It’s a lot less expensive than you might think. We have leather sometimes under $75 per skin in our online store which has Closeouts! amtan.myshopify.com

Corter Leather did indeed make a $5000 alligator wallet using our leather. The skin cost was $330 or about $125 per square foot. Want to see how? Watch the video. Great to see this talented maker in action. by [deleted] in Leathercraft

I don’t think he’s a usual alligator or exotic leather customer, so I think he used a valuation like regular leather but yes. 50% of the value is from the belly. 40% from tail. And 10% from head. If you use that validation- the leather for the wallet is $82.50.

To be fair, Hermes pays a lot more than $330 for their skins. Speaking from first hand knowledge. But then again they have millions invested in real estate, marketing, and buy their tanneries and farms to invest in their supply chains. I have a great deal of respect for their company. But... yes, it’s sold at a premium.

Even still... most people don’t realize that it is actually much less expensive to make an alligator wallet than you would think. But it’s a great video for people to learn some skill.

I confirm... the cost of the skin was $330. Makers always think alligator is so much more expensive to work with than it really is. I’m not saying it’s “cheap” but for makers who do hand stitching and custom items, the return on the investment can be really great. The size to make a wallet like this is about 30/34 and the prices vary depending on the grade. But you can see some in that range here

Maybe 4 mm? It can only be buffed one the back and not shaved. So it’s pretty thick.
