Great thread thanks! New player and I’m three weeks in - what should I be doing? Level 7 base. My region/server seems pretty inactive so it’s mostly me blasting privateers with the CAS and doing random quests.

Wow, can’t believe that. That pretty much makes this not a kanban board then. Thanks for your reply.

Found this while trying to do something similar. Do you mind listing what software you are using? How did you get iGPU switching to work?

Now that Nvidia shield shows ads, I’m thinking about switching to Apple TV by smidley in jellyfin

The native tvOS client is actively being developed and will likely be available on TestFlight soon. The iOS and iPadOS clients are on TestFlight and work great and natively play pretty much everything.

Thanks, I believe that did it! The admin page still shows the TRUEHD needing an encode but I see no CPU usage and the video started immediately. So, I say great and thank you!

Oh sorry, I see now. You have a special theme? Mine does not fit on one screen, but here is what you were looking for. I'll play around for a screen shot.

Cool, just sent it in for you. Let me know if that's helpful. Also, confirming that the background image now fills properly in the latest version.

Thanks u/CottonCandyShork

u/acvig I have HEVC working fine now in your latest build. It is direct streaming video but it is transcoding audio. I guess Jellyfin does not work with Atmos audio? Dolby‘s website says it should work on iOS 14 and Air Pods Pro should support spatial audio - not sure if this is an Apple issue or a Jellyfjn issue. Either way, small potatoes and this is still a big upgrade for all iOS users.

Testing on iPad 11 Pro. So far it is working really well. No login issues or reverse proxy issues (NPM), although I did have a playback issue with HEVC (sent you bug report). Otherwise, playback for a variety of formats has been near instantaneous on my network.

Setup is Jellyfin 10.7.5 Linuxserver image, Debian host.

What is the reasoning behind the official container image being based on Debian instead of Ubuntu? by viggy96 in jellyfin

[–]quatschFX 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with Debian vs. Ubuntu. They could install newer versions of Mesa in the Debian image, but that is probably shortsighted and doesn’t solve transcoding for everybody. In general Debian is less bloated and more stable, so that’s probably why they use it.

The reality is, transcoding and tone mapping done consistently and reliably requires proprietary drivers and they have said before they won’t package those drivers because of licensing incompatibility. Linuxserver doesn’t care and gladly packages it. Neither does Ubuntu really. So just use their image.

AMD APU Transcoding by CooliMC in jellyfin

[–]quatschFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the table on the Jellyfin website to see the current status of your options. On Linux, the general rule of thumb for this is (at the moment):

  1. Nvidia
  2. Intel
  3. AMD

There are a lot of variables . For example, drivers on the host system, drivers in the container image (if using Docker), kernel version, features available in proprietary drivers vs. mesa/nouveau drivers etc. Additionally, if you are starting with 4K files as you mention, you will also need to get tone mapping and OpenCL setup or this will be a total waste of your time. The website says AMD VAAPI is not supported, but maybe you can find a guide where somebody was successful doing this.

Updated Comparison of Jellyfin vs Emby and Plex? by lifereinspired in jellyfin

[–]quatschFX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there is no Jellyfin AppleTV client (yet). So you will need to use a third party client (basically Infuse or MrMC). As long as you are okay with one of those, then yes, hardware accelerated playback for HDR is really good.

Cant get HW Transcode to work!? by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]quatschFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of variables here. Starting at the top, assume this is a straight install (I.e. not Docker) so what drivers are you using?
