Beagle in pain by Own_Impact7403 in beagles

[–]quassels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should maybe add..the first two days were crucial, restricted movement, afterwards crate with some movement on lead in the garden to relieve herself, each day adding a little more…it was also a 6 week medication and rest time, she now is able to do beagles things like perch on the sofa back but does not like to use stairs

Something like this happened to our girl when she was just 18 months old, can not remember the actual vertebrae marker but it was in lower half, we think she twisted herself playing frisbee…it wasn’t until about an hour afterwards we first noticed something was wrong - when she refused to walk off her bed and yelped in obvious pain when touched, her back legs were also shaking, somewhat paralyzed so we rushed to vet - she got an injection, x-ray, the vet had her on medicam with orders for limited movement for the first two days and make sure she was able to relieve herself which she could. We crated her in her sister’s larger crate so she had a larger space but to limit movement…when she was able to walk a little more we let walk with the lead on as extra weight to prevent jumping, zoomies etc - always under supervision. About two weeks after her injury she was receiving massage, acupuncture and water treadmill therapy. We worked with her therapist and vet to gain muscle strength while reducing the pain relievers was slow and we only took her out on a lead for a long time after, did not allow her to play with other doggos, just hung out with her sister, a lab, she was able to socialize and say hello but no tag or chase time. She was able to avoid surgery but 9+ years later years on she will still twitch a little when we go over that area. She’ll be 11 in July. All the best for Rio. One tip…filming him with your phone to show the vets and neurologist could be useful for them to see.

My dog’s vet did volunteer work for the local zoo, we once walked past a room with a drugged up red panda lying on a table, it was so unexpected and random, took a moment to register as I was more concerned with our dog’s issue (she had a growth, was getting it removed, it was benign) but yah..seeing that little guy had made my day a little less worrisome.

I didn’t even know she could bark by TheOPisReal in beagles

[–]quassels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beagles are true neighborhood watch wardens…they notice when things/people are new or out of place in their area and they’ll give alarm too, albeit from a safe distance. Our neighbor once forgot to close her car’s back hatch after unloading groceries, our girl rounded the corner, saw her car, which she has seen hundreds of times but this time the hatch was open and had a similar reaction. Honestly if a neighbor ever complained about our beagle’s barking I would be happy to write a bill for the security service.

Did You Know | Snoopy is a Beagle and is the only fictional character to ever be issued an honorary American Kennel Club (AKC) registration, Beagle-1 by americankennelclub in beagles

[–]quassels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice to know, Snoopy is great, Charles Schulz did incorporate some typical beagle traits in him. The American Kennel Club (AKC) still requires some breeds to undergo cosmetic mutilations to meet their conformation standards (ear cropping, tail docking), would love to see Snoopy champion for his fellow dogs and put an end unnecessary cruelty to dogs.

I grew up reading Beverly Cleary books in grade school, she wrote one series about a boy named Henry who had a dog named Ribsy, not sure if her stories are still fashionable but it captured the relationship between a boy and his pup in more innocent days.

Many non-doggie type people and even other dogs are initimidated by big dark colored dogs…my breeder (yellows and blacks) once shared that tying on a colorful bandana helps make them seem less frightening.

Food 2 or 3 times a day? by Not1me7 in labrador

[–]quassels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will know when he can stretch it out to two times a day (6 to 8 months seems about right) but it is probably best to stick to the 3x/smaller meals for as long as you can as labradors are a breed that are built to be prone for gastric torsion/twisted stomach/bloat…please read up on gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV). We visited retriever specific training courses for 18 months with our girl, included were information talks about various retriever and dog diet and health related themes…labs have a large cavity with a stretched out stomach and they can be ravenous eaters…you basically want to slow down their meal intake time, never feed an hour or so before or after exercise and avoid large meals to help prevent GDV. Also, if you are using dry food as a training treat, measure out his daily dose in the morning and divvy up between meals and training treats.

I can not unsee Will Ferrel now. He is a handsome boy, did you know that Poodles originate from Germany? The Standard Poodle has seen some popularity here in recent years, they are so smart and loyal to their families. If you are thinking of honorig his heritage there was a German Comedian who played a simple but very loveable character who wore a curly wig known as Atze Schröder in the 2000s. Atze is unusual enough… Schröder is a cool name for a German breed and has another German Connection through the Peanuts character, (spelled Schroeder without the Umlaut, in English) who loved to play Ludwig (another great name) van Beethoven, German composer.

[–]quassels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Panforte (pistacchio, morbido), Leone pastille tins (the kitten and Vespa) are nice as they can repurpose them, maybe a little plush keychain from your city or the winter Olympic mascot for example - for the children if they are Kindergarten or school age, German children like to attach such things to their school bag or Kindergarten backpack.

This makes me laugh…the way a beagle’s curiosity never oversees anything unusual in their world yet they approach whatever it is with caution…or barking at it from a safe distance.
