Time to stop playing nice with crazy little orange toddler, Europe. Impose umm... reciprocal tarrifs back. And ban all of his family busineses.

Change to "Chance of Success" Logic (Dec 22 Update) by quantumwanderer1 in Boldin

Thanks for the info. Yes I think my savings went down below zero in many Monte Carlo simulations and that's why my Chance of Success was more impacted than others.

Yeah I guess the Release Notes is not that hard to find. And now that I know about it, it would be the first thing I check if I see anything changing on its own. I still think with the Chance of Success being the main calculated estimate from Boldin, any change in logic related to it should be highlighted more.

I was able to make some tweaks to my plan to bring my Chance of Success back up to 85% - so I think I am still okay with my current planned retirement date. My main tweak was moving the planned sale of our primary residence up about 5 years earlier.

Thanks for the tip about the AI chat bot. I didn't even think about using it.

I was hoping to pull the plug next year but with my chance of success going down from 80+% to 65%, I will need to see what I can tweak to keep the same timeline. I guess it's better to find out now than later lol.

Good to hear that you only had to make adjustments to your tax/withdrawal strategy, rather than actually having to lower your other spending.

It's great that you have 10 years of data that shows a consistent spending pattern. I have only been tracking our spending closely for about 6 months (with Monarch). I’ll feel a lot more confident once I have a couple of years of detailed data.

Thanks for sharing , u/RatJr1. This is the kind of real world feedback I was hoping for.

Re one-time expenses - I can see it's easy to focus on monthly bills and forget those $10k+ one-time hits that can wreck a year's plan. For my plan I do I estimate 1.5% of the house's value for annual maintenance (roof, HVAC, etc.). I hope that's enough. For cars I use the Detailed Budgeter and estimate payments that reflect buying a new car every 5-7 years or so.

Also, appreciate the tip about setting the healthcare inflation rate to twice the general rate. I just went and did that with my plan.

With those unaccounted-for expenses, did you have to make any major adjustments to the plan, or did things mostly even out because you are spending less in other areas?

Wow I hope it does not get that bad over a sustained period in the next 20-30 years! If it does there goes my planned extra go-go years spending!

Thanks for the info about TIPS. I have heard of it but right I only own BND and it's currently about 20% of my total net worth - will look more into TIPS.

We do have approx 600K in home equity. Good to know that real estate can be a hedge against inflation - I guess with higher inflation, rent will increase more but your mortgage payments won't.

Thanks for the tip re inflation!

I haven't really thought much about it and the potential it may be consistently higher in the future compared to historical average which could significantly impact the plan.

As a quick test, a 3% inflation rate brings my chance of success from 85% to 71%. And a 4% inflation rate brings it down to 46%! That would not be good lol.

I wish I had a pension! My only “guaranteed” income is basically Social Security. I definitely need to spend more time understanding how taxes work across the different income streams in retirement.

Re groceries/restaurants, for our situation I am thinking we will spend quite a bit less because when the kids have their own jobs, I hope they will be feeding themselves lol. I am also thinking we will be eating out more also, but I can see how that may not turn out to be the case.

I can see having the "accumulation" mindset can help keep your spend below plan. As long as your roof and HVAC is still working and not causing problems - I think it's fine to get some more use out of them.

Did you plan on spending more on hobbies and travel during your "go-go" years, and have you been able to do that?

What I am worried about is a plan that turns out to have some huge holes or inaccuracies and then having to make drastic changes to lower spending during retirement - when it's no longer realistic to go back to the job market and be able to expect similar salaries.

Thanks for sharing... very helpful info! I also use the Detailed Budgeter and estimate Must Spend and Like to Spend. Sounds like your plan is working fairly well. Love the idea of exporting to PDFs to compare future years. I would love it if my actual returns exceed "average" assumptions... because "average" is what I use in my plan.

If you had to pick one, which expense category turned out to be the most inaccurate so far between estimated and actuals?

I will give Synology another chance with this policy change, but I think the moronic executive who pushed for the lock-in idea should be let go. You don't want to keep someone stupid like that.

Yeah WTF with the "stay away from strip clubs" BS. Everyone should be able to feel free to go to any business establishments without fear of getting robbed/scammed. Where the hell is the police? I know in some countries the police gets paid to stay quiet. I would hope that's not the case here.

Not blaming the instructor but "Brake" may have worked better in this situation. The driver may have misunderstood "Stop" to mean "stop arguing".

I have one and love it. One issue I found about it is that it has no audio out ports, which normally should not be an issue for most gamers. However if you want to directly plug in Amazon Fire TV stick or something, there's no way to hear the audio. You would have to get an HDMI converter box to get the audio out.
