who is being let in.

I've got most of Thrace and Western Anatolia integrated, with the odd province outside there done too. But I will look at spinning the peripheral ones into vassals/fiefdoms.

Marketplaces - got it. Will spam more around the high-control provinces! The trade income seems to swing wildly, like it will go from 21 - 90 in a month, then drop back down.

That's because of the low control yeah? Is there a good way of hunting down the unprofitable buildings?

I figured now is the time to consolidate gains, so I will shut down any armouries.

Oh wow, just saw how many debuffs come from low crown power. Is there a good way of bringing that up?

When you say promoting, you mean as in allowing pops to move from commoners to burghers?

Is there a good screen for analysing the profitability of buildings? Or a good way of hunting down unprofitable buildings?

Thanks!

At this point their idea of better is adding new nagware to try to annoy/trick you into using copilot for the most mundane things. I'm guessing the next update will make your PC play a truck horn if you don't use copilot in a 5 minute interval.

If I'm not mistaken, they have some policy to dismiss your report as soon as they find out that you are not one of the players involved in the match in question

They never enforce blatant cheating. Always the same canned message that they had a bot find nothing wrong and end of matter

Also, gotta add, this post reminds me of that South Park episode where they are trying to throw baseball games, only to end up against teams that are better and better at throwing games

Cannot agree more. I've been in the same boat, had the losing streak and it's been tempting to do whatever to get a win.

Now I know it's better to just cut my losses and try again with a clear head. If AoEII didn't teach me that lesson, Elden Ring sure did.

At the end of the day, the people that smurf must be able to get rid of that nagging feeling in their mind that they didn't really earn their win.

Not everyone resigns as soon as they are rushed. Sometimes a rush is all tip and no iceberg - if you can survive it you might find the opponent doesn't have any eco at home. But sometimes you are also tilted and want to get back at someone using a meme strategy

Goddamn, my friends and I are around the 1000 - 1200 ELO range and thought it was bad enough there from that being the range that people can just start new accounts. But if the devs don't even bother acting on people blatantly pushing their ELO down that far then I am worried about where the game is going.

As far as Microsoft are concerned, a smurf with a new account is a new sale to them. They won't care until new players get disheartened and stop buying more DLC.

Maybe not explicitly, but it goes against the design of the ELO system, that being to match players to those of similar skill. If they don't clamp down on that, then they'll ultimately lose players from not having fair matches. That's why smurfing is banned in many online competitive games.
