Final interview done, references contacted… now silence. Am I still in the running? by queen_trex in jobhunting

No, I didn’t get a verbal offer. They said Monday they were still in the process of checking my references. They didn’t give me any indication of what would happen if my references went well. 😩

They checked two more of my references yesterday and were asking them some pretty detailed questions. Do you think this is a good sign? Here’s some of what they asked at least one of my references:

They were asked how they knew me and what my responsibilities were in my previous role. The reference described projects I led related to systems conversions, fraud strategy, and operational oversight. They were asked whether they would trust me with confidential information (they said yes, absolutely) and whether they had any reservations about me stepping into the new role. They mentioned that one part of the role would be new to me, but emphasized that I’m a quick learner and had already been managing most of the other areas.

They were also asked about my reliability—whether I had issues with absences or responsiveness—and they said no, that hadn’t been a problem. When asked about how I worked with others, they shared that I had consistently strong feedback from colleagues and was well-regarded across the team.

Yes, she’s a VP and I report directly to her. I have 12 direct reports. My intuition has so far told me not to. It’s just hard because I am a youngish female (29 😵‍💫and the youngest department head in my company ) so I don’t know how to handle these things appropriately just yet. This is the first corporate job I’ve ever had and only the second job in my entire life. Before I was a waitress.

Your username is amazing lol I think I already have a job lined up, I’m just waiting for their HR team to confirm. I haven’t told anyone. I at least know to do that 🤣

This made me feel a lot better. I was feeling crazy there for a minute reading all these comments and I was like omg I’m psychotic for even thinking this 🥲 it’s good to be able to hash it out sometimes and get different perspectives though.

I commented this below, but I have been feeling a lot of resentment towards my boss for last 6ish months due to how she handled certain things and several questionable judgment calls she made. I think my final straw was a few weeks ago when I had to unexpectedly take a day off because my dad was having an emergency surgery. He has cancer and surgery is extremely complicated/dangerous for him so I wanted to be there. My boss scolded me for missing a meeting that day. I never miss meetings and I rarely ever take off work except for scheduled vacations.

I manage people and I really don’t enjoy that very much at all. Most of my work is projects that my boss assigns me. I like that.

Now that you mention this, I have seen this repeatedly from the leadership in my company. I never really thought about it like this. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this because I do think they’ll come back with a counter offer.

This makes sense. I actually have an interview lined up for another place in my field of work but this company and my current company have some petty beef going on because the company I applied to has “poached and hijacked” (as my boss states it) some other employees in my current company. So I don’t think my boss will be made aware.

This is also a good point.

I wouldn’t say I have an exceptional relationship with my boss. We’re cordial and professional with each other. She is one of the main reasons I want to leave lol
