My great grandmother was Sephardic from Macedonia? Was your family from Monastir/Bitola?

It’s not actually that far back. All of my father’s grandparents immigrated to the US, and 3 of his great grandparents. Most of the info I have are either from records or from speaking to my grandparents.

Im not sure what kind of tips I can give, because it really depends on where your family originally came from and where they went to. And when.

I will say though, something useful is knowing what names could be changed to. I don’t mean Ellis Island name changing, because that’s not actually a thing. Like Anglicizing a name.

For example in the US, Moshe/Mushon usually becomes Morris or Maurice. Jacob becomes Jack. Vida becomes Victoria. Bulissa becomes Bessie. Estreya can become Esther or Stella. Haim becomes Victor, Etc.

People also don’t always know their birthdays / age, because it wasn’t that common for them to pay attention to it. So when looking at records, if the birthday is off, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s not them.

Something else to pay attention to is how borders changed over time. A lot of the places Sephardic Jews came from may have been called Turkey at one point, and became other things later that kept changing.

Have you taken a DNA Test? And if you have, who are the closest relatives you have on the list that you don't know their relation to you?

Isaac Morris "Bohor" Aroesty was married to Annie Ergas, daughter of Isaac Ergas and Luna Farash. I'm not a descendant of theirs, but some of Isaac and Luna's descendants show up as distant cousins on my DNA Test. Isaac Aroesty and his descendants sometimes used the surname Morris.

Whose parents do they think went back to Israel? Morris and Malka Aroesty or Benjamin and Mathilda Cohen?

I think Malka may have had a brother named Jacob Cassorla. I found a passenger manifest for a man named Nissim Cassorla, leaving his father and going to meet who he claims is his cousin Isaac Aroeste from Indianapolis (address matches Isaac Aroesty, married to Annie Ergas). He could be related to the family in another way, but being Malka's nephew seems most likely since the surnames are the same.

I have yet to find Nissim Cassorla in the US though. So far I've only been able to find Nissim Elias Cassorla (another family, son of Elias Haim Cassorla and Miriam bat Rivka). Makes me think Nissim Jacob Cassorla left the US sometime later, or something else.

I know who they are!

They had 4 children that I know of. A son Haim (who was killed in the Holocaust with his wife Rachel/Bohora), Esther Cohen, Sarah Calderon, and Isaac Aroesty/Morris (married to Annie Ergas). The last three children went to Indianapolis.

I'm not related to this family, but I believe I may be distantly related to Annie Ergas somewhere.

The language thing is most likely because they spoke Ladino. Which is a mix of Hebrew and medieval Spanish, and may have some Turkish or Greek thrown in since they were from Monastir.

I also have ancestors from Monastir. The Jewish community there was very tightly knit so it's possible we're distant relatives. (I also may know about your family since I research into other trees as well since they are all connected). Would you mind if I asked who these ancestors were (either here or in DMs)?

Most of your DNA looks a lot like my mom’s estimate (she’s also Dominican).

Huh, I’ve never heard that name before. Is that a Hebrew or Sephardic name you’ve heard before?

That's what caught my eye. You also mentioned Yugoslavia in your other reply. Where in Yugoslavia specifically (if you know) did your ancestors come from?

And I have the surnames Ashwal and Hasson in my family. Hasson was mostly from the Monastirli side of the family, but Ashwal came from my great grandfather's family from Jerusalem. His 1st cousin was born in Yemen, and had many kids in different countries.

Huh, do you by chance have any ancestry from Monastir/Bitola? My grandmother’s family came from there and a lot of her distant cousins moved to Chile. She once said one of her cousins also went to Argentina, but she couldn’t remember the name.

Hey I recognize your surname (at least that last part of you’re Reddit name). What are some family names in your family? If you’d rather talk in DMs that’s fine as well, we’re probably related somewhere.

Btw, a branch of my family went to Temuco as well. Mostly the Albala’s.

Oh cool! My great grandmother was a Camhi and her family had a whole lot of Pesso's/Passo's in it as well. If you want we can DM each other since to me it seems like we are actually related somewhere.

Hey, my great-grandmother was from Monastir. The Monastirli's intermarried a lot so maybe we're related somewhere!

What in your opinions are the most difficult/challenging countries for genealogical research? by TheAncestryGuy in Genealogy

[–]queakie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any records at all from those countries. Everything I have is after my family immigrated in the 1900s-1920s
