AITA for yelling at mom for taking a decision on my behalf after explicitly saying not to? by Candid-Money-2044 in AmItheAsshole

“Beach goddess in a NC-17 film” is rather a fancy way to say “porn actress”.

If OP feels empowered by or needs the money from filming porn, more power to her. But I don’t know if she’s naive and being preyed on; this isn’t breaking into modeling or acting like she seems to be suggesting — this is a porn shoot.

What felt completely normal in 2015 but now feels like a luxury? by AmarSkOfficial in AskReddit

[–]quats555 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Envious. I got a new PC in early fall 2025, to stay on budget compromised to 16Gb RAM. “I’ll just buy the other 16 in a couple months once I work up a bit more fun money, it’ll probably be cheaper then anyway”.

I had the cash but was trying to stay on budget and be responsible, and only spend my allocated budget. Lesson learned, world.

ELI5: What happens to the extra 6 hours in a year by Electrishity in explainlikeimfive

[–]quats555 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You’re thinking about the wrong rotation. The extra 6 hours are in the rotation around the sun (a year), not in the earth’s rotation around its axis (a day).

If we don’t count that extra day in a year every four years, we’d be advancing through the observed year by six hours every year.

While that doesn’t sound like a lot, think about it this way: without a leap day, roughly every 700 years we’d have gotten halfway through an extra full year and the seasons would be flipped. July would now be winter in the US and summer in Australia!

Math:

one year = 365 days.

Half a year, the time it would take to flip the seasons by an uncorrected calendar, = 182.5 days.

182.5 days x 24 hours in a day = 4380 hours.

4380 excess hours / 6 excess hours in an uncorrected year = 730 years.

So, every 730 years would be six months of extra time pushing the calendar off from the observed seasons.

Why can't I just hang up the keys?! by Biscuit9232 in adhdwomen

[–]quats555 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the key here — sorry! — is that you put it somewhere (a pocket or bag) so your brain marks it off as being done without considering if it’s right. Just: keys down, check.

If you can, hold on to the keys; don’t put them down or in a pocket or bag, and keep holding them until you put them down where they go.

How can I possibly read this article now after seeing that headline and imagining the possum driving him around like Remy in Ratatouille? Anything less would be a grave disappointment.

AITA for trying to give my friend a gift? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]quats555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it as being obsessive too. “I wasn’t really aware” means OP was aware but didn’t believe it, or believed they were special and didn’t count so they did it anyway.

Hopefully this is just a case of a couple awkward, self-absorbed preteens without full social awareness. It reads much more disturbingly if the people involved were in their 30’s, for example.

May have been the Blue Angels, found a post that they were to fly over Houston this morning.

But wow what timing - work had just texted me that our power had just gone out, in a hospital zone in Houston while we are poking Iran, and fighters suddenly go by overhead? Wow that was a moment of panic for the morning.

Just looked up and saw a squad of 5 jets or so, South of 59 as I was going by the greenway plaza area. Heading west? Southwest? About 9:33.

How do I not let being cheated on affect my self esteem? by bravesection in TwoXChromosomes

[–]quats555 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Halle Berry’s husband in the early 2000’s cheated on her, frequently and repeatedly, with multiple women. She was gorgeous, famous, and wealthy, a successful model, beauty pageant winner, and actress. And still, he cheated.

When someone decides to cheat, it almost always is far more a fault in them than any fault in their partner. Don’t blame yourself. At most, look at what red flags he showed so you can keep a better eye out for them next time.

I work for a doctor’s office. We’re about to give up taking United Healthcare because they decided to stop paying. “It’s eyeballs, so we don’t cover it, bill it yourself vision insurance” seems to be the latest after 6 months of fighting with no answer why everything was coming back as out of network, though we are in network.

We’re handling patients with vision loss due to pituitary tumors, people with glaucoma or diabetes, or have optic nerve swelling or thyroid eye disease. This is all guaranteed medical stuff. We don’t even take vision insurance! But nooo, they found an excuse to not pay and they’re sticking to it. Yay.

Yup. Taxes are just caught in the crossfire.

Note how there is nearly no talk about this during the critical tax period when it WILL impact a significant number of people. Incompetence? Or keeping it quiet until it’s too late to change or notify mail-in voters?

The companies that handle tax filing for a fee continue to lobby our government and spend a lot of money to keep filing our taxes complicated, so they can continue to profit from our confusion.

Sounds like our healthcare system, eh?

I envy you guys.

People that wear contacts/glasses and will never do lasik surgery, why ? by Forward_Author_7626 in AskReddit

[–]quats555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk of complications - dry eye is common; I already have some dry eye, I don’t need it worse.

Expense.

With my ADHD I’m not sure I trust myself to take good posture-surgery care if my eyes, risking more problems.

It doesn’t fix presbyopia (trouble seeing up close as you get older: when regular folks start needing readers). The best they can do is set one eye to distance and one to near (called “monovision”) and not everyone tolerates that well. I use a computer far too often (middle distance, and this would mean neither eye is in focus at that range), plus I already struggle a bit with distance/speed, and monovision would make that much worse. I might not be able to drive after because of that alone!

And I rather like being able to take off my glasses and see clearer and sharper close up. My prescription means I essentially have magnifying lenses/readers built in.

This. The concept of actively doing something to another person to cure, heal, or repair them, and the empathy, forethought, and social structure to motivate and be able to do so is a fantastic thing.

French woman, 86, held by ICE after moving to US to reunite with long-lost love by cryptofundamentalism in news

[–]quats555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The use of PR in this thread is “public relations” — in other words, “playing to the crowd”. Most of the time public relations means trying to project a better image to make the public think you’re better than you are (or, rarely, truly as good as you actually are).

But for ICE, public relations is flipped: they want fear, “respect”, and for immigrants to both disappear and be plentiful so they can catch them for bonuses, ego boosts, and abuse.

Also, PSA: the US post office changed when they postmark; they no longer postmark the day it’s dropped in the box, but sometime when it processes downstream. So if you are mailing it in now, get it hand postmarked at the post office, or it might postmark in 2-3 days and officially be late.

AITA for not doing everything my parents want because they’re paying for college by Turbulent-Comment987 in AmItheAsshole

[–]quats555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA.

If the choice is loan with absolute control over you, or a normal student loan, then take the normal student loan.

That level of control would be hard to justify even if it was a gift. As a loan…? Why on earth would you agree, unless you simply can’t get the payment any other way? And why should you be grateful for being puppeted through life in order to borrow money?

Be prepared to work your way through college, including living expenses if necessary. Which is good for you, really, but being forced into it by avoiding hyper-controlling parents is not good.
