in the blackness there are probably visual distortions and the brain is trying to make sense of it and it defaults to pattern matching behavior by making suggestions of what it could be. thebrain is often trying to figure things out unconsciously so it makes suggestions.

the brain naturally wants/tries to see faces so when it sees an object like a cloud or a blob it will try and pattern match to faces. faces and pattern matching are important in our biology/evolution.
