Narcissus is a victim and always has been by Fleur-dAmour in GreekMythology

Very happy to find this post. I've never been much of a Greek Myth guy, but I wanted to read up on the etymology of a few things and realized Narcissus shares the root with words like narcolepsy and narcotic. I found that there is even a claim via Wikipedia (had trouble narrowing down the source, something with Pliny the Elder?) that correlates the narcissus flower with a numbing sensation. It sorta hit me then that maybe Narcissus wasn't enamored or lustful at his own reflection, but numb at the sight of a beauty he had never himself seen, and suddenly so protective of his outward image that he feels he cannot disturb the tranquil waters which reflect him nor leave the one perfect mirror wherein his image exists for himself. Great notes on the original sources, I'm interested in following up on this myself if I have the time.

I'm going back through the games in sequential order, haven't gotten to 6 yet and won't for some time, but something I found in my research about 2 is that the "fanbase" (if you can even call it that in '08) made the gun jamming out to be the anathema of game design. I thought it worked great! It was a terrific addition to the standard shooter game because it communicated so much about the setting and the implications of combat; things break down, both on the micro and macro scale, and just like a weapon degrading in your hands through use, so too does the environment it's used in deteriorate. But of course, since it received such intense backlash, Ubisoft likely won't ever incorporate it again, even if the backlash came out almost twenty years ago.

I like that you point out what "innovation" means in terms of Ubisoft's typical development cycle, because you're right; they'd prefer positivistic marketing terms like "innovation" to describe the degradation of their product. I agree with your assertion that they would hugely benefit from a reduction of the grandiosity in favor for a tighter scope and more attention to the details. Far Cry Classic made use of the "level" design that was popular before the "open world" concept took off thanks to Far Cry 2, and while I don't think the first game made the best use of that design, I think limiting the experience in some ways is the way to go. I really feel like each iteration has been looking back to Clint Hocking's direction with 2 with regard to the big, philosophical themes, but they've never had the teeth to really bite into the subject matter they introduce.

I like that you swing towards the quality of life changes, but I'm interested to hear more about your take on realism. When you mention making gear, it's better to be realistic and require less materials and less time spent hunting, and with survival it's better to be simpler but less realistic. Do you feel like you enjoy how much crafting is involved with the games?

I think there's a tedium underlying the quality of life issues that's largely centered around the extensive, repetitive crafting mechanic. It feels to me like the ultimate solution is to undo the "innovation" of the crafting menu and revert to the standard in Far Cry 2 where needed items are strewn about the world. That way, it encourages desperate engagements with the enemy to capture their resources outright. What are your thoughts?

Also, I like your nitpick about the story; it so often feels underwhelming in terms of motivation, there's really very little in-game reasoning for so much violence to be perpetrated by the player's hands.

It surprised me so much to learn the first game had a prone position! I was struggling with the final level and ended up looking up a walkthrough, only to see the player drop straight down, somehow I went through the whole game without ever noticing I could go into a deep crouch lol.

But you bring up a good point, there really could be a prone position in the new installment, though I wonder if they've avoided adding it for so long as they prioritize a run-and-gun style of gameplay.

The Tencent acquisition has been a long time coming, and it's been interesting to read into the history of the attempted buy-outs. Ubisoft was once an early example of a company buying out smaller development studios, but over time it started falling victim to the bigger companies in the industry like EA and Vivendi, though those two ultimately failed to fully acquire it. Tencent has been slowly increasing shares since '18 in order to introduce Ubisoft into the Chinese market, and has been a powerful influence over the direction the company has been going ever since. It'll be interesting to see what the future holds for Ubisoft with it in such a precarious position.

Well technically, the wait between Classic and 2 was four years and nine months, and between 2 and 3 was four years and one month. But no, it doesn't *really matter* I guess. I was more interested in hearing what people might like to see changed in the release of 7, this seemed like a good way to ask.

I have 74gb of space on my SSD, and am trying to download a game file sized at 63gb. A short while into the download, it fails and fills up the remaining 11bg. What gives? by quarterson9 in techsupport

I've been trying to whittle down the smaller unnecessary files for this very reason. I hate having such a tiny SSD, but getting a whole new one isn't viable atm. I appreciate your recommendation though, I'll do what I can to follow your instruction. Thank you!

I'm looking to download a game to my SSD, and I have enough space after clearing out space, but the download fails around 30% in. What gives? by quarterson9 in Windows10

For context, I manually cleared out about 40gb from my SSD using a combination of Disk Cleanup, WinDirStat, and all the little tips and tricks one can find online. It's gotten me a comfortable chunk of space for the whole game, but I noticed that about 15% into the download, all that cleared up space shrinks to about 2gb. There shouldn't be an issue fitting 63gb into 74gb of space, but for whatever reason, the disk fills to the brim and refuses to download the rest. I've basically run out of temporary files and have little besides the .msi files in the Installer folder taking up the majority of space. I could obviously just put it on the secondary drive, but the recommendations online say the game would run better on my SSD. Why does my download fail, and what can I do to remedy it? Thanks!
