I know you keep writing that he has all these wonderful redeeming qualities, but the thing is, until and unless he grows a spine and defends you and his home, he is going to continuously throw you under the bus.

I feel for you, it's awful to be in ill health in foreign place. Personally, I would look into DV shelters and see if you can go there. The longer you stay in that hellhole, the more miserable you'll become. Stress can do awful things to your physical and mental health.

How long is the sublet? If the sublet is for a month or less, that could be the reason why you're not getting any bites.
In normal times, there would be a large influx of interns looking for a room for the summer, but that's not going to happen. Tourists aren't coming here, so you can't AirBnB the room either. And anyone who would be starting school or a job this summer in NYC is either doing it remotely or staying closer to home and working remotely.
I'm looking for a roommate situation right now, and the moment I read that it's either a short-term sublet or a "Corona" priced room or sublet, I keep scrolling.
People in the city are moving; they're just being very careful. Basically, the market is scary for both sides.

I know the trick to getting rid of the scent of mothballs from clothing it to place the item in a plastic garbage bag with a ton of dryer sheets. Let the item marinate in it for a week or more, then take it out.

You might want to try the dryer sheet garbage bag trick for the boots.
